Ft Wilderness Cabins

Husband sensing my delirious state over getting up early to check codes and checking every free second I have until CRO closes, he is trying to convience me to give Ft Wilderness Cabins a try. Now I am not a camper, love the outdoors but not the camping part. So he thinks by staying in the cabins he will be happy becuase he loves the place and he thinks the cabins would make me happy. So what I am looking for is opinions on the Cabins. Love them, hate them, whatever. Also DD is taking a couple of friends, they are all 15 and right now we have ressies at Poly, not able to get AAA discount but we would at FWC, but he thinks teenagers would probably like FWC better.

My idea of "roughing it" is staying in a two star hotel. I am not a true camper. That said...we loved staying at a FW Cabin! We didn't get chocolates on the pillows like some other deluxes, but maid service was great. They even ran the dishwasher! The extra room is great. Having a separate bedroom with bunkbeds was wonderful. A full size refrigerator, along with a small kitchen made breakfast a breeze. (Oh no, we didn't cook breakfast, but did have coffee, toasted bagels, fresh fruit, etc.) There are a lot of activities at FW. Check the Dis "Camping Boards". Also, if budget allows, rent a golf cart. They are fun to drive/ride.

We stayed in a cabin last May. My DD called it our cabin home. It was great having the extra space and kitchen. The downfall was the transportation. You really should be sure to rent a car if you are going to be staying there because transportation to/from cabins leaves a lot to be desired. Also, I would suggest one of the cabins by the pool/laundry area. We stayed in the 2100 loop and found it to be a bit of a hike w/ laundry and a 5 year old to get to the pool area and its pretty dark walking back at night. Overall I would recommend it for those not worried about the transportation issue.

We love the Cabins. My wife is not an outdoors type either but she thinks the cabins are great. Prior to joining DVC that was where we always stayed. The extra room is fantastic as is having a full kitchen. And the Campground is such a relaxing place.

I would agree the transportation can be a pain. Take one bus to the front or back of the Campground and then wait for another bus to your destination. We rented a golf cart for our stays there the last 5-6 times we visited. The golf cart was better than renting a car for us as it allows you to get around the campground where a car is supposed to be driven directly to your cabin and directly out of the campground only. With a golf cart you can make runs to the Settlement Depot or Meadows Trading post areas with ease and the kids almost treat it like a Disney "ride".

Like you I check the codes boards constantly!!!! We are staying at fwc for the 2nd time. We absolutely love them. Now we are outdoorsy people, but to me this is definately far from roughing it. We do use the kitchen to cook in. I know nobody else does, but I like to cook.(i am the betty crocker type) And my family prefers homemade to eat out most of the time. Just the quiet, friendly atmosphere is enough to stay there. We stayed at an all stars on our first trip, and it was loud, and caotic. now I am certain the poly isnt like that, but you still have neighbors EVERWHERE. Transportation wasnt an issue for us, its better than all stars. Try it, I think you would like it. Its one of Disneys hidden treasures!!!

If you do choose the cabins, bring small cups for the bathroom, coffee filters, salt and pepper, and perhaps a cookie sheet IF you think you'd cook a frozen pizza or Pillsbury type cookies while there.

We really enjoyed the cabins; they are quiet and the boat ride to MK is hard to beat. The separate bedroom is great; we used it for our young children. But in your case, it might be ideal for you.

Compared to 1 room at the Polynesian, a cabin would give you more space. Think about where you would sleep and if that matters. The girls can be in the back bedroom (1 double + small bunk beds) and you could be in the living room (1 fold down double). Will there be privacy issues? Still only 1 bathroom.

The transportation at the Polynesian is more convenient, and if you plan to split up at all, I think I would personally feel more comfortable with the girls at the Poly if they were mine.

The cabins are great, its not camping. They look like log cabins and they have maid service. Just make sure that you tell reservations that if you do not have kids you don't want the cabin with bunk beds. My husband and i got stuck with that one. Try the cabins you will love them.

IMom just to let you know all the cabins are the same with a bunk bed and a double bed in the bedroom. My DH and I love the cabins but it sure would be nice to have a king or queen instead of the bunk beds and a double.We will put up with it because there is no better place to stay in WDW.

I see you mention the bunks are small, are they not twin sized? Also in the living room is there a sofa and the pull down murphy? Thanks!

Will the girls still be 15 at the time of your trip? Because if they are keep in mind they wouldn't be old enough to drive the golf cart. Wouldn't be much fun for them to have one if they can't drive it. You must be 16 with a valid drivers license to drive. We just returned from the cabins and I had been telling my 17 yr. old she could drive them but we found out she couldn't because she still only has her learners permit.

I think the bunks are twin size. We found them plenty big enough for an adult. In the living room there is a sofa, more of a loveseat size, and then the pull down murphy bed. When the bed is pulled down there's really very little leg room to sit on the sofa unless you had your feet on the bed or curled up underneath you on the couch (we did both!)

You say your DD is bringing a couple friends, so that makes you a group of 6, right? If so you need 2 rooms at the Poly, you can only have 5 in a room . If you're willing to spring for 2 rooms at the Poly than I think that is a MUCH better solution than cramming 2 adults and 3 bathroom hogging teenage girls in a cabin. The Poly's rooms are huge and you will have 2 bathrooms. BIG DEAL for teens.

You are also on the monorail so if you think the girls are responsible enough you could let them go to and from MK and Epcot without you. You have the great resturants there also. I am a food snob, plus DS and I have food allergies and we love Kona Cafe.

Of course 2 rooms at the Poly will cost you 3 times as much as one cabin. Is it in your budget? If not the cabins are great, just not as great as the Poly. I personally like to do long stays at the cabins, esp. at Christmas time. Then do shorter stays at the Poly or AKL. JMHO. Have a great trip.

If you request a cabin close to a camping loop, then the girls could go to a comfort station for showers.....
