From AKL -> DTD -> OKW? Opinions?

I'm trying to figure out how this will work and wondered what any of you "in the know" about Disney transportation would say. If it is not economical for us by August, we may not rent a car for our stay at OKW. I have an 8:30 pm ADR for Boma on a Sunday night in which AK closes at 6:00 pm (long story short, we *must* make our ADR for 8:30 or later or we don't get DH's discount...we thought we'd explore the resort for awhile before dinner). So, anyway, I understand that AKL is waaaay over there and a pain in the neck as far as getting back to OKW. I was thinking, though, (dangerous, I know) that after dinner, we could take the bus to DTD and then catch the ferry back to OKW. Would this take outrageously long and make the whole endeavor not even worth doing? Or does this sound like something that would work out ok? Would a cab cost us a ton for that return trip? I'm new to WDW, so haven't a clue whether this is unreasonable thinking or not.

Using WDW transportation, the bus to DTD is the only option. From there, you will probably need to take the bus to OKW. The boats will probably stop running by the time you get to DTD. The trip will probably take over an hour factoring waiting for the busses.

A taxi will cost approx $20 and take 15 minutes if one is waiting at AKL.

I saw your "DL Veteran, WDW virgin" tag. I am just the opposite. I just got back from DL (stayed offsite). Haven't been there since 1997 (before DCA). And I have a question.

Back then, there was monorail and tram transportation between DL and the DLH. From what I can tell, now there isn't any transportation at all between any of the DLR hotels and the parks. The monorail now only goes as far a DTD. Is that correct?

Thanks for your reply, Ed. Hopefully, car rental rates will go down or we'll get a better deal than they're quoting right now so we can justify the cost of having a car on hand. Then we won't have this issue!

Yeah, the monorail situation at DL is lame right now. It runs "one way" from Tomorrowland to the DTD station. I believe you can get off and back on to ride it the other "one way" from DTD through DCA to Tomorrowland. The train doesn't circle the park as normal, but rather uses an abbreviated route (no going around the Matterhorn, etc.). Some days it doesn't even do all of that. No stops at DLH at all. They're doing some building (the Finding Nemo ride that will open next year) and so I guess that's the reason for the "one way" thing. I believe that in Sept 2006 they are going to shut monorail down completely for refurbishment (new improved monorails, I hear! yay!) It's supposed to be up and running again around the opening of the Nemo ride (approx May 2007). Hope that answers your question - it's to the best of my knowledge, so someone may correct me.
