For the summer, i thought i would get my 7 year old started on her 1st scrapbook/journal. Then I went to Michael's, holy moly, scrapbooking is an expensive proposition even with my collection of 40% off coupons.

Any thoughts for a newbie to do this frugally?

All you really need for scrapping is some adhesive, a good straight paper cutter, scissors, and some paper- everything else is frills and not particualarly needed. My suggestion would be to buy things as you need them for a specific project- maybe get a kit (using a 40% off coupon) for your daughter to start with.

Walmart is clearancing out practically their whole scrapbooking department and lots of good stuff is on the cheap.

Perhaps sit down with her and decide on some projects so you know what specific items you'll need to complete those projects.

Again-good scissors, adhesives, paper(try getting a bulk pack with several colors), and a black pen to start with.

Big Lots is another frugal find. They often have name brand items such as letter stickers, stickers, brads/eyelets, and pens for 1-5 dollars. You could easily build your collection of supplies from there.

It isn't a cheap hobby, but you can spend wisely and do it on a budget.

Look for scrapbooking supplies in discount stores like Dollar General, Family dollar etc, I just found 12x12 paper packs there and stickers too. Dollar Trees often have alot of supples too. Big Lots is a great source too. If you have AC Moore or Hobby Lobby in your area you will find lots to choose from. But be warned, once the two of you start its addictive :)

When I started my niece on scrapbooking, I bought a 8 x 8 pad of coordinating paper from JoAnn's that was on clearance (you can also look for coupons, etc.) Then, a couple colored markers and some adhesive. I cut some of the paper down to matting size for her with my trimmer, and otherwise she had a pair of more kid friendly sissors. I also bought an 8 x 8 album on clearance.

I think the total cost - pad, album, markers and adhesive was under $15 (this was 5 yrs ago, but I don't think prices have changed that much). It took her about 6 - 8 months to fill her album, and I bought her more things on clearance over time once I realized she would keep working on it. She's now 14, and even so, I generally fund her scrapbooking with my "extras" and a few basic supplies.

If only I could be more budget with my own stuff...

Oh this is my deparment!

don't forget garage sales! i have found some great bargains!

I second the Dollar Tree, great finds there esp. for a newbie scrapper. And I have found great stuff at our Big Lots also.

Other than that you can by the Pioneer albums for less $, and they have page protectors included.

have fun!

We had to paint the outside of our house, so we went to Lowes and Home Depot. They have those color chips. I believe it was Home Depot that had Disney paint. Well, the paint chip cards are in the shape of Mickey's head! And in every color of the rainbow. I grabbed like fifteen of the little suckers for a future scrapbook! Free! This was current: 2010.

You can sign up online for Michaels and AC Moore for their emails and there are usually coupons along with them. Coupons are great for the more expensive items like paper trimmers, punches.

Have fun!

Michael's and Joanns has those 8.5 x 11 paper packs for like $4 and a lot of times they are on sale. They have several colors in each pack. I use those a lot.

Some of my local scrapbook stores have garage sales. People sell their unwanted supplies for super cheap.

If you are a member of Sams Club or Costco, you can find some good finds. Especially for bulk solid colors (which you can never have too much of it seems). If you look on Craigslist you can sometimes find the garage sales that sell scrapbook supplies in your area. Also, a lot of churches offer free crops and they often have various die-cut machines that you can use free of charge.
