I am wondering if anyone has been to this campground and how it was? We tented at FW last year and had such a blast. Unfortunately it will most likely be awhile before we get back to Disney. I am looking for some clean places with activities for the kids closer to home (we live in NJ). I know that nowhere will be as FABULOUS as the Fort ... but there have to be other nice places to camp, right? Frontier Town looks really hokey and fun on their website. If you've been there or can recommend any family campgrounds in my region I would truly appreciate it:)

I know they book a year ahead and are always full, sites for an rv can be hard to get not sure about tent sites. They have plenty to do there and also have a shuttle to take you into OC which can be nice as parking can be hard to find or expensive. The gokart tracks nearby are really good and don't forget to get some Thrasher's french fries!!!!!!!!!!!!

Frontier town is fun for kids - but hard to get reservations for. We tried in Dec of 2009 to get reservations for 3 sites (we had 3 families going) for the summer of 2010 - and it was a no go.

We've stayed a few times at Castaways, which is the closest campground to Ocean City itself. It's right on the bay with a little beach. When the tide is out you can walk out on sand bars in the bay and we found tons of star fish, crabs and clams. The kids had a BLAST doing that. We ended up only going over to the ocean beach 1 day because the kids were really enjoying the beach at the campground. They have games and crafts scheduled for the kids (and parents) to participate in. The pool is too small and crowded for the size of the campground, but that's our only complaint.

They also run shuttles to Ocean City, so if the no driving aspect of FW is something you'd like to replicate elsewhere, it's possible at Castaways.

we used to go there every year. It is close to Assateque Island, where you can go to the ocean and see the wild horses. It is difficult to get reservations far in advance, however; we always had luck with getting reservations when the time approached. I guess there had always been cancellations to our benefit. It isn't the Fort, but i have friends who try to compare it. It may be in the top ten on the east coast for campgrounds.
The waterpark is great for kids and I always have fun too.(and admission is included with your stay) The western theme park is neat to visit. They have the best milkshakes at their ice creme parlor at the entrance.

Assateague Island State Park is on the beach about 5 or 6 miles south of Frontier Town. There is camping there, complete with nature centered activities. Assateague is also a national park...the state park section is on the northern end. Both have camping but the state has hot water showers or so I'm told. We will be joining friends there this summer. There are websites for both and booking can be done online.

We've been many times for day trips, but never to camp there. It looks like it would be a lot of fun to stay overnight.

The Western part is alot of fun- shootout at the OK Corral. Steam train that you ride on and it takes you around the campgrounds (but keep an eye out for train robbers who'll want to steal your bag of gold! ;)).

The water park is cute also...you will defintiely want a golf cart if staying at FT.
I think even if you aren't able to get a reservation at Frontier Town, you could try Fort Whaley- Frontier Town's cousin about 15 minutes down to road... http://www.frontiertown.com/fort-whaley/

I've never stayed there and don't plan too. Different friends go religiously and even they tell me it's very crowded - and kids are left to run wild. My neighbor actually told me "once we pull up, we let the kids go and barely see them the whole week" :confused3 . That being said they all seem to like it, but I like things a little quieter on my vacation. If given the choice I'd much rather be over at Assateague.

If you're looking for an amusement park with a campground, you could try Knoebel's. It's off I-80 in PA and is very family friendly and fun.

Second that.:thumbsup2

Knoebels is defiantly the biggest hidden Gem of the Northeast.

We go every year for a few days and camp at J&D down the road.

This is an old time amusement park with classic and new rides with a campground. I have never tasted any better food at any park better then at this place. My wife and I would giggle every time we paid for anything because of the value. We live near the Boardwalks in Central NJ, and everything there is so expensive, so paying $20 for all of us to eat Breakfast and have food left over is a pleasant surprise. We pack light on the food because it is the best park food and at a good value.

The admission into the park is FREE, FREE parking and FREE entertainment. It seems that a lot of the campers would watch the evening show at the park then head back to the camp fires.
The camping at their campground is tight and no privacy. You are right on top of your neighbors, but the ease of walking right to the park may be worth it for some.

For such an unknown place, it has won many awards, even beating out the Mouse.

What's the name of the campground you're referring to. We have stayed in the premises once and it was so tight, crowded and really loud at night. Liked Knoebel's ok, just not a fan of their camping experience.

Knoebel's also has their sister campground, Lake Glory, which has free shuttles to the park if you don't want to drive. Drove through there last year and it is very wide open. I like the looks of J&D, but won't camp there, because they don't allow tents. That is what I started out in, and there is nothing wrong with the people who use them and I don't patronize parks who look down on tenters.

Best Regards,
Norm

We stay at Lake Glory - it's a little more open and less hectic than Knoebel's campground right at the park. (Much quieter!)

I am guessing that you have to be 21 or older to book a spot. I have a 17 year old daughter, and she and some friends were going to a concert two months ago and wanted to make a reservation at a nearby campground. The oldest was a friend's brother at 20 years old. They tried 4 campgrounds, and each one said you had to be 21 years old to make a reservation. So, one of the parents ended up going along, booking two sites, and staying with them for the week-end. Which, by the way, was great for all of the parents involved.

We've been visiting FrontierTown for the last few years. We go in September during an off week (in between Labor Day and Bike Week), so the crowds aren't that bad. I really like it there, and my 2 year old has a blast. The waterpark is usually still open on the weekends, but the Western park is closed by then.

IMO, it's a really nice campground. My daughter's favorite thing is just to ride around on the golf card all day. It has a nice pool and playground, boat slips, a really nice camp store and deli counter, ice cream parlor, and a game room.

I don't think we're going to make it this year, since we're headed to Disney for 10 days in November, and I'll be out of vacation days at work.

Smithkids knows the trick. If you stay at Ft. Whaley you can drive in and use the facilities at Froniert Town.

Some other choices for camping/parks are:

Hershey Highmeadow Campground at Hershey Park

Kings Dominion Camp Wilderness at Kings Dominion Park

Now I don't have a specific campground link, but there are many in the area of Colonial Williamsburg/Bush Gardens Williamsburg.

Have a fun summer!!

I'd give a thumbs up to Frontiertown. We've been there and Fort Whaley and FT is infinitely better. In fact, we have waterfront reservations for Frontiertown for next summer (2012). I didn't find that kids were unsupervised, but there were an awful lot of golf carts running around. If you want quiet, there's not much of it here but the amenities are top notch.

We like Castaways Campground which is just before Frontier Town. I think this is there 4 season and they have already won awards for their service and grounds. You won't be disappointed.
