Hi!

Disney Reservations just told me that they will not charge me for a fridge because I need to keep gel ice packs available to insert into a walking cast/splint and to have larger ice packs to ice my feet at at night as well. However, the reservation CM told me that there is no freezer section - it is just an extra small fridge. Can anyone confirm that this is the case? I really do need them frozen. If I need to pay to rent one with a freezer, I will gladly do it but she made it sound like none of the fridges available at POP have freezers. Anyone know?

Thanks!

Keri

If they do have a freezer section, it'll be VERY small - about two by five, just big enough to put a couple of half-liter water bottles to freeze them.

But what you MIGHT be able to do is turn the thermostat up all the way and turn the whole refrigerator into a freezer. Also bring some storage containers and fill them with ice, put them in the as-cold-as-possible refrigerator and put your ice packs in/on them.

Of course, that's the only thing you'll be able to use the refrigerator for - it won't then keep most typical foods that need [just] refrigeration at usable temps.

You can also buy disposable cold packs that get cold with a twist and a shake. We keep these on hand for sports injuries.

If the refrigerator you get has a temperature setting, and I think the 4 cubic foot ones do, and you set it to maximum cold you will find that you actually have a freezer. Just don't put anything in it that should not be frozen, and you will find the cold packs do freeze.

Yep.. if you turn the fridge to max it will freeze... I found this out when my daughters insulin froze....
Also.. I know the front desk at POP took my freezer packs from me and froze them overnight so I could use them on the trip home. I have no idea where they froze them but I just had to take them down and then call about 10 minutes before I was picking them up.

I find when I go to any hotel where the refrigerator is not standard in the room and one is delivered I will make sure of the thermostat setting. There are some people who think that turning the thermostat to maximum cold will bring the temperature inside down faster than leaving it in the middle. This is not correct, and it will still cool at the same rate but will turn it into a freezer which is definitely bad for some medicines.

Yeah.. unfortunately it was a CM who turned it to max. The fridge was not there when we checked in so they sent it up while we went and ate at Everything Pop.. we came back and put the insulin in it and didnt even think... next morning we wake up and my friend says " hey my pop froze" WHAT??? I learned to always check the temp first thing after that. The CM of course had no idea it was for meds just that it should be there and cold.. so it was an unfortunate kinda expensive lesson....

The CM told you he/she turned it to maximum? Or was it just that way from the last person who used it?

Thanks all! I will plan on just keeping it set as cold as possible. I also like to keep a few water bottles frozen for rolling my feet on so that will be perfect. :goodvibes

I never saw the CM who brought it but the manager who I spoke with to try to get new insulin said the CM probably turned it up to get it cold fast in case you wanted to use it right away. I honestly dont know if this was the case or not.. didnt and doesnt really matter... my point in the post was to say that the fridges will freeze when turned to max and this is how I know.
I replaced my own insulin and didnt ask for anything from Disney other than help to find a pharmacy that had it ( Dd was on a pen so it had to be in the cartridge.. not just insulin) and could deliver it fast... which they gladly helped with.
