Great dog stories!!

Hugs to EMUM - so sorry for your loss.

Val and Bob I will talk to our cousins - we are 8 total. youngest is 3 years old. but she would walk or we could take turns carrying her.

My grandson, Ryan that is taking me on this cruise just got a dog in March. He was born December 23 and he is huge. Right now he weighs about 81 pounds. Buddy is the sweetest dog you would ever want to meet and Ryan has worked with him and trained him to be so obedient. He sits on comand and when Ryan says "hit the deck" he is flat on the floor. When he had Buddy at my dd house Ryan said "I get so mad when he doesn't listen!" My dd just looked at Ryan and said, "yea, I used to get kind of mad when you didn't listen too!" I don't think Ryan thought it was too funny at the time. My dh always said dogs are just like your kids, they are what you raise them to be.

Jasmine is a certified service dog so she could actually go on the cruise. I think I will pass on that one.:cloud9:

Harole Ann what breed is Jasmine, she looks like a bichon? If you brought her on the cruise I know that she would have a room at our place as my wife pines for our dog the entire time we are gone.

Hope you can join us, I really think it will be a great tour. If you or your cousins have any questions I can pass on to Alvaro let me know. val

I wish ... it's a total repluming job .. he's on day two and not even half way there ... but the house is a huge mess! :sad1:

How awful! I hope they get you repaired quickly.

My parents had a really smart but really naughty german shephard. Ryan loved Sees Candy, but only the chocolate covered creams (we know chocolate is bad for dogs but he didn't). It didn't matter where you hid the box he would find it. Val

Val, I think your parents dog and my parents dog must have been related in some weird way. Their border collie/brittany spaniel could hunt out Sees candy too. One X-mas my mom purchased about 15 boxes for my dad to give to his employees and the dog got into them all.

Val, you really are a stud!! Thanks so much for checking on this...I'm so tempted to change my plans.

Hmmm...decisions, decisions!

I'm in the same boat. We scheduled for the Monteverde 'Trainforest', but after reading Val's tour I'm tempted to switch. Hmmm...decisions, decisions!

I was totally disappointed with the Disney announcement today. There is nothing there that thrills me. After doing the PC in 08 and BTB TA and Med a three or four day cruise does not excite me. I am hoping they announce something soon concerning the rest of the months.

Sak0526: to answer your question about what day for brunch, I think I am just going to make a request for any brunch to optimize chances of getting at least one

Pixie Dust II: as was stated above, if you already have a personal reservation and DCL confirms our group reservation, you will be required to give up your personal reservation

Just in case anyone was confused about this like me the rules on the website are "Each Guest may dine at Palo only once per cruise for each meal — Dinner, Brunch and High Tea."

So if you have a res for dinner and you participate in the group brunch, then you will not lose your dinner reservation.

Was the dog ok? That must have cost them a mint.

PUNTARENAS, COSTA RICA TOURS
I have looked forward to exploring the flora and fauna of the rainforests of Costa Rica for years (with a little shopping thrown in as well). While Bob’s choice is always a marine excursion, we both enjoy experiencing the true culture and history of a place only found when we meet and speak with locals. The DCL-offered excursions for Costa Rica just didn’t meet all of our desires – and we have found that offerings that require an official company cheerleader to count noses in a public room before being marched across the gangway to an enormous bus don’t give us the experience we get from smaller private tours. We also think it is fun to go with a DISboard group we have been planning our trip with and have gotten to know. So I searched for a tour company that might meet all these wishes and found Odyssey Tours. http://www.odysseytourscr.com

The Odyssey Tours and the Ramirez brothers, Alvaro and Diego, received the highest rating, 5 stars, on TripAdvisor with 59 reviews, http://www.tripadvisor.com/Attracti..._Tours-Puntarenas_Province_of_Puntarenas.html . Their experience not only qualifies them to package great group tours, it gives them the flexibility to create a small tour just for Wonder Dis’ers. When we wrote to Alvaro of Odyssey Tours and explained our needs, he suggested a private tour, which would give us both what we were looking for. That’s what Alvaro has put together for us – provided eight or more Castaways join us. Here is a possible schedule for our day.

7:30 a.m. pick up time (when ship is scheduled to dock)
Pick up and drop off is outside the dock; a free shuttle runs all day from gate to ship.

What helped convince us this was the company to trust with our only day in Costa Rica was their quick response to our many e-mails asking about features and services. When Valerie wrote that we really don’t like being squeezed into a van to fill every seat belt, Alvaro pointed out that the several types of vans and the small Toyota bus they operate are chosen so they are almost never over about 60 percent capacity. The Odyssey fleet are Toyota Hiace 2008, full insured vans, with A/C, that hold 15 passengers with very good seats and plenty of room but to warrant the best comfort they like to have no more than 8 people on this kind of vehicle. If we have 10 or more people they will provide a 25 seat bus. Wow! If 13-18 of us get together, they’ll book us on the 28-passenger Toyota Coaster. Cold beverages will be provided while on the trip.

Stops for bathrooms and some sightseeing on the way.
Riding in the air-conditioned large van or small bus, on the way to Costa Rica’s most popular national park, Manuel Antonio, our guide will give us a narrative of the geologic features, national history, local botany, as well as exotic tropical birds, monkeys and sloths. He will answer our questions about Costa Rica in general and also about the towns and sights we will pass. Some of the spots we can expect to see are: Jaco beach, different plantations, crocodiles in the river of Tarcoles, Hermosa beach, scarlet macaws nesting area near Carara national park, the colonial village of Villa Lapas and others. While we will stop if a bathroom break is needed, as our primary interest is visiting the National Park, we plan to drive directly to the park. If time permits and we want to stop for pictures and sightseeing on the way home, this we can do. Remember, this is our private tour and our input into the day will be taken whenever it can be.

9:50 a.m. Hiking into rain forest national park of Manuel Antonio with a nature guide who will provide books, binoculars and a spotting scope we can share during our tour (Entry fees are included in our tour price.) http://www.costarica-nationalparks.com/manuelantonionationalpark.html

Manuel Antonio National Park is a forest, thick with massive ficus and two- and three-toed sloths,

green and black iguanas, agoutis, four species of monkey (including the highly endangered squirrel monkey, known locally as the mono titi), raccoons, deer, lizards, crocodiles and nearly 200 species of birds, including 2 species of toucans. It's one of Costa Rica's most-visited attractions and not to be missed. Rangers limit the number of guests allowed in at a time to help ensure a good experience for visitors and the park. You will see great wildlife that can be easily spotted from well-marked trails -- a luxury you won't find in the Amazon. And because animals are so used to humans, this is one of the best places to see them up close.
04.jpg

10:50 a.m. Enjoying the beach.
After hiking through the forest we will have about an hour to relax and enjoy the beautiful Manuel Antonio beach. We’ve read that it’s equally good for snorkeling, swimming and just laying on the beach. There we will find new clean restrooms, complete with both inside and outside showers to wash the saltwater off and change.

The beach is good for the usual beachy activities; bring a towel, hat, sunscreen, even snorkel gear. Air temperature is usually around 85F, and water at about 80F (the Goofy pool is usually between 82 and 84). They also suggest a raincoat or poncho and, of course, good walking shoes. Beverages are available in the van and on the beach.
Index-Picture-01.jpg

12:00 p.m. Hiking out the park for lunch

12:30 p.m. Lunch time.

The tour includes a lunch stop (cost included in the tour fee) at a quality restaurant where we can choose among traditional Costa Rican favorites such as rice, beans, green salad, plantains with fish, chicken or beef, or maybe you’d prefer rice with chicken or shrimp and a salad and French fries. If you would prefer more familiar foods, burgers and fries or sandwiches are available.

1:30 p.m. driving back to Puntarenas.

Stops for bathrooms, souvenirs, grocery store to purchase coffee, and sightseeing on the way.

On the way back to the ship we will have an opportunity to stop at a number of photo opportunities and souvenir shopping spots. These might include Villa Lupas and Santa Lucia, an eco-friendly resort within a tranquil rain-forest preserve for nature lovers. You can cross a suspension bridge to reach a small replica of a Costa Rican colonial village with a restaurant, cantina, church, and gift shops. http://www.villalapas.com/index.html

People have mentioned they like to buy postcards and mail them from the country they are in in order to get the postmark and stamps from the country visited. Alvaro assures us they can make this possible by stopping at places we can purchase them and seeing we have a way to mail them from Costa Rica. So bring your address list and a pen.

5:00 p.m. drop off in Puntarenas back at the dock and shuttle to the ship.

6:30 p.m. Wonder departs.

The cost of this full-day tour, with park entry fee and lunch included is $85 per person plus tip. Children under 8 years old receive 15% off, under age 3 are free.

No deposit, credit card info or prepay is requested; payment is at the end of the tour in cash. Prepayments can be made and Odyssey Tours hopes to have the ability to pay by credit card available by January.

PM me if you would like additional information or sign up to be part of this exciting day.

Val, your tour sounds AMAZING. I am definitely intrigued but my only concern is about getting back to Puntarenas so late in the day, only about an hour before we leave, on a non-DCL excursion. I found a lot of interesting tours on my own research too (though none as awesome as yours!) but they all got back so late, and I was worried about what if something went wrong and we got left behind. I was just curious, what is your opinion on this? Are you just trusting in the tour operator and going with it, hoping for the best? Like I said, I really want to do this tour you researched but I do have that concern about returning on time in the back of my head...

Hi everyone! Just checking in!

Things have been so busy here and are somewhat slowing down now.

My birthday was last Sat and my husbands was this past Friday. This past Saturday we had my husband's promotion party. His other promotions he has been overseas so it was great to celebrate with him! I am excited for the cruise and getting new pictures in his uniform reflecting his new rank!!! :cool1:

I am not sure if I have missed any questions about BUNCO or graphics or anything. If there is anything that I missed please let me know. I have gone back and looked through the pages but I know I have not done a very good job.

I hope all is well with everyone!

Nicole. It is legitimate concern and to be totally honest, my sister who is a TA has the same issue.

Here are my thoughts. If DCL changes the arrival time or departure time that would just make this trip impossible, we can cancel with no penalty. Here is the questions I posed when I first contacted them and Alvaro's response.

Question: Individual cancellation policy? Time frame, amount, reasons?
Response: Since the reservation is made with no prepay there is no cancellation policy. We'll appreciate an email from you days before the tour to let us know you are not going on the tour so we can program our day.

Question: Cancellation policy due to cancellation of entire trip due to your decision or a Disney's schedule change?
Response: Since the reservation is made with no prepay there is no cancellation policy. We'll appreciate an email from you days before the tour to let us know you are not going on the tour so we can program our day.

The other issue is getting back late. I planned for us to be back 1.5 hours before the ship is scheduled to leave. However, it is our tour, if we find we are running behind we can instruct them to go straight back with no stops. Another option would be to ask for a reschedule now.

However, I am going to send Alvaro your questions/concerns and see what he responds. I'll also ask about delays due to problems with the vans or bus and traffic problems. Let's see what he says.

I was confused about this too and was worried the group bunch would cancel my dinner reservation. I happy to hear that's not the case.

The dog was fine as he ate so much so fast he tossed it all right back up. Gross, but effective.

Hopefully we'll make up our mind soon on which excursion we want to do.

Doug & I are quite interested in this, too. I have the same concern as Nicole (WDW Princess 71) - getting back to the ship in time. I have nightmares about "missing the boat!":rotfl2:

Thanks for checking into all of this for us!

I was totally disappointed with the Disney announcement today. There is nothing there that thrills me. After doing the PC in 08 and BTB TA and Med a three or four day cruise does not excite me. I am hoping they announce something soon concerning the rest of the months.

That's the thing - I think everyone is waiting for the "big" announcement - specifically, where will the Magic and Wonder be summer 2012? I know that's what interests me most.

Of course, I'm not at all disappointed that they didn't announce it yet. I think the perfect time to announce that would be in January. Well actually, the perfect time for them to open booking on those cruises will be in January - say, between Januray 7th and 20th... Yes, that would be the perfect time to open bookings on summer 2012.... :rolleyes1

There was one at the dog park who would chase the whippet (that in itself was worth the price of admission) and he would make the most horrible sound I have ever heard come out of any animal. You'd think someone was killing it, but no, he was just upset that he couldn't catch the whippet (and seriously, who CAN catch one when they are moving at full speed?).

Yip, I know the noise, like a mix between throttle and scream.

Thanks for all the doggy stories.
They made me smile after a real real rubbish night at work, horrible drive home and now they seem to be building an awfull house next doors garden, digger in the garden, its not good:sad2:

Good Morning, Happy Cruisers!

It's a chilly 32 degrees in upstate NY this am.

DH has Finally started to get rid of his cold, but now, he's apparently given it to me:headache:

Jasmine is a certified service dog so she could actually go on the cruise. I think I will pass on that one.:cloud9:

Oh, Please DO pass on that one! Cruising is one of the few "safe" zones for those of us with allergies.

Valbob, that excursion DOES look amazing. I've signed up for the train boat tour, though and I  trains! so, I'll pass the opportunity.

Happy day, all!

There was a service dog on the ta, I felt so bad for it, It was black and it was so so so hot during the day outside and it was panting the whole time, not really sure what kind of service dog it was, just walked around with the owner.
Hope your cold doesnt kick in Linda.

Good morning! No frost at my house but I did see 'white' on my way into work this morning.

Lynne - sorry about the construction noise, hope you can get/got some rest before having to head back into work.

Linda - stay well! No repeat of last year.

Brooklyn- congrats to your husband on his promotion. If I can help with Bunco let me know.I think Sandy signed up for it too. Let me know if anything came about for the sweatshirts.

We will be at DW on DEC 9,10 and the 14- I guess you will be there after that

I know it is a legitimate concern.

Right now, our schedule is we start back to the ship from the forest, beach and lunch at about 1:30. It is about a 2 hour trip back to the ship. However, we were planning to take our time, stopping for photos, and shopping/sightseeing at Santa Lucia. So we have built in 4.5 hours to get back in time. If the group thinks it is cutting it to close, we can go straight back.

We have taken private DISboard organized tours on a number of cruises and never had a problem. Also, we have hired the taxi guys you meet outside of the ship pier and had some of our best tours. That said, I always bring the 800 number DCL provided for "if you are delayed on the way to the ship" in their welcome book.

Have any of you known or heard of someone missing the ship or having to call the ship because they were stuck? I guess I have also thought that the private tours I have been on have gone to major tourist places, like we would be and if we experience a major delay others will too, including a DCL tour.

I am written to Alvaro to see what his experience has been as he is doing this everyday.

Val
