Friendship Bread?

My stepmother gave me some. Everyone her age rolled their eyes. Someone please tell me what Friendship bread is all about?

you make a batch and give half of it to a friend so they can make a batch and give half to thier friend and it goes on and on. My mom made it when we were little. It is pretty good. She made an extra batch for herself so she can continue to make it. I am not sure if you are talking about the same bread or not, but this is what we called freiendship bread when I was little. I don't know why anyone rolled thier eyes unless they assumed you weren't going to follow through with it or they thaught they should have gotten it.

Ok, now I get it. I think everyone rolled their eyes because they saw it as a culinary chain letter. But they dutifully took the bread.

I heard about that a long time ago, but never participated in one. Sure is a nice idea. Didn't realize woman still did that.

I "grew" a batch of that back in the late 80's. I didn't know people were still doing it either.

I think she meant they rolled their eyes because they didn't want it! It's kind of like a chain letter in that you feel guilt if you don't keep it going. I remember liking the bread, but I have to admit I might not want the responsibility now if it was given to me on a busy week! It's a sourdough that you have to "feed" for a few days.

Friendship bread is really good. I use egg substitute and replace the oil with applesauce. Sometimes I will only replace 1/2 the oil though. I also add chocolate chips to mine sometimes. Although, it's really more like cake then. But, who cares?! Yummy!

I misunderstood and thaught that she was the only one who got it. I was thinking maybe one of them gave it to the step mother and the step mother didn't keep it within the circle of friends which of course wouldn't give them a reason to be mad.

About 10 years ago a friend gave me the starter. I made the bread and it was pretty good. Very dense, heavy and full of fruit. We had company so I served it and covered it then put it on the counter. We then went outside for a bit.

When we came in I found that my old golden Max ate the entire rest of the cake. At least 2/3 of the cake. I called the emergency vet and they kind of laughed and informed me that Max would be OK but would have a very upset tummy. Let's just say that Max was VERY regular for the next few days. It was the only time in his 12 years that he spent the night on the porch. I haven't made one since.

I think they rolled their eyes thinking been there, done that. I was given it a couple of times and the first time it was kinda fun for a few days, then it just becomes something eles to deal with. After that I would just smile and say thank-you and then toss it when I got home. If I had time to deal with it, I may do it again sometime, but now at this time in my life.

I just want to make sure there isn't any bad luck attached to it if I don't have time to make it and it accidentally goes bad or falls in the garbage.

I have made it for years. I really think its the best bread/cake ever. I never put fruit in it though. I use different flavored pudding mixes to make the cake different. Banana is the BEST.

I keep a starter in my freezer....just in case I want to make a round.

That's a good idea. I'm going to do that next time. Last time I had it I made my own starter and I failed the first time. The second time was fine though. It would be a lot easier to just freeze one.

Castleview, don't worry there's no bad luck associated with it. Really, I'm not sure why anyone would be grumbling about it. It's really good if you want to take the time to make it. But, nothing's going to be "ruined" if you don't. Just toss the starter if you don't want to do it.

Funny you bring this up. I was telling DH a few days ago that I really miss that great bread we used to have that was from a starter. I had to go out of town for a few weeks and couldn't keep up with the stuff and it all got tossed. Would LOVE to have some now! So, who's dropping a batch by the house???
