Ironically, I had a friend who collected many of the Marvel series so I recall the origins of Venom. I haven't read any of them in years, but I was at that time.

My daughter asked about the black suit when she saw a commercial and I started to explain and then said "We'll wait and see what they say about it in the movie"

Good thing you did. Without spoiling anything, I'll just say that they totally messed up that storyline. Only thing that was the same was the name of the last person to wear the Venom suit.
