Frontier Seating Question

My husband just booked a flight for next week on Frontier! There are 3 types of seats to choose - $6, $15 and $20. Most of the $6 seats remaining to prepurchase are middle seats or seats in the back of the plane near the bathroom, none of which he wants and he is hoping to get assigned a better seat at check in. Is this a good strategy? He doesn't really care much where he sits, but would prefer to be in a window or aisle and not next to a bathroom.

It's a 50/50 shot on where he winds up. BUT, from what I understand they assign seats to those without assignments in the order they purchased the ticket and since a LOT of people purchase farther ahead then 1 week, he could easily wind up with that middle seat.

Someone on Flyer Talk said Frontier assigns seats upon check in from back to front, so advised to not check in right at the 24 hour mark and wait until seats being assigned are closer to the front of the plane
