How do you get rid of them??? I have no fruit out, but they doggone things keep multiplying anyway. These guys are totally annoying.

I had a bunch...they drove me CRAZY!

I would throw out your trash, pour some baking soda or cleaner down the garbage disposal..I had some there. Grr...

I got one of those sticky fly things you hang from the ceiling and it got rid of them quickly. Also, I've heard that sugar water or some sort of sweet liquid with dish detergent mixed in...the flies will not be able to fly after they land in it? Not sure exactly why, but I left a drink in the sink and came back and there were a bunch of dead flies in it...works for me! :rotfl:

Good luck...I know how annoying that is...

SUPER SUPER EASY WAY!!!

Fill kitchen sink with soapy bubbly water, use your dish soap like Dawn/Palmolive etc. The fruit flies LOVE the scent of the soap so they dive into the water, then they can't get out. Empty sink and flies go down the drain.

Goodbye fruit flies!

They're most likely drain flies instead of fruit flies. You need to clean out the drain and pipes to completely get rid of them.

I'm pretty sure they're fruit flies because they came to me from an infested bananna. (Couldn't resist!) I just didn't act quickly enough when I saw them emerge. Plus, they actually avoid the sink.

They do seem to like orange juice, but only one has managed to drown itself so far. Maybe I'll try adding some Dawn to it and see what happens. I'll let you all know. This from someone who captures and releases spiders...

Drown em in beer. Just a small bowlful set on the countertop and they'll be attracted to the smell and will fly into it and drown themselves. I suppose if you don't have a beer on hand maybe some wine will do. But if they're going to plunge to their death, let em die happy. :rotfl:

We set out wine and put a cone shaped piece of paper in the glass. Seems to trap a lot of them--apparently they have trouble getting back out of the cone.

That's what the University of Kentucky website said to do, but they suggested cider vinegar. However, I'm sure after some beer/wine, they'll NEVER get out of the cone!!! :rotfl:

Off to do my science experiment! I'll see how many jars I have and I'll see what works best.

I'll report back tomorrow!

another one for the cone deal i just leave it out for a couple of weeks i think mine are coming from the fruit I buy at wegmans i think they use very little pesticides on their fruit this is the second year in the row it has happens and only when the wegmans fruit comes in the house but the cone does work

I got them in an apartment once because my neighbor was a gigantic pig who never cleaned anything. His kitchen was stinky and disgusting.

I went and cleaned his kitchen - took almost a whole day. There were gazillions of them in there. It was creepy and GROSS.

But once it was clean, bye-bye bugs.

Doubt this would work for you.

Best of luck!

Apple cider vinegar in a small bowl (I used custard dish) and put a couple drops of Dawn in it. I guess they're attracted to the apple scent and the dish soap traps them.

Actually if you take some wine and put diswashing liquid in it and set it out in a bowl near where the flies are you will catch tons of them. You need to change the liquid about every day but eventually after about three days you will get them all.

I tried apple vinegar before...didn't work

I just went around the house with a dust buster and sucked them up! I also used a towel and had fun hitting them. my dog also had a good time chasing them. yeah, we made a little game out of it!:lmao:

Small bowl, cider vinegar, cover bowl with plastic wrap (Saran, Glad, etc), punch half dozen or so small holes with tooth-pick, ice-pick, etc. Wait till all are in and drowned, pour contents down sink and rinse.

Ok, I don't see that. These critters fly, and they're FAST! I can't get them on a surface long enough!! Even the dogs can't get them.

Preliminary results:

They don't like beer :confused3

They do like the cider vinegar :cool1:

They also seem to like orange juice, so I sacrificed my beer jar and put OJ in it. The cider vinegar cone/jar has already trapped a few with a lot more hanging around the edges of the cone. (Do these guys live on the scent??) I'd had some OJ in a bowl, so I put that in the beer jar. I also put clear tape over my drain. So far, no bugs coming out of there.

As for the wine, I thought I had one of those small bottles, but I don't. While I don't mind finishing up a beer in the name of science, an entire bottle of wine was beyond me, so I didn't open the only bottle I had. :rotfl2:

Water works for ya. Water is free and it worked great for me.:thumbsup2

The only way to be "rid" of them is to find what the larvae are growing in. We've found that sometimes "fruit" flies are really "veggie" flies. Check your potatoes. We've found that they love to colonize them as well as fruit. The first big "outbreak" of them we had we were stumped because we didn't have any fruit out... and then one day I went to our pantry and found a bag of potatoes that were past their prime and full of flies. I threw the bag out, and a day or so later, no more files!

This totally works!!!!

Take a cup or little jar. Pour some cider vinegar in the bottom. Make a paper cone with a small hole at the tip and put in into the cup so the point is just above the vinegar. Take around the edges of the paper/cup border. They go down inside and cant get out. Starts working almost immediately.
