I am looking for a great recipe for French Toast and I am hoping someone will share their family favorites here.

I'm sorry I didn't know you needed a recipe for french toast
I just beat eggs with milk (if you're not watching diet half and half works best) and vanilla. I soak the bread in it for a few seconds until really good and coated. can't let it sog up to much or bread will fall apart. I like a nice thick bread like texas toast style bread for this. Fry it up in some butter and Voila French Toast.

mine is pretty basic, the bread can make a big difference though.

I just mix eggs, vanilla, and cinnamon.

The best French Toast I have ever made was with egg nog bread! YUM

Try this

Get the Peppridge farm cinnamon bread, melt some butter in the bottom of a baking pan. Add brown sugar.

Add 2 layers of the bread. Make your normal egg/milk and pur it over. Let it soak in a bit and bake.

Im sure you could top it with your own ides too.

Same thing, but thick slices of baguette bread is really good!

Dh LOVES French Toast, so I had to get his mom's recipe when we got married. I use basically use what everyone else use: eggs, vanilla, sugar, cinnamon, but I (I mean MIL) add a little softened butter and heavy cream to the mix before I dunk the bread. I usually use thick-sliced French bread.

Mash up banana. Add egg, cinnamon and vanilla. Yum!

Banana French Toast

Recipe By :Better Homes and Gardens
Serving Size : 4 Preparation Time :0:00
Categories : Breakfast Casseroles

Amount Measure Ingredient -- Preparation Method
-------- ------------ --------------------------------
2 medium ripe bananas -- sliced 1/4" thick
1 tablespoon lemon juice
12 slices French bread -- 1/2 inch thick
1/2 cup semisweet or milk chocolate chips
2 eggs -- beaten
3/4 cup milk
2 tablespoons honey
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 cup sliced almonds
1 teaspoon sugar
Maple syrup -- optional

In a bowl gently toss bananas with lemon juice.
Arrange half the bread slices in the bottom of a greased 2 quart square baking dish. Top bread with a layer of bananas, chocolate chips and remaining bread slices.
In a medium bowl combine eggs, milk, honey, vanilla and cinnamon. Pour slowly over bread to coat evenly. Cover and chill for 6-24 hours.
Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Uncover the baking dish.
Sprinkle bread with almonds and sugar.
Bake for 5 minutes. Reduce oven to 325 degrees.
Bake 20-25 minutes more or until knife inserted near the center comes out clean and top of French toast is lightly browned. Let stand 10 minutes.
Serve with maple syrup, if desired.

Yep, half and half is fabulous if calories don't count!

My grandmother's recipe, never had any measurements, just pinches and pours:

Very thick, fresh bread (Texas toast thick)
Whisked eggs, sugar, vanilla, half&half,
plus pinches of: cinnamon, zest of orange, &/or nutmeg depending on your taste

Dunk and soak bread

Melt butter on the griddle

Slap the soaked pieces of bread in the butter, flip when the side gets golden brown. If you've got the same amount of butter as my grandmother used, the ONLY word to properly describe this action is "slap"!

Serve with powdered sugar and fresh strawberries.
Syrup was not allowed near this concotion in my grandmother's presence: we'd be denounced as heathens.

MMMMMMM

now I'm hungry for breakfast
I think I'm making french toast for dinner. Hummmm

Go to foodtv.com and search for peanut butter and bannana french toast. This is an awsome recipe. It is eggs, heavy cream, rum, vanilla, nutmeg, cinnamon, bannanas, honey, peanut butter, and whole grain bread. You can leave out the rum if you must, or just use the batter to make the toast without the bannanas and peanut butter. It kicks bootey any way you make it.:cool1:

I love french toast. I make it with eggs, butter and cinnamon but I put grape jelly on top. Yummy :D

When we were on vacation in La Jolla, we had the best french toast at the Brockton Inn. I asked for their recipe.

You take about a quart of whipping cream, 10 eggs, vanilla, orange extract and orange juice (I changed it to use lemon extract and lemonade). Mix it all up. Take a loaf of french bread and cut it on the diagonal into slices (you'll have oval pieces of toast). Put the bread in the whipping cream mixture and soak overnight. In the morning drain off excess cream. Brown slices of bread on both sides on a buttered griddle. Put in a 425 to 450 degree oven for 5 to 10 minutes until puffy.

It tastes like a souffle. It's not so healthy, so I don't make it often. If you like this recipe and want the exact measurements, let me know and I'll look it up and repost.

I use the standard eggs/milk/vanilla/cinnamon mixture, but I always beat a little bit of wondra flour in there as well. (Not much, just a tiny bit.) It thickens up the egg batter a little bit, so it still soaks into the bread wonderfully but also makes a great crust on the outside.

I don't know why, but if I leave the bread out overnight and let it dry out a little, it makes much better french toast. I agree with the big thick bread slices and I always add a touch of vanilla.

French toast is also REALLY good with Challah and Croissants! ::yes::

Call me weird, but I don't use anything except eggs and milk. AND, I don't put anything sweet in it or on it. I put margarine/butter on it and SALT & PEPPER.

I never could see why people put something sweet on eggs...

Use milk, eggs, cinnamon & vanilla. Prefer to use Challah but have used baguettes.

Macadamia nut french toast/sugared bacon
I always get raves over these...

4 lg eggs, lightly beaten
1/4 c sugar
1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
2/3 c orange juice
1/3 c milk
1/2 tsp vanilla
1 16 oz loaf of Italian bread, sliced
2/3 c margarine, melted
1/2 c macadamia nuts, chopped & toasted

Combine first 6 ingredients in a bowl, stirring well. Arrange bread slices in a sinlge layer in a lightly greased 13x9x2" baking dish. Pour egg mixture over bread slices, cover & chill at least 8 hoiurs, turning once.
Pour butter into 15x10x1" jellyroll pan, place bread slices in single layer in pan. Bake at 400 for 10 min., sprinkle with nuts. Bake 10 additional minutes. Garnish with powder sugar and ground nutmeg.

1/3 cup firmly packed brown sugar
3 tbl Worcestershire sauce
2 tbl spicy honey mustard
1 lg egg, beaten
12 slices bacon
1 1/2 c fine, dry bread crumbs

combine first 4 ingredients in a shallow bowl, stirring well. Dip each slice of bacon into sugar mixture, coat with bread crumbs. Arrange bacon slices on a rack on a large broiler pan. Bake at 350 for 35 min or until bacon is crisp. Drain well on paper towel.

This is what we always have for Easter brunch. WONDERFUL!!!

cinnamon bread from our local bakery~ eggs, milk, vanilla, more cinnamon and voila yummy. although now I am curious about the half and half do you use the as same amount you would for milk? oh ya i also use a tablespoon of sugar in mine.

I had something similar to this at a restaurant in the Poconos.

Stuffed French Toast

per serving:
2 thickly sliced white bread pieces
2 Tbls. soft cream cheese
1Tbl. seedless raspberry jam

Spread each slice of bread with 1 Tbl. cream cheese. Spead jam to within ¼" of edges on one slice. Put slices together to form a sandwich. Seal edges.

Beat one egg with 2 Tbls. milk, 1 tsp. vanilla and 1 Tbl. granulated sugar. Coat each "sandwich" with egg mixture. Heat butter in skillet and cook like regular French Toast.

Top with sliced, fresh strawberries and powdered sugar or whipped cream.
