Yes, you would have to go through bag check/security if you go through the Esplanade. You could walk all the way around the property, but my guess is that you won't save yourself all that much time because to go down to Katella and then get to the PPH almost doubles the walking distance. I would probably just deal with security and save my feet the extra distance.

Yes, you will need to go through bag check to cross the esplanade. It is usually quick and painless.
