Friendly WDW resort guests vs DL

Is it just me or are people really nice and friendly at the WDW resorts and parks? I love to stay on property partly because there are so many other pleasant guests. Everyone is on vacation, lounging around a beautiful hotel, and just so nice. I really don't run into rude resort guests very often. When we visited DL, it felt very much like a commuter park and we ran into lots of rather unpleasant teenagers on high school/ junior high school day trips (I remember the comment, "If I see one more person w/ a stroller!!"). At WDW you find lots of families going "Vacation!!!!" without the it's-all-about-me attitude (overall, IMHO).
I just love it. Just wondered what other's thought.

BTW, I've never stayed off property but I've talked to plenty of nice on-site resort guests, especially in those hot tubs!

I reside very close to DL, and frequent the parks, resorts and DTD area on a regular basis. We are PAP to both DL, and WDW. I have never noticed any difference in the attitudes of people visiting DL vs. WDW. :confused3 Everyone I seem to come across, is having the "time of their lives" :goodvibes in the happiest place on earth! :wizard:

Therefore, I truly believe the people visiting both of these "worlds" are a mixed bunch, representing a genuine microcosm of the world at large. ;)

I had to laugh when I read this. My daughter is working at Epcot right now on the college program and we were just talking about this very subject this morning. She has a great job and does see mostly happy guests.
BUT.....
One of her roommates is working front desk at the WL and another works in food service and they see plenty of rude, unpleasant guests. So, from the CM's point of view not everyone is nice and friendly!
:(

This is one of my husband's chief complaints about DL... that it's like the local 6 Flags with a whole different feel than WDW. I personally don't remember since the last time I went to DL was before I had kids.

Been to DL twice in the last three years and thought the overall feel there was friendlier...I recall bumping into a couple of people and they actually said 'excuse me' before I did. At WDW I rarely find anyone taking the time for niceities, and I think it's getting noticibly worse.

One reason I think this is, is that WDW is full of Park COMMANDO's...People rushing to do as much as possible. DL does not have this mentality at all, IMO.

Now that we have moved to California this year, we are getting the DL premium annual passes in the summertime, so I will get a lot more chances to see if our couple of trips in the last couple years were anomalies (maybe we happened to go during days when lots of groups were there for the day) or if our new experiences are among friendler resort goers. Before this we lived in the midwest and had WDW APs and always ran into so many friendly people. I loved sitting around the England area of Epcot waiting for the Illuminations show and meeting so many nice guests as well as in the resort hot tubs :)

We have DL annual passes and visit at least once a month. I would have to say that it is about the same. I come across some very rude, and some very nice people. One thing I do agree with is that it is a commuter park. Many locals go there for the day.

We were at DL at Christmastime and WDW last September, and I DID notice a difference in the guests. I thought the guests at WDW were much friendlier, and I agree it's probably because DL is more of a commuter park. Also, I think DL gets more crowded because it is smaller, and the crowds tend to "bottle neck" in many places, which I think probably causes everyone to become more agitated. I love both parks, and it wasn't enough of a problem to deter me from going to DL in the future. There are still plenty of friendly guests at both places just happy to be in "The Magic." :wizard:

ITA!!! I don't like the "feeling" I get at DL. I'm not sure if it is because the park is smaller, and seems more claustrophobic...or, if it is all the locals, or what? I got flamed on a thread a while back for posting this opinion ("locals" who own DL passes were unhappy at my opinion of them), but it is still my opinion. I saw MANY teenagers getting off of city busses and going into DL completely unattended. This makes a huge difference. They are not on vacation with their family....they are "hanging out" with their friends, much like teenagers hang out at the malls. They do behave differently in the parks.

When I was riding Small World, to pre-teen boys were shooting "spit-wads" at the dolls. They boarded the ride with whole pockets full of paper covered straws to do this. Now, their parents were with them, but didn't notice. The boys seemed to have a whole "system" of what dolls were easy to get, and what were the real "winners". I couldn't take it...I HAD to say something to them...my dd was 2, and that was her favorite ride!!!!

But, that was how they found their "fun"...defacing the ride. Those are boys that come far too frequently, and feel like the park is "theirs" to do as they wish. That is the attitude I have run into at DL. I have had (many times) parents tell their children to "walk around and go sit in front of that lady" as a parade is starting....after we have been waiting for an hour. I have even had them try to sit in front of my dd...she is tiny!!!

Maybe I have been lucky, but I have NEVER had that happen at WDW. People are on "vacation"...not, spending a day at the park. They are at WDW to enjoy themselves, not "work the system".

It just seems like a "world" of difference to me.

Wow, this is EXACTLY what I would expect to hear after our two visits to DL in 2003-2004. Given, I LOVE the place (obviously, we are getting the PAP this year) so it doesn't deter me from going, but I saw lots of groups of teenagers smoking, not happy about being around families, and plenty of PDA demonstrating young twosomes!! :rotfl:
I was thinking maybe we'd just gone during times when there were lots of school trips going on, but it seemed like there were way more people on day trips for something to do rather than families who'd splurged on once a year trips that they were really excited about.
I'll have to see when we start going a lot how it seems.
We've tried DL hotel (disappointed) and GC so far (LOVED it). I want to check out Paradise Pier and try Grand Californian several (hundred) more times :cloud9:

That's funny that you mention that because I though the exact opposite. I've been going to Disneyland for years and have always thought people at DL were so friendly and always said excuse me, hello, etc. But when I went to WDW I felt people weren't as friendly and no one really ever said excuse me.
I think it's just because of what park you're used to. I've been to Disneyland a lot so I'm used to that park and the people. People in Disneyland are just very laid back, have gone there so many times, or are locals. There are a lot of teens who come after school and with WDW there isn't.
If you're used to going to WDW, the people in Disneyland would seem very different to you. People on the east coast seem very different to people on the west coast and vice versa.

I don't think one park has friendlier people, it's just what kind of people you are accustomed to. Or that you've encountered rude people on your vacation, so people would seem not as friendly.

Hello, Beca~Just an FYI...many of the local area RESORT hotel properties, which work in conjunction with DL (in providing guest accommodations), utilize a city bus/trolley system for transportation to/from the parks. Therefore, these groups of teens you witnessed getting off the city bus, could have merely been "teens" from an extended family traveling from another state to visit DL! Teens are permitted to "hang out" with friends and family, unattended/unsupervised at both WDW and DL. Haven't you come across these groups at WDW, the waterparks, or DTD in Orlando? Boy, we certainly have! Any young person, apart from the scrutiny and supervision of their parents or chaperones, will undoubtedly behave differently. ;)

I also would have said something to the parents of the boys shooting "spitwads" at the dolls inside the small world attraction at DL. Vandalism is NOT acceptable behavior, anywhere or at anytime. While in NYC, I witnessed a girl writing her name on the wall inside the Statue of Liberty. I immediately alerted authorities, and she was promptly arrested for vandalism/defacing public property. Perhaps she'll be less apt to pull out a sharpie and write on ANY wall again.

WDW also has MANY local AP holders, whom also frequent the parks on a daily, weekly, monthly, etc., basis. Some of these people also exhibit similar attitudes with regards to "their" parks. Since traveling/vacationing guests (from outside the area) are viewed on a seasonal basis by WDW & DL, they MUST attract locals to support the park/employees during the interim. These persons are constantly encouraged and welcomed to visit the parks through a host of promotions and special advertisements.

As for the parade scenario, it's just as bad (IMHO) at WDW. People begin to line-up hours in advance for a "good" spot, and encourage their children to sit and "hold" preferred spots. :confused3 I've personally witnessed this for years. Therefore, I rarely stand and view ANY parade while at either park. The attractions are usually less-congested during parade times, providing a perfect opportunity to experience E-rides with little/no wait time! :cool1:

Personally, we prefer the small size and quaint "feel" of DL over the MK park of WDW. Especially in the late spring, on a cool and misty day. :cloud9: I can almost SEE Walt walking up the nearly vacated main street at dusk, and still smile everytime I enter the park...and look at his beloved crow's nest view above the fire station. His kind & smiling face of approval, is nearly etched into the glass of the apartment's front window. :goodvibes DL IS and ALWAYS will be the original, and there is simply no arguing this fact. :wizard:

P.S. As MinnieM21 posted...Disneyland has a more "laidback" atmosphere over WDW. There have been MANY posts and threads with respect to this issue. I have always attributed it to the CALIFORNIA culture, which in general, is much more "laid-back" than the East Coast. We absolutely LOVE it, as we never see the hoards of familes *(12-20 or more) rushing "COMMANDO~STYLE" through the parks. It just isn't done here. This, in itself, makes the entire park experience much more enjoyable! :cloud9:

I saw a website of topless people going down the log ride at DL. Husbands and boyfriends were sometimes the culprit of it by pulling up a females shirt. I do not think this would ever happen at DW (but then we may never know)?

Would that make them friendlier?

I have seen the same thing at DL on IASW. The boys who were vandalizing the ride were throwing wadded up paper bags and food at the dolls. It was disgusting.

The gangs can also be a problem at DL. DL security began a crackdown several years ago after a shootout in the parking lot, but gang members still visit and their mere presence is a menace to the other guests.

Despite the occasional hoodlum, I still enjoy visiting DL. It is a wonderful place.

This is one big thing that we love about WDW every time we go. When we go there our spirits are always lifted by the nice an kind employees that we meet. I think that Disney does a really good job at training their employees this way. It's also the way Walt would have wanted it.

I remember our last trip my DW and DS5 were leisurely walking along the YC/BC toward Epcot enjoying the warm night (in June). I remember saying to her that I couldn't believe the amount of people that were in good moods and being really nice (not only the Disney staff but the other vacationers). It is and was addictive. That is definitely part of the Disney magic in our minds.

We live in California - have AP's and agree that DL is just not as friendly or nice as WDW. But I feel it has to do with the small size of the parks and the vast number of people visiting at all times. I must admit we've been disappointed in our last few visits. We don't even bother going to the Magic Kingdom anymore if it's a Friday or Saturday as it's way too congested. There just seems to be more magic at WDW. They have tried to make it better with Downtown Disney and the beautiful Grand Californian hotel. But it is situated in a city atmosphere and cannot possibly compare to the sprawling resort settings of Orlando. As long as you are aware of this going in, you can still have a wonderful time - just try to avoid weekends if possible for a much nicer experience.

My beef is the horrid hotel offerings around the area. I know it's a city, but it would be great if they could bulldoze and rebuild the area to be much more resort like. (I know this is not feasible of course). But there is no charm once you leave the DTD area and it's just plain icky! I cannot stand Paradise Pier and the Disneyland Hotel - they feel dirty and outdated in my opinion. We stayed at the Disneyland Hotel a couple of years ago and it was gross! The pool areas were filthy with garbage cans overflowing all over the ground, the hot-tub full of brown topped foam and way too many kids in the pool - they just don't have the ability to accept the capacity of visitors that stay in the area. Plus to pay the kind of money they want for what you get is just plain ridiculous compared to WDW. Now the Grand Californian is lovely, but again way overpriced for what you get. This leaves budget type hotel offerings outside the resort and they are basically old seedy type hotels given cursory face-lifts. They do have a Hyatt, but again, nothing to write home about. Everything is a 2 star or less, (they say 3 star, but trust me 2 star at best) - so don't think you'll find a wonderful resort type place to stay, as this is not what it's like at all. If you keep your expectations low on your accommodations, you will be OK. This is where WDW just blows away LA. At least for us, as our resort is as much of a destination as the parks. This is NOT the case at Disneyland - just be aware. (The Grand Californian is of course the exception to this rule, but again, does not really offer that much for what you pay to stay there).

Unfortunately LA is way over-priced and crowded - that's the reality of it - so when you visit DL and Cali Adventure - be aware it is not the same experience as going to WDW, but still has wonderful things to offer. But if given the choice - I would pick WDW - hands down - so much nicer!!!!

brando5111...ITA!!!!

The only place I would differ with you is the Hyatt....we found that hotel disgusting!! Of course, we had stayed there via Hotwire, and from what I have since learned....the Hyatt has "Priceline rooms" which are really gross!!! I also didn't like having to pay extra for parking. We had stayed at some "suite" hotel right next to the Hyatt the year before. I don't remember what it was called, but it was VERY nice. It had free parking, and included a free breakfast buffet which had SOOO much, including a "made to order omlette bar"...I would LOVE to stay at that hotel. I think I have learned that for the DL area, Hotwire contracts with much nicer hotels than Priceline. I will NEVER do priceline again in DL.

It's so weird, in WDW I am a "Disney Hotel snob"...I will NEVER stay off property. But, in DL I RARELY ever stay on property. It just doesn't seem worth it to me. There is a huge difference in what the "resorts" have to offer....and for me, it is just not enough to justify the price.

Well, I am maintaining an open mind since we've only been twice in the past two years, but as far as the cultural thing (and maybe this wasn't written to me, I don't know) but I was born and raised in California (born in Whittier, grew up in Santa Ana, San Gabriel and Diamond Bar) and have been to DL many, many more times than WDW (except not as an adult--I went to DL through my young adulthood and then didn't go for about 10 years until I returned w/ my ds). I have only been to WDW as an adult, however (albeit, several times now). We only lived in the midwest three years and then returned to Cali (this time northern). But anyway....I'm excited about our future trips and loved our stay at the GC. Maybe I will fall in love w/ DL again the way I did w/ WDW, who knows. :lovestruc

The whole thing cultural thing wasn't directed towards anyone, it was something in general that I thought might explain some things. I have no clue what I'm talking about, I was just trying to make sense of why people in Disneyland might not seem as friendly. I really have no idea why it seems like there are nicer people in one park and not as friendly people in another. I was just blabbin'. :teeth: I'm sorry if that came across the wrong way, I wasn't trying to sound mean at all. :flower:
