Fresh fruit in carry-on luggage, ok???

When flying, is it allowable to carry fresh fruit in one’s carryon luggage? We have placed an order for perishables items with GardenGrocer but I like to choose my own fruit and I would like to bring our fruit in my carryon baggage. Has anyone brought apples, bananas, peaches, etc in their carryon luggage? I do not mean just “an apple or a banana”, but enough fruit for the week.

There should be no security issue, but Florida has an interest in preventing fruit flies and other pests from entering the state.
