From WDW to DL With Love - January 06, 2011 part 5

What we were told about Manzanillo was that it was decided that the area was not safe after dark...not sure why that was decided but I saw the hours on TK were scheduled to open while we were supposed to be in port and questioned how that could be and that was the answer I was given...not sure if true or not. Definite lack of communication on the cruise but we really enjoyed ourselves and loved meeting everyone!

What annoyed me is that we left Cabo an hour earlier then we did in 2005. Other port times seemed short too. Disney used to be great for its port times. I used to love being first in and last out, but when we left Puerto Vallarta before anyone else, I just scratched my head. I would have personally preferred PV/Mazatlan/Cabo to Manzanillo/PV/Cabo as I wasn't that impressed with Manzanillo. I actually looked at some of the departure times on the Westerns and I can't believe how ridiculous it's gotten. 5:30PM? This is a cruise line that used to stay there till 11PM.

Overall I enjoyed this cruise a LOT, really I did, but there were definitely some issues.

First, we requested a server for this cruise over 8 months ago. We didn't get him. We were then told he was no longer on the boat. That was until we saw him on day 4 and in fact he was on our rotation. I'm not going to complain too much because our servers were great, but for what we paid for the cruise, and for being in Concierge, you'd think the dining room manager could have figured it out, but even if they couldn't, I would have been fine had we not been lied to about it.

I did notice the huge difference in preparation between a ship that has been doing 3 sea days a week already to a ship that had only been doing 1. Also, the navigators were horrible, the club hours were ridiculous at times (Not opening until 11 on some sea days is just odd. In 2005 the club opened at 9am on every sea day).

Further, the beer/wine/margarita tastings were horribly hard to find and I was exceedingly disappointed with the non disney ones. 3 glasses of wine for $15 was ridiculous when 2 of them 3 were sold on board and BOTH for less than $30 a bottle at ship prices. Considering the pours were around 3 ounces, we didn't even get our money's worth at Disney's inflated prices. When the wine/tequila sales guys got off, the tastings were better but they were barely advertised. One of our sailing party members was the only one at the beer tasting on the last day. We'd never have known about it if it wasn't for the concierge.

Further, the loss of the pubmaster position is ridiculous. Diversions was a ghost town by 10pm, on a cruise that I know had a large number of adult parties. Wavebands didn't look any better out the door. On the 05 Magic cruise, the bars were always hopping. I've never been the dance club type (I prefer sports bars/jazz clubs) but it seriously looked bad.

I spent most of my time in the evenings up at outlook bar. Craig was bar none one of the best bartenders I've ever encountered on a Disney ship. I generally just told him to make me something and he threw all sorts of stuff into a mixer and it almost always came out good (The bad ones were on the house). Seriously, if you're cruising on the Wonder before June, find out where Craig from Scotland is tending bar and ask him to make you something. Directions were either include a specific liquor to sweet or sour to just go for it.

Palo was definitely improved from my last trip, though for the love of god they need to bring back the Carbonara. The Wonder Palo menu looked far better then the Dream Palo menu.

For the first time in our 3 concierge sailings, I can say it was absolutely worth it. Mike was quite possibly the best concierge I've ever dealt with anywhere. And what really makes it scary is I heard Tawanda's guests saying how they were glad they had Tawanda instead of Mike because as good as Mike is, Tawanda was better. I'm really short of an explanation as to how that is possible though because I don't think there is anything Mike could have done to possibly have been any better.

The dinner menu's were very well handled by a crew that had very little experience with anything beyond the rotation menu and the pirates menu.

The pins were a mess, which is why I avoided them. Good for those of you who stuck it out in line and had fun doing it.

Canal day was great. The commentary was MUCH better than 2005. The weather was better and I had much more fun being prepared for it from the previous trip. I have no idea what deck 10 forward looked like. The most fun I had was in Diversions at the Pedro Miguel lock where I watched it go from bright sunshine to darkness. The wonder definitely nailed this one better than the Magic on its first time.

To all the disboarders I met, and those I didn't or didn't recognize if I did, I had a great time and you guys definitely made it great.

As people get Galleries and other things posted up, don't hesitate to PM me with links and I can add them to the site. I'll probably keep it up for at least a few more months.

Just have to vent....
To "You know who you are" - Very upsetting to see people trying to make a profit from FE gifts received! :sad2:

Now that is really the lowest of the low.

The first day Navigator had the thing about the tea I was told..I remember seeing something about it - but ignored it. Same thing about the galley tour. The only reason I knew about the Ducky private session was our booklet that came with our luggage tags had it - we still had to ask time and time again until we found out about where the sign-ups were. Not great communication unfortunately...

Wow...that is sad!

The only reason that I found out about the galley tour is that I went to guest services and asked about it. At that time, they could only offer to put me on the waitlist, which fortunately came through for me.

We wondered if there was some kind of curfew. Did anybody else see the trucks with police or army in the back with machine guns in the afternoon?

Check out ebay... I saw the pin and a lanyard from the FE on there... unreal some people!! So ungrateful!

I loved everything I got and I too would not think of selling any of them.

Who ever has the pin listed is making it appear to be a disney pin... it is not! It is however very special to most of us.

Both are listed as "limited editions". I am in a good mind of reporting them for misleading listing.

Looks like whoever had the pin and lanyard listed on ebay has removed them.... lol

I tried getting a set of pins but seems in my trading to help others I ended up with 2 Aruba and no Puntesaries (sp) If anyone needs Aruba or has an extra Puntasaries and wants to trade, please let me know.

They were still active as of about 5 minutes ago.

I hope that you manage to find the Puntarenas pin. Unfortunately I only have one of each.

I still see it as active - unless there was another one that I missed?

I didn't want to upset the givers by posting exactly which ones they were. But, yes, you are right. That one and another Panama cruise design. I'm pretty sure I know who it is based on their hometown but since there were many people that hung FEs but did not participate(!) and there were a lot of castmembers on our cruise, it's possible I'm wrong. There could have been others from the same Florida city on the cruise and I don't want to wrongly accuse anyone.

No worries - I'll make sure they don't profit from they! :rolleyes1

I checked this out as well, but I agree with giving them the benefit of the doubt.

When I first read about this here I wondered if it was the lovely park Lithograph that was being sold. I got an Epcot one and I will have this framed and it will get a very special place in our apartment.

What annoyed me is that we left Cabo an hour earlier then we did in 2005. Other port times seemed short too. Disney used to be great for its port times. I think that we can thank our lucky star that we did not go to Mazatlan on this cruise as this would probably have taken us there on January 18th, which was the day a Canadian tourist was caught in a cross fire and was hit by a stray bullet. I rather suspect it would not have been much fun being there that day. I know that DCL is concerned enough to have removed Mazatlan from the itineraries until at least the second half of April.

As to the cruise, we had a wonderful time. There are a few things that can and should be improved upon. I thought the pin releases were not very well organized and the character interaction lacked both quantity and variety. Other than that, we had a fantastic time. Our serving team was great and our stateroom host was an absolute star. The crossing was breathe-taking and I am glad that we stayed down on deck 4, where it was relatively quiet.

My favourite moments were sailing past the Dream in a gorgeous sunset, the talk by Ridley Pearson and the signing afterwards, Mouse Adventures at Sea and finally managing to snorkel after years of trying at Puerto Vallarta.

Corinna

As far as my favorite part of the cruise, other than the crossing, has to be, ohh wait... so many things to choose from, I loved the sketch that Ducky did for me for my daughter. It was from a pic of her giving mickey an eye exam.

Also I had so much fun with Ricky Kalmon. My daughter and I were hypnotized during the family one and my DH and I were in the adult one. I was the one with the hampster for those who saw it. DH was the one singing. Also DD was on the meet your match game. The newest married couple.

We had a blast and really loved meeting all of you. I just wish we could have met more of the disboard friends.

Hopefully in the future we will meet again.

Thanks to all that made this a wonderful trip.

I know there was a group of you who did Zip line in PV.....how was it??? Would you recommend it or HIGHLY recommend it???

Also if anyone did any other MUST do's in PV or Cabo please share.....My family and I will be doing the Mexican Riv cruise in Sep and would love some suggestions.

I don't know what the group did, but we did the "Outdoor Adventure" in PV, and absolutely LOVED it (it's now my wife's favorite excursion). It included zip lines, mule ride, rappelling down a waterfall, and transportation by zodiac...and a nice light lunch to boot. Very professional, very high energy, and very fun...we were all rooting each other on, as some had to overcome fears to do some of the more "exciting" lines and rappels.

We'd be up for some suggestions for Cabo as well (we walked around Cabo shopping and eating, still very fun!), as we will be on the Sept. 2011 MR cruise as well...we'll see you there!

I was thinking the same thing..only thing I could guess would be the pin RRBB gave us

*Sigh*. It has enormous sentimental value, but in absolute terms I would think that not many people would be in the market. Actually, even the official Disney PC crossing pins that so many of us waited in line for are (in my humble opinion) worth way more to those of us that participated in the cruise than to collectors...even though they are very limited editions. The last time I looked at prices on the Magic's PC RePo pins (yesterday on eBay), they were going for about the price a new pin would sell for now.

And I agree, it is kid of low to sell one of these precious gifts!

I tried getting a set of pins but seems in my trading to help others I ended up with 2 Aruba and no Puntesaries (sp) If anyone needs Aruba or has an extra Puntasaries and wants to trade, please let me know.

Oh sadness...I was able to buy a Puntarenas (sp?) pin to complete a set at Treasure Ketch the night before we hit Los Angeles...the stores were near deserted, and on a whim I asked if they had any Puntarenas pins left. They also had whatever ports Chip and Dale where, along with the Stitch port. If I hear of anyone with an extra, I'll have them look you up.

The day of the Los Angeles pin release, quite a few of us where trying to pin broker deals to help others finish their sets, and I can see how one could lose track of what they have and what they need.

Canal day was great. The commentary was MUCH better than 2005. The weather was better and I had much more fun being prepared for it from the previous trip. I have no idea what deck 10 forward looked like.

It was actually really great out there (at least in the area where I was). I couldn't sleep, so went up around 4:45am, and it was a surreal scene...all of those ships waiting their turn, visible only by their lights. Before dawn we were moving, and then turning to line up with the "approach lights", just as dawn broke. By then people were gathering, and we all talking and having a good time as we first made our way to, then through the first set of locks. When I finally gave up my place at the rail, I noticed that the forward area was packed, but people were being pretty good about allowing those further back time up from to take pictures, etc. All in all, it was a good crowd, with good conversation to be had. That pre-dawn still seems so surreal to me.

As far as my favorite part of the cruise, other than the crossing, has to be, ohh wait... so many things to choose from, I loved the sketch that Ducky did for me for my daughter. It was from a pic of her giving mickey an eye exam.

Ducky was so nice and down to earth! One of my twins and I approached him at dinner, and he was more than happy to converse with us about one of my daughter's favorite characters...Oswald the Lucky Rabbit!

The video is about 2 minutes long, talks more about jobs than the ship. But there she is!

Hi everyone,

First, I wanted to say I'm so sorry I didn't meet any of you!! I had wondered who everyone was. It is totally my fault because life got super crazy the last few months prior to our trip, and then I hurt my back, and so I was hardly able to participate in the boards prior to the trip...

I'm sure I did see many of you, but just didn't know who you were! I hung out at the Quiet Cove pool a lot... I loved that pool! So, if any of you were there a lot, I'm sure we saw each other. I always just hung out either in the pool, or in the little platform area where there is like 2 inches of water. Loved it!! ;) Anyway, we had an amazing time, and we sure lucked out on the weather!!! (I know it was super hot for parts of it, but with the exception of rain one evening, it was blue skies the entire time! Can't get any better than that in terms of weather!)

We loved our servers, too. Got to know them so well, and they were just so nice and did a great job!! We loved Palo (made it there two times for dinner)... soooo nice!! :) Our stateroom host was SO nice, too, and so personable. :)

We got home late Saturday night. We stayed in LA one night to visit friends.

We loved Cabo... that was one of our favorite ports. We also really liked Aruba! I don't know if it was just me, but I thought Puntarenas, Costa Rica was pretty sketchy!! But, I did not do a shore excursion. My DH and youngest son did a shore excursion in the rain forest (the one where you do a rain forest walk and go across suspension bridges. If any of you were on that, the guy with the little 8 year old red headed boy was my DH and son). Anyway, they LOVED that, but my other son and I stayed behind (I could not do the shore excursion becuase of my back injury), and my oldest son decided to stay behind with me. So, my oldest son (who is 10) and I went on that beach that was right next to the ship. I had local men coming up to me and staring at me, and saying, "Chica...Chica".... and then this one guy in the water was constantly staring at me and getting closer and closer to me, and he just gave me the creeps! Anyway, I just got this bad feeling in my stomach, and did not feel safe by myself with just my son, so we went back on the ship. That was dissapointing because I was looking forward to spending time in Costa Rica and just seeing the town, etc. I talked to a couple other people on the ship who did not do a shore excursion, and they felt the same as me.

Other than that, everything was amazing. The Panama Canal was AWESOME!!! My dad is friends with Kenneth Pucket (the Panama Canal pilot), so we spent time with him, and got even more good info on the Panama Canal from him. Also, my dad was able to get my family and he and my mom (they came on the cruise with us) up on the bridge of the Wonder one afternoon!! My dad is a harbor pilot, so he has piloted all the cruise ships like ours (so all the pilots that got on the ship via a pilot boat is what my dad does for a living up in Alaska)... anyway, since he is a pilot, the captain let us come up on the bridge one afternoon. That was really neat for my kids because they have never seen the bridge of a ship. My DH and I have seen it before because we've gone with my dad before on some of his jobs up in AK. So, we felt very fortunate to have that experience on the Wonder! The Micky Whistle is actually shaped as a Mickey Mouse...haha!!! You can't miss it on the control panel. :)

We loved the entertainment on the ship, too... our kids loved the kids club. Both my kids made friends on the trip who became their "best friends" for the 2 weeks. :) Overall, it was just a wonderful experience.

Well, we will be forever dreaming of this trip!! It was awesome. Being able to sail through the Panama Canal is just amazing.... an experience our whole family will never forget!

Take care,
Kathy

Ok so I am cracking up to hear that someone would be selling FE gifts on ebay....seriously?!?!?!

I don't know if I should take it as a compliment or like a garage sale and they could not wait to get rid of it! :rotfl2:

We had an AMAZING time on this cruise! It was our best to date!!!

Sorry BUNCO never happened. DCL was not so easy to nail down a location and the promenade louge always seemed busy.

We are so thankful to have met so many wonderful people onboard and to have had time to hang out with our old friends!!!

Whew!! I thought I could not find Bunco!!:lmao:

And will everyone be mad if I bid on that!? I don't think I got one - and Brooklyn please I am not taking a dig at you. We got SOOOOO much great stuff.

Or maybe that Ebay'er took my FE gift!!? We need a super sleuth to figure out who that person is and see if they were Fe'ers or not.:rotfl:

I told my cousins kids I was going to steal theirs!!:thumbsup2 Unless my daughter is hiding it!!

I wanna go back!! Who is with me!!

And will everyone be mad if I bid on that!?

No, not if you leave them negative feedback once it arrives. ;)

I don't know if I should take it as a compliment or like a garage sale and they could not wait to get rid of it! :rotfl2:
I would definitely take it as a compliment! I'm secretly jealous they are not trying to sell my FE gift. :lmao: Although it was your design. :rotfl:

I just can't seem to fall asleep tonight. I was exhausted from the travelling yesterday but now I'm wide awake. I must still be on CA time. It's 11:45pm here in FL and I have to get up early to go to work. Ugh! I probably should've started unpacking but I'm procrastinating as usual.

At least it's casual week at my work this week. Thanks goodness! I'm not sure any of my dress pants fit after this cruise. I wore my stretch jeans to work today. :lmao:

I just can't believe anyone woulld sell those gifts. I am stunned! Plus, the cheek of passing them of as limited edition as if they were Disney ones too.

And Corinna - we saw the Mexican Army ? load up those trucks with the machine guns!! Freaked my DD11 out! As did the soliders with guns when we got off in PV. Some of this is why some of us CA'ers don't travel to Mexico much.

Alaska...Alaska anyone?? I really wanna go back.;)

We've arrived safely home in Sydney and back to the hum-drum of everyday life! I just wanted to thank everyone for their thoughtful and wonderful FE gifts. The children were so excited and it made the cruise that much more special. We've loved our whole trip and have really enjoyed exploring the states.

Hoping to meet more of you on another cruise in the future perhaps!

Alaska...Alaska anyone?? I really wanna go back.;)

Me too! We did an Alaska cruise on RCI in 1999. LOVED it! But, we are waiting until DD3 is a little older so we can really enjoy it. And, as much as I love Disney, I really think we might do RCI again. We really like that cruise line too and their Alaska ships have a solarium (indoor heated pool area). Didn't get to enjoy it last cruise as I really didn't think about packing swimsuits for an Alaska cruise. I also heard they now have Dreamworks characters onboard, mostly Shrek characters I think, so my DD can get her character fix.

I would never dream of selling any of my wonderful FE gifts.Brooklyn we love your pin and it is very special to us beccause it reminds us of you and your family and all the time we spent together on the TA MEd and PC.

We left DL and now we are in Las Vegas until the 27th. We visited with a couple we met on the 08 PC cruise- yes friendships do continue.

We never knew about the dessert buffet until the next day,Not that we needed more food but it would have been fun to go to.

My camera chip went bad and I lost all the pictures from the day we got on the ship to the canal crossing. If anyone has pictures of John and I at the meet and great, champagne girls get together, pj breakfast or any other event please Pm me . I would gladly pay for reprints.

Hope we all met again- hopefully Hawaii- hear that DCL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
