FUDGE!!!!! Our 2 yr old RCA 46" TV is KAPUT!!! Talk about a budget buster.....NO we didnt get the extended warrenty, NO we dont have the receipt, YES we did everything wrong when it comes to the above stuff. But its 2 yrs old and the warrenty wouldnt have covered much anyways......Now we have to spend $$$$ for a new TV that is completely NOT in our budget right now......I'm fine with the 25" big box tv we have, but ya'll know how men can be....UGH....just wanted to vent a bit....thanks for listening!!!

that's scary - did it just die or did something happen to cause it to die??
When we bought our 50 panasonic plasma we debated the warrany long and hard. Lots of money the deal breaker ended up being it covered burn in on the screen and lightening so we ended up getting it. Pray we never need it -we've had the tv a year. Good luck- it really does suck.

Call RCA customer service and see if there is any troubleshooting you can do. Are you sure it's the TV and not the cable box? A lot of times, our tv will have a blank screen except for the info bar on the bottom and it just means we have to reboot the cable box.

If that doesn't work, keep in mind the holidays are coming and the prices on the flat HD LCD TVs are getting lower and lower. I'm sure you'll be able to find an inexpensive one (even if you have to get a smaller one until you can save the $$ for the bigger one)

I disagree that you did anything wrong. Extended warranties are 99% of the time a ripoff and only make money for the store that sells them, and often don't cover a lot of repairs anyway or else you have to fight tooth and nail to get anything fixed - if they even will.

Unfortunate that it died, though.

But on the bright side it picked the right time of year to do it - if you can't get it repaired there will be a ton of HDs on sale for BF: you can get a brand new 46" for under $500, probably, and most of the store will gladly give you 2 or 3 years no interest financing, so you might not have the cash right now but if you have $25 per month... :happytv:

I didn't even know that RCA made stuff nowadays. I wouldn't buy a rubber stamp from them. Sorry about your TV tho - I certainly hope you'll be able to get a new one.

Yeah, check your outlet too. Make sure that's not the problem. Sometimes only one jack in an outlet will go bad so make sure to unplug it and plug in something else that you know is working like a fan or lamp.

RCA dont make tv's anymore. bad thing is we didnt know this when we bought the tv. Turns out they sold the "RCA" name to a company in Japan to put on their sub par tvs. Now we are stuck with this crappy tv that dont even work anymore.... I will now never buy anything from them again!!!!

Its not the plug, unfortunately, the green light on the tv comes on but the screen is black. No sound, no activity at all......makes me soooo mad....

where did you buy it? They may have purchase on file and be able to provide receipt.

The bulb??? I will ask hubby when he gets home from work, he is a audio/video manager for many years. If it is the bulb, you can get one on ebay and replace yourself (less than 100$$)

Do a google search using these words 46" RCA TV WON'T COME ON BLOWDRYER TRICK

Its worth a shot before calling the repairman. Good luck

Here's the trick my friend tried. We bought our rca 52 inch rear projection in 2004. It lasted four years without any trouble. We had the same problem with the power button flashing three times without turning the picture on the set then the light would go out. RCA support center was useless and gave us a number to call that worked with warranties in which we no longer had. Anyways I went on line to fixya.com and found others with the same problem with their rca. One of the solutions was to take the back off the tv and blow a hair dryer on the lower left area for ten minutes on a hot setting for the hair dryer then turn the tv on. We did this and it worked on the first try. Although we have vowed not to switch the tv off ( only by the satelite not the rca remote or button on the tv). Because we are not sure if the problem was dust or the power control needed to be heated up.

Some VISA's double the warranty period of purchases. Maybe your credit card company does. Does not hurt to check. Good luck.

That happened to us,only it was a White Westinghouse. 1 1/2 years old. Called them they said something about the circuit board and did we buy the extended warranty. No we didn't. Called Best Buy. Also wanted to know if we bought the extended warranty. Sorry we can't help you. $800 for a T.V. that lasted less than 2 years. Well I won't but White Westinghouse again nor will I buy from Best Buy.

Same thing happened to us last year. We replaced the bulb on our RCA TV and it was as good as new. Ours had sound, but no picture.

Hope your fix is as easy!

Consumer Reports agrees with you. Well, not necessarily about the 'fight tooth and nail' part, but everything else :teeth:

I can understand not buying a particular brand again if it didn't perform satisfactorily, but while it doesn't matter to me whether you ever shop at Best Buy again or not - why wouldn't you? It's not the store's fault that the merchandise turned out to be faulty after a year and a half of use, and (while I agree with Golf4food and CR) it's also not Best Buy's fault that you declined to purchase an extended warranty.

I was wondering this as well. I bought a 52 inch JVC TV at Best Buy a few years ago. Because it was such a large purchase we bought the extended warranty. (That was the first time we've ever done that!) Earlier this year the lamp needed to be replaced, and the extended warranty convered one lamp replacement. So we called Best Buy and they sent out someone to replace it. While they were doing that, they discovered that the light board had some sort of problem and said it needed to be replaced. When they replaced it, the HDMI input broke. Because JVC had stopped making that model, the repair people couldn't get a new one and so Best Buy said that we could come choose a different TV. They gave us a credit for the entire purchase price of the JVC. We ended up choosing one that was a bit more expensive and paying the difference. Now we have a 52 inch Samsung LCD which we love. We bought the extended warranty for this one, as well. Normally I think they are a total waste, but I don't know that I would ever buy another expensive TV without also buying the extended warranty again. Best Buy was great to work with, and we didn't have to fight with them about anything. (And let me add that I am not really a Best Buy fan - I prefer to shop elsewhere when I can, but they had the best price on the TV we wanted. My opinion of them has definitely imporoved thanks to the way they worked with us during all that.

No, the extended warrenty wouldn't have helped the OP as BB refuses to ever pay out on them (google "best buy extended warrenty" you'll get an eye full!) See my own personal story about BB below.

Ditto! Only we DID buy the extended warrenty from Best Buy and they refused to honnor it!!!!! Claimed we broke the tv which "wasn't covered" Gee, how conveinant. Had the tv 3 years, still had a year left on the extended warrenty.

I will NEVER buy anything from BB again, and we have about $5k worth of various applicance purchases we'll be making in the next few years. I'm also bad mouthing them to everyone that will listen, including the tens of thousands of readers on the DIS boards.

So sorry to hear about your troubles! I do have to say though, the title of your post made me think of A Christmas Story when Ralphie says Oh Fudge...and the narration says "Only I didn't say 'fudge'. I said the word, the big one, the queen mother of dirty words, the 'F-dash-dash-dash' word." Hope you find an inexpensive way to fix it!

there used to be a site called bestbuysux or bestbuysucks and it was filled with all the problems people had dealing with them, not limited to their warranty. There were quite a few employees on there letting people know what a joke the warranty was and how they would get out of honoring it. I can't find it in the original format that I found years ago. There are sites that tried to pick up but just aren't as good, informative or as funny.
