frenchdoor vs side by side fridge

I like the idea of the French Door. I have a side by side now and large items just can't go in it like pizzas or racks of ribs. When I was a kid in the 70's we had a freezer on bottom and I liked it back then but they kind of fell out of favor and were hard to find.

The fan on the fridge that blows the cold air up from the freezer to the fridge part died just a few days before Christmas after we'd had the fridge for just over a year (very inconvenient but fortunately we had a backup). We replaced the fan, but it happened a second time not long ago but mysteriously started working again. Maybe a design flaw?

Our freezer control board also died after us owning the unit for 3.5 years, ours is a GE though. Apparently they had a known problem with some boards made in China (bad capacitors) and were replacing boards for customers within a certain time frame. We we're long out of warranty and past the time frame it should have failed but I called and emailed anyhow. It cost us $175 to fix, $100 for the new board and $75 for the emergency labor call (before everything defrosted) and GE agreed to at least send us a check for the cost of the board (well $92 - their cost). Anyhow while I was po'd that a 2500 fridge broke after only 3 years, I was pretty happy they agreed to reimburse us, especially since we were out of warranty.
