Hi all,

Back after our first summer trip. Usually we go in winter, so there were many contrasts for us.

Lows first:

Heat
It wasn't ridiculously hot (25 to 27 most day) but crowd dodging in heat is not the first thing that comes to mind when fantasising about the ideal holiday - especially when you're used to Irish weather.

Crowds
We've been in the Xmas session and it has been pretty busy at times, but there were times this week that I found it hard to look around and enjoy the location because it was wall to wall people who all seem to think everyone else should avoid them.

Queues
We got very few rides done each day as fast passes were giving out return times hours away which mean we couldn't get any more for a long time. The non-fastpass rides had long queues (as usual) but in the past we just avoided these rides. For example, Dumbo was a queue of 60 minutes so each of us played pass the parcel with sleeping toddlers, their heavy hot little bodies giving us backache and a bit more heat to contend with. Not fun.

Buses
The number 50 that serves the Adagio and Elysee was a big pink sardine can. The first bus was at 8.45 which was useless for anyone with Dream Passes who wanted to avail of EMH.

Staff
Staff who were just rude - for example, when we produced an AP when paying at Annette's the waiter said "Too late" and flatly refused to apply it for discount.

Scrums
The usual complaints really - adults who should know better who practically trampled toddlers to get to characters.

Scary characters at Cafe Mickey
I know most people expect to see some of the 'scarier' characters and a lot of children are quite blase about them, but quite a few small children (including ours) were really upset by the none cute characters. Not sure how they could do it, but it would be great if they could operate some kind of method of obscuring the scary ones from the littlest ones. Or maybe have them come out at a later hour or something.

Okay, that all sounds quite bad, but we had a brilliant time overall.

Highs

Weather
Perversely I have to say the weather was also a high, because when we weren't hacking our way through the people we were able to enjoy real summer weather.

Disney Dance Express
This went down well with all of us - lively, interactive, really Disney even though it used non Disney music.

Tarzan
Amazing acrobatics skill and very entertaining.

People who were having fun
One of the great things about Disney is that grownups and children aren't embarrassed to express their enjoyment of where they are. Watching people dancing, singing, smiling, and sharing their excitement is always a high in Disneyland for me.

Thrill rides
Sharing my nephew's exuberance after his first trip on SM, and conquering his trepidation of RnRC and ToT was a blast.

Staff
Being amazed at the language skills and patience of till operators who have to contend with several languages in succession from people who rarely have a clue what they want before they get to the till. Chatting with CMs, expecially in the AP Office and in shops, who remain friendly and enthusiastic despite the lack of grace they receive from a large proportion of their customers.

Nieces
Seeing the progression in my three year nieces as they learned what Disney is all about. From their first ride on IASM where they flatly refused to leave the boat as they loved it so much, to watching them line up patiently to meet Minnie and Aurora and moving on for the next child, despite desperately wanting to just stay there. Seeing (and feeling) their responses to parades and street shows as they danced and clapped on our shoulders.

Adagio
As others have said before, these apartments have definitely seen their fair share of wear and tear, and I won't lie, I hate having to make my own bed when on holiday. However, for the price you get a lot. The rooms are compact but there's plenty of storage space and reasonable kitchen facilities. The only thing I would have liked to have had is a toaster or grill (there's a microwave and a four ring hob). The shopping and restaurant facilities are so handy, whether for self catering or (as we did) for lunches and dinners. I highly recommend the bistro on the diagonal corner. We went there on our last night, there was a brilliant guitarist playing which gave the place a lot of atmosphere.

I could go on, but if you're still reading by now I think you need a break.

I don't think I would ever go back in high summer, but I'm glad we experienced it. Lessons learned: in winter we basically did what we wanted when we wanted. In summer we found the queues and heat didn't really allow for that. Picking a few rides either for their short queues or FPs and then interspersing those with different shows each day allowed us to cover almost everything we wanted to do. Taking some time out to watch the world go by, and allowing twice as much time as you think you need to get from A to B helps the blood pressure and always expect at least half an hour for counter service meals (now I know why they don't call them fast food).

To anyone about to set off soon have a great time.....

Good opinions and I can relate to much of what you say having recently returned too.

To be honest I prefer to go when the weather is warm, it just wouldn't be the same for me walking around in winter clothing, that largely comes from several Florida holidays though.

I didn't particularly enjoy the crowds this August, however we found the weather more suitable for staying longer at the parks than we would be able to manage at WDW.

June seems a reasonable option for us, still warm, cheaper hotel prices and not the high crowds.

We also found most CMs, shop assistants, hotel staff really helpful and friendly though did witness some of the "scums" you refer to, they just don't seem to think of respecting other people sometimes.

Glad it was good overall, it's interesting for me as we're considering a summer trip next year. I would be fuming with Annettes over the AP discount, I always use the shareholders card where possible :sad2:

The dance express looks just up my dd's street, welcome home :goodvibes

I'm afraid I'd have been insisting on calling the manager over in Annettes if I'd encountered a waiter like yours. Once in Cafe Mickey I was given the bill without asking for it (I'm guessing as it was busy the waiter wanted our table ;)) but I had to get him to take it away again when I produced my shareholders card - his fault, and if there had been any further issue about it I would have been talking to his manager.

I'm glad though, with a bit of planning, you managed everything you wanted to do.
Its funny what you end up doing just to be in Disney though - we really did have to plan loads over our last trip because we were there over a whole weekend, and although the kids enjoyed it (because I planned well) I really didn't enjoy having to structure our days so much. This next trip, guess when we're going to maximise our trip? Yep, Saturday morning arrival, and a press event weekend - I must be mad :rotfl2::rotfl2:!!

Hi, glad you had a great trip overall. I think we must have been there at the same time and we didn't find the crowds too bad compared to what we are used to. I was expecting it to be far worse. You can usually get another fastpass two hours after you got the last one even if the your time slot hasn't opened yet so that might help you if you went back again when it was busy.

We stayed at the Residhome apartments and we also had only a hob and a microwave, we thought it would have been great to have a toaster and would have liked the microwave to be a combi so we had an oven.

It's a shame Disney don't have any DVC properties with cooking facilities as I think that would be a great option to have.

Theres Davy Crocket Ranch (not DVC) which has facilities to cook but its ruled out by a lot of people as you need a car as theres no transport to the parks from there

ah yes DCR not DVC. :)

We are one's that ruled that out too.

Welcome back Lucy. :goodvibes

Marriotts is a good option if you want your own space with cooking facilities - although it's a timeshare you can rent accommodation (houses) there directly from their website. Unlike Davy Crockett Ranch it's also easy to get to the parks if you don't have your own transport - they have a shuttle that runs a few times a day or else a local bus (#34 I think) goes past the end of the road.

Sorry for being so slow to thank you all for reading. Life is a little hectic at the moment.

I guess most of us shape an expectation from our first visit and everything gets compared to that, whether good or bad. The age range of the group is a big factor too. Like you I love the ambiance of warm weather trips, just don't like sharing with too many others. :) You're right, longer warmer days are great for longer trips at a more relaxed pace - I guess I was trying to pack in too much in too little time.

It's pretty irritating when staff attitudes burst the Disney bubble, and sometimes I get up on my high horse and sock it to them, sometimes though I just don't want to add to the bad vibe and go all (what's the Disney equivalent to Pollyanna?) Funny enough, in Cafe Mickey the waitress brought us the bill before we asked for it but was more than happy to adjust it when I produced my card. I guess you just get bad staff everywhere.

I'm glad though, with a bit of planning, you managed everything you wanted to do.

Being the organizer you so want everyone to love it as much as you so you go all out to make sure that they benefit as much as possible. I don't think my nerves could take a weekend trip, a press event weekend sounds like Disney masocism to me - yes, you're right, you are mad :scared1: - but I'm sure you'll still have a great time.

Dance Express was so much fun for kids, especially the joining in kind of kids.

We were there 15th-19th, hope we didn't mow you down on our fastpass treasure hunt. :goodvibes It's all relative I suppose - if we hadn't had small kids with us it would have been easier to play the fastpass game. We were trying to schedule FPs for different rides for different people in the same part of the park for around the same time so we didn't have to split up too much. Tricky business, especially with return times being four hours away in some cases.

We stayed at the Residhome apartments and we also had only a hob and a microwave, we thought it would have been great to have a toaster and would have liked the microwave to be a combi so we had an oven.

All good suggestions, although we were actually pretty happy with the Adagio for it's location beside Val d'Europe and having the free buses. There must be a market for a travel toaster - should I patent it? To be honest, self catering is something I avoid if at all possible. If not for the toddlers, that kitchen would have remained pristine :lmao:.

Off to start planning for the next one - sans kids, but with many cocktails. Always look on the bright side....
