Hi everyone.

I have not posted in EONS. But here I go.

I had brain surgery for a Chiari Malformation on May 11th. It was almost 7 hours (instead of 3 to 5) and everything seemed to have gone ok as per Dr. Spent 36 painful hours in ICU, included vomiting, the whole thing. I spent a total of 5 days in the hospital and BEGGED to come home. I asked the Dr, if there was anything medically to be done at the hospital that could not be done at home, as I felt I could rest better at home. He gave me my walking papers with STRICT instructions. I was to not lift ANYTHING over 5 pds, no pushing, pulling. Basically nothing until I saw him 10 days letter. OFF i went :dance3:

FFWD 3 days later. I woke up and said to DH, my bandage feels damp :rolleyes1 He then said it is a little blood, not much. :rolleyes1 I called our local clinic and went right over. They removed the bandage and said yes it is leaking CSF (MY WORST FEAR) but not to panic "YET", but to monitor the situation. Well, but evening it was leaking and it was soon panic mode. Somehow I got on a 3 way call with my Neuro Surgeon at home, and he said to lay down, not move at all, and he was in surgery the whole next day, and that I was to go to ER, and as soon as he could he would come to meet me.
I was there at 9am, and saw another Dr Immediately, I was priority 1, said this is defnitely a big leak, lay down, no walking, etc. A few hours later my Dr came saying he is sorry I can NOT go home. (I had packed a bag) So again I am admitted. The plan was to lay still for 48hrs, and if no improvement, a lumbar puncture was to be done, and a tube running from my spine to my brain to FOOL it into only leaking into the spinal tube and not leak from my incision, and if that did not work, another brain surgery.

Well, 48 hrs later, I was leaking MORE. So I go to OR for the LP :scared1:. They missed 2x, finally got it in. I had a horrible reaction, they had to almost put me out, and this procedure was to take 15 min and another 15 min in recovery, and well I was put out, and woke up 4 hours later, to my DH thinking the worst.

Now i spent 8 days lying COMPLETELY flat in bed. My head could not rise 10% nor my feet. I did this and by Day7 was itching to get up. So DH brought the port a potty round. I managed to use this. My legs HURT. I HAD TO GET UP. This did work :cheer2::cheer2: My leak in my head had dried up, so they removed the tube in spine, (fun again, NOT) I begged to go home, and he gave me a 24hr pass. If at ANY time during the 24yhrs i leaked, I was to get back in my bed it was waiting for me. WEll at the 24h mark, I called in, and was free to go..Now I was on STRICT STRICT orders. I could do NOTHING. Lift NOTHING. zero pounds.

Now I had an appt 2 weeks later, this makes 3 weeks wtih 30 staples in my head, adn now I could get them removed. My Dr, is not there :guilty:. He has been called away for emergency surgery. I see his colleage, who obviously knew NOTHING about my complication or anything. HE did remove all staples and I asked small things. I was still told to keep on the agenda my dr, gave me, and he gave me an appt to see my Dr. in 6 weeks, that is next week BTW.

Now, I have UNBELIEVABLE headaches. My head feels grossly misshapen. I tire easily. My right side is a joke. I drop every spoon, towel, plate, I grap with it, so this has NOT changed. My leg, that is even worse. I am dragging it around with me, acutally lifting it at times to go up/down stairs.

My kids are not babies, and are actually amazing while DH is at work. He does do long hours. My son is 14 and does so much, even dd11 helps, dishes, cooking etc.

I am just depressed because I see no improvement. I was driving, and now am told not to. I am told to go back to original orders, lifting 5 lbs max.

I just can not wait to see the Dr. on the 14th to see how I am on his agenda. He did mention that having to go back in and have a 2nd surgery did delay considerably my recovery. It pushed it back weeks, or months. I dont remember anymore.

I just need more patience to deal with the slowness of this. I am such a get up and go person, and I have done EVERYTHING by the book here, as I was told. I let everyone else do those things ;)... I read that by 3 months post surgery you can usually see the final effects. I know that next week makes 2 months, but I guess I was hoping for more. And hoping this is not as good as it gets.

I just had to get that out. It has been eating me up.

I know brain surgery is major, and I had 2 discs removed as well. I had my Dura opened, my tonsils herniated and burned. My neck muscles were cut right across, and the incision is MUCH longer than he thought. He did explain this to me. I think also as a woman, having 1/2 your hair shaved stings. And I just don't see it growing. It seems stunted.

 Gosh you really need a hug.
Honestly, I can't imagine having to deal with everything that has happened to you over the last few months and I hope that soon you will be feeling better and headache free.

Give your body time to recover and don't forget to be kind to yourself. It sounds like your family are a wonderful support and you must be very proud of your children, they sound amazing. I think it is tough for mums to let other people take care of us but sometimes we just have to accept that it is our time to be looked after.

Sending you a BIG Koala cuddle from down under and don't forget there is always someone here if you feel like a chat.:grouphug:

Hope the follow up with your doctor goes well next week and don't forget to take a big list of questions.

Thinking of you

Hang in there, mommasita! I have no words to give you the encouragement you really need and deserve. I know how big your heart is, having read many of your posts ever since I've been here on the Dis. I know that will all come back to you.
Take it day by day, one step at a time (literally :))
Like quasar4legs said, be kind to yourself and allow time to let nature take its course.

You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers
Best wishes for your continued recovery!

Stay strong Momasita!! Sending you lots of prayers, good thoughts and .

I am sure you must be frustrated and just want to be better and get bak to being "you". Until then, let everyone pamper you.

With everything I went through last year, I am speaking from experience.

Sometimes our bodies take longer to heal, especially if we go through stuff more than once, (Mine was x7 operations last year).

I do know a young girrl from our church had this surgery. She wanted her hair to grow back too. But in the summer, short is good. Buy yourself some nice lipstick or earrings.

Wishing you all the best.

It absolutely broke my heart to hear what you are going through... you know sometimes we get in our own worlds and forget that others are going through heavy things as well.. Please know you can message me anytime you need to talk.. I am around and on facebook... I will send you my email as well.. yikes honey, you have been through a lot. Take care of yourself.... I know your family is stepping up to the plate... I hear you on patience, mine is nil and I get ticked that I am not doing better, but it is what it is, and I am still here.. Big hugs..

You have been through SOOOO much. I cannot even comprehend. You must be a very strong person to handle this as well as you have. I can tell you that I couldn't.

I do think you need to give yourself more time. When I read about everything that you've been through, I know you have a lot more healing to do.

I hope when you can talk to your regular doctor, he can give more info. I know that when I was going through tough health issues, even though I couldn't get "fixed" right away, having some knowledge about my situation made me feel better in control.

I hope you are doing better and that they have figured out some of what isnt quite right!

If you are not already over there, check out butyoudontlooksick.com, especially the message boards. I know lots of spoonies who have had decompression and other such surgeries, so people there may have some advice.

Hope you are doing better!

Thank you everyone!!

I saw the Dr. Today, and got some good news!!

My incision is healing well. Not perfectly clean, due to the leak, but healing nicely. The Dr. did have to get 2 other Dr's opinions, as he says this is a rarity (the CSF leak) in his practice.

I have no restrictions now really, aside from the obvious. No roller coasters, horse back riding, etc. That is OK with me.

He mentioned that the work done was mainly 3cm to the left, and 3cm to the right of my incision, so that is why I still have pain in those areas, and some swelling. He went over ALL the work he did, and boy was it a LOT.

He also mentioned it taking years to make my body weakened, and that it naturally it would take a while to come back. I am not able to go to the gym or work out, but walk, SWIM :), and work will have to wait. I see him again in 3 months, and he said at that time, possibly we will try to go back VERY slowly, perhaps one day a week, or 2.

I will now enjoy my summer, my family, and my Disboards :goodvibes

All in all a good week for me. I celebrated my 41st birthday yesterday, and realized not to let life pass me by. I am lucky to be here, and right now I am on a mission to enjoy my time.

Hoping and praying that your recovery progresses smoothly and steadily and that you have no further problems.

Nice to see you posting again. :flower3:

I am so sorry what you have been through momasita. You are a very strong woman. Sending hugs hug: and saying prayers that your recovery continues to progress smoothly.

Just read this and OMG what a time you've had. Sending big hugs your way across the Atlantic. Hope your improvement continues.

Thank you, each and every one of you. It warms my heart to read such fine messages. I think this board is the best on the DIS :) ;)

A little update:

We are now about 14 weeks after surgery, and some things have gotten better. I am waiting for a Dr appt, as I have some memory issues. I can not read anymore :sad2:. I just forget the page AS I am reading it?? I am/was an avid reader, so this is a real downer for me. I forget if I took any pills, or simple things ALL day long. I never noticed this prior, and it is most definitely new, so I am hoping to get in to see the Dr before October. I know I will, he is just on holiday now :)

Kids went back to school today, and it was honestly SO nice to have a quiet house, and be ALONE for the first time since May. I missed them, but it was pandemonium when they returned, and each had to outdo each other in talking. I enjoyed floating on my pool with the 90 degree heat :)

I hope everyone is doing as well as can be expected. :grouphug:

Thank you for the update, mommasita :)

I'm glad some things have gotten better for you and pray that each day you continue to heal even more.

I'm sorry you are having some memory issues and hope that can be taken care of. I love to read too, so I can only imagine how frustrating that would be for you. Maybe you can try a book on CD?

I'm glad you got some quiet time for yourself while your kids went back to school. I'm sure you miss them, but it's nice to have that time and pool time!

You will stay in my thoughts and prayers!

I can imagine the frustration, and you must wonder whether life will ever be back on track again. Hang on in there, and enjoy the peace and quiet and pool time. Let's hope that things will shortly be on the up for you. Sending hugs. :grouphug::grouphug::grouphug:
