I lasted all of one week on Atkins, and I felt downright blah and icky.:( I lost a tentative five pounds (temperamental scale), but it just wasn't worth how I was feeling.

I decided to switch to eating healthier and watching portions. I was very proud of myself when I went to the market yesterday. No junk food, lots of fruit, veggies, etc. :D

DH is sticking with Atkins. I didn't want us on two different plans, but that's how it's going to be.

I'm not giving up, I'm just taking a different approach.

Regina, that's the spirit! That's what I like about this board, we all support whatever someone's personal choice is. I love keeping track of what I eat on Fitday. I think that it really helps to keep me focused. No cost, and lots of info to track and graph.

Welcome to the "no real plan just eating healthy" group!

Regina! How great that you aren't giving up. Atkins isn't for everyone. It works great for Gary but not for you. No big deal, really, you have to find a program that fits your needs, not Gary's needs.

Good for you. If you ever decide to try Atkins again, you might want to send Zurgswife a pm and ask her how she approached induction.

She was very wise and didn't start with less the 20 grams she started with 50 or 60? I can't remember. At any rate, she worked her way down to induction and it save her a lot of discomfort, it worked for her.

Hey Reg!!!!

I love Arkins...mainly because there isn't a diet in the world I have ever done that I could do. This is not the one for you, and that is ok :) You got a great attitude...you go with what works for you, because everyone is different. What is important is working towards a new healthy YOU!!!! Hugs sweetie :)

HEY DVCREG!!!! So nice to see you on the WISH board!!!!

I tried Atkins too and while I did like the way the protein literally took away my appetite, I had a few problems with it too. It's great for those that can stay on it long term, but unfortunately I wasn't one of them.:(

Now I do Weight Watchers and try to get most of my points from protein, but if I do eat carbs, it's okay as long as I stay within my points. Good for you with all the fruits and veggies!

Don't worry, just search for the eating plan that's right for you. No ONE plan is right for everyone.

The blah and icky you were feeling is normal for some people during the first week or so of Atkins. It's caffiene and/or carb withdrawal that causes that. It always gets better from there on out but it's certainly your decision to do whatever works for you the best. :)

I decided to switch to eating healthier and watching portions.
That's the only part I don't get of your post. What food were you eating on Atkins? I have found that the ones that think it's not healthy aren't doing it properly. Did you buy the book? Read the website? I honestly would like to know how to eat healthier than meat, fish, poultry, veggies and cheese. My body doesn't NEED bread, pasta, white flour and sugar. To me those items aren't healthy (and I'm eating fruits now too- although that's not for induction I know). So what do you mean eating "healthier"? Did you mean healthier than before you were even doing Atkins? If so, I'm sorry I misunderstood. :)

Hope you have great results with the way you are eating now. :)

Not every diet is cut out for every person, sorry it didn't work out for you. I am just glad to read that you are still commited to a healthier lifestyle, congratulations to you.

Thanks for the support.

Bibbidy, what I meant by eating healthier wasn't meant as a slam on Atkins. This was my second try with this diet, and I've had the books for awhile. It works wonderfullly for DH, but it's just not for me. The last time that I gave up on it, I gave up on losing weight altogether.

This time, I stocked the fridge with veggies and fruit, as well as meat/cheese for DH (and I wouldn't encourage DH to be on a diet that's unhealthy).

Most of the time, the only time that I ate fruit was when I was on a cruise and it was a drink garnish. ;)

Eating healthy for me means no more chips, ice cream, cake, or candy (especially my big weakness, licorice), and making salad/veggies the larger portion of my meals instead of the starches.

It's as simple as that.:D

I couldn't do Atkins either. And when I w s on ww I drove myself crazy counting points and found that I thought about eating/dieting waaaaaay too much! I am like you and trying to eat more healthy. I am also trying to exercise more. I go to curves and i walk. Right now I feel pretty good. I will stay away from the scale since I don't believe that gives a true measurement of success. How I feel is a much better judge.

Let's hear it for healthy living...no matter what program we use! :)

One week is 7 days more than I could do Atkins, I'm afraid!

I admire you for being able to stick to it that long and there is nothing at all wrong with deciding that it's not right for you.
I have always been able to do my own diet plan in the past, but this time it just wasn't working for me, so I joined WW. I've been really pleased with the results. I guess I just need to be accountable to someone else!

Good luck and we're glad to have you on the WISH board!

Regina you have a wonderful attitude and I admire you for not giving up!! What a great outlook you have on your eating plans!! I agree, Atkins isn't for everyone and my first week, I didn't think I would be able to stay with it (only because I never believe I can do anything! LOL), but I did and now I just love eating this way! I am glad that you are going to try something different and I am sure you will find a plan that is best for you!!

Hugs, Regina! :)

I was very proud of myself when I went to the market yesterday

Congratulations. Isn't it a wonderful feeling to go through the checkout line with a cart full of healthy food? I also do the "eat healthy, eat small" plan and it works great. I also do "perimeter shopping", which is just hitting the outside aisles at the grocery store, you know, the fruits and veggies and dairy products (no meat for me). About 90% of my groceries come from this area.
Please keep us posted with your progress.

Good luck... stick with what makes you feel good!!!

Good luck, Regina! Check out the Cooking Light website for some yummy recipes. Sounds like you have a great plan! Since we started WW, we have increased the amount of veggies we eat per day from almost none to quite a variety. I never knew I loved fresh steamed spinach or broccoli so much!! Try grilling zucchini and yellow squash (spray with a bit of Pam first). YUMMY! Great with a little marinara sauce on top.

See you around! :)
