We stayed in the cabins the first 3 trips we made to WDW - It was perfect. The transportation can take a bit, but I've had long waits at deluxe reorts as well.... I never thought it was too long to be tolerated...
We loved the extra room. We also loved the quiet, cool peacefullness of the resort after a hot day in the Parks. My son was 4.5,7 & 10 on our stays there. There was plenty to do for him, even tho the pools weren't Themed. I agree that RC should be re-opened as FW'smain pool area. My son learned how to swim there.
We will go back there someday, maybe with my step-grandchildren.
