Can someone please tell me what is a "Beignets"? And can you only get them at the French Quarters?

They are a fried doughnut very airy and light and dusted with powdered sugar. They make them fresh for you at POFQ. Very messy to eat but delicious!:thumbsup2 You can only get them at POFQ.

Beignets are a fried doughnut treat...Only two places that I have ever had one are the Cafe DuMonde in New Orleans and the food court at POFQ....Enjoy

They are heaven on earth! A few weekends ago, I took my daughter and a few of her friends to New Orleans for the weekend. A tradition is to have cafe au lait and beignets at the Cafe du Monde.
A kinda sorta way to make them at home is to buy frozen bread dough and defrost it. heat oil til very hot. Break of little chunks of dough and fry til golden and puffy, drain. Put powdered sugar in a paper lunch bag and drop in a few of the beignets, shake to coat and serve. They are only good very warm or hot. For the cafe au lait, heat milk and pour equal amounts of hot coffe and hot milk into a cup. Coffee must be strong.

Never had them, curious for my girls to try them - they love funnel cake. Is this kinda similar?

A little- beignets are puffier and look more like little pillows.

Think of a beignet as a variant of a donut, covered with powdered sugar. Not an exact description, but as close as I can get!

What memories this brings back! In Boston we call this Fried Dough - it was a Sunday morning treat I made for the kids for years. ::yes::

The Beignets have a slightly different flavor than the fried bread dough, which is why they are such a treat for us when staying at FQ.:thumbsup2

Alot of grocery stores around here have the mix. It comes in a box in the same area the flour, corn meal, and shake n bake mixes are. Just add water, roll out 1/4" thick, cut into 2" squares, drop them into a deep fryer, then roll in powdered sugar. As they're frying they puff up and have sort of a hollow middle. Sort of like sopapillas, but you roll the bignets in lots of powdered sugar while they're hot. To me they're alot like sopapillas, except sopapillas are Mexican puffed dough served hot with honey and bignets are New Orleans puffed dough served hot covered in tons of powdered sugar.

The ones you get at Port Orleans French Quarter are not nearly as good as the real ones from New Orleans. The ones we got were tough and nasty. Never again from POFQ.

We lived in the New Orleans area for 12 years. I can see why people make a fuss over beignets but I've never been as impressed with them as the rest of the world seems to be. Fresh, hot Krispy Kremes are better but that's just me. LOL!

Here's a tip for the beignet first-timers: when you move them close to your mouth to take a bite, don't inhale. If you do, you'll inhale sugar. The body's immediate response is to cough. Now your family & friends are dusted with sugar. LOL!

:thumbsup2 I totally agree. I was born, raised, and live in New Orleans. I tried them at POFQ last Dec and was disappointed. I figured they would taste good since they're so easy to make at home. I was wrong. :confused3

The beignets are actually one of the deciding factors in which moderate we would stay in this time....when we go at the end of November! (Can't wait!)

Since many of us haven't been fortunate enough to experience the authentic New Orleans beignets, POFQ will have to do. That said, I LOVE THEM! In only 21 more days I can pig out on POFQ beignets again! Nom nom nom. :worship:

Sorry, you poor things. Kind of like having to use margarine when you are used to real butter. Or watching dinner theater at Branson when you are used to Broadway.
