Hello!I have a short three day stay planned at the BC at the end of this month. We are staying Club Level and I would like to bring some lunch items along ( lunchmeat, tuna, and yogurts). Things have been a little tight lately, so it looks as if we will be cutting out eating at Hurricane Hannas, Yachtsman Steakhouse and Beaches and Cream. Are you allowed to take the freezer packs (the hard sided ones) in your carryon? I was going to put a soft sided cooler in one of our carryons. Since it's such a short trip we won't be needing checked luggage. Sorry it's long winded, but hopefully some one will let me know if it's allowed. TIA

As Kaytieeldr noted, freezer packs are not allowed to keep food cold. They are allowed to keep medications cold, however. As an alternative to a freezer pack, you can freeze a bunch of grapes in a bag to keep your food cold and to snack on later or put in a bag of frozen vegetables, which may or may not be attractive for later snacking.

I've used frozen corn with great success. Also peas. I do like the frozen grapes though....you can munch on them as well!!!

Note that not only are the gel packs not allowed for the purpose of cooling food, but you also won't be allowed to take yoghurt through security in a carryon -- it counts as a gel. (You could buy it airside in the airport, but I woudn't imagine that's much of a money-saving tactic.)
The other foods you mentioned are fine, though.

If you plan on taking yogurt, it would need to be less than 3 ounces and be in your 3-1-1 bag, not in a cooler.

Yep - you won't be able to bring yogurt past security either unless it is in your baggie.

Thanks everyone on the suggestions. I didn't even think about the yogurt being considered a gel. I LOVE the tip of using frozen veggies or better yet frozen grapes. Thanks!!!

Tuna can't go thru security either. I have seen it confiscated when it's in water/oil packed cans. You can buy the tuna that comes in the vacuum pouches.

I have flown twice in the past year with a quart size ziplock full of ice cubes with no problems...I was keeping food cold with them in my soft sided cooler.

Since a bag of ice isn't permitted, you should not rely on being able to take one through security. Just because the TSA didn't find and remove your ice bags doesn't mean that they are allowed. Tests have shown that the TSA sometimes misses guns and dummy explosives sent through security, but no one would argue that means its OK to take them in your carry-on bags.

Ice is a liquid and as this poster points out, all the prior posters sucess proves is that the TSA does not do a good job enforcing thier own rules. (If you think that's "protection":lmao: ) I am personally envolved in an ongoing "test" Several years ago I forgot to remove my 1 oz tube of hand lotion on several trips and put it in the "baggie'. When I realized this I wondered "how long" can I pull this off.........YEARS!!!! No one has ever caught it and I think it's about three years now.....If they ever do, I plan to write a letter to the TSA telling them that Agent X was the first one in X years and should be congratulated... Now what about the REST???:lmao:

There are really nice Thermos containers for food. The ones I saw were smaller; like for a serving or two for someone. We just saw some yesterday at Target when buying a Thermos for liquid. And now that school supplies are already in the stores, you may find a deal!n Says it will keep food cool for 12 hrs.

Just a thought but if you are staying Club Level why don't you just eat the pb&js and yogurt etc that is going to be there already?

As for the consistency of the TSA, I like your test Carol! I wonder how long it will take for them to find it. I have often flown with things I wasn't supposed to have without even realizing it and have never had anything confiscated.

I carry lip gloss all the time and they never take it. It's very tiny containers though. I wouldn't try that with anything bigger.

Another option for the food that is allowed past security (not yogurt).

Put ice or a cheap ice pack until you get to the airport, then throw it out before you go through security. Your stuff will be cold for another hour or two depending on what it is carried in.

Buy a cold drink on the other side of security and put it in the bag, that will help to continue to keep it cold.
