Freezing Milk?

Do any of you all freeze milk? Our grocery has some on sale and I'd love to stock up and avoid the grocery for the rest of the time before our April 2 trip. We normally use milk for cooking with or cereal, does is change the consistency at all? Thanks!

I froze pumped breastmilk for my daughter - it was good for a year in a deep freeze or 3-6 months in a regular freezer depending on how often you went in it - and it was pretty much the same after it thawed but it had to be used within 24 hours of thawing. Not sure if that is true for cows milk, but if it is true you probably don't want to freeze a whole gallon.

My family goes through milk at lightening speeds, so I've never frozen milk, but I freeze buttermilk all the time. I usually freeze it in ice cube trays, then transfer the frozen ice cubes to freezer bags and defrost a few at a time as needed.

My mom used to freeze milk in its original 1 qt. plastic bag packaging. It worked fine. Because we could partly see through the plastic bags, we could see that the fat seemed to come to the top of the milk. You may want to give the thawed milk a good shake to distribute the fat through the milk before you open it.

Good idea! Thanks! I love buttermilk, but since I'm the only one who drinks it, sometimes it goes bad before I can use it, this will save me some $$$.

My mom freezes milk all of the time.

She has several 1 quart jars and uses those - she does not fill them completely up.

:)

Absolutely, milk can be frozen in the original gallons with no problems at all. It will last several weeks (or more) without 'any' difference in the consistency, or taste. Our family has done it for years with no issues.

It's great for larger families and when you can catch a good sale! The 'main' reason I wouldn't do it more is a 'space' issue in the freezer! :)

BEFORE FREEZING----Make sure you pour a little bit out (like 1 cup). I normally just have a near empty milk container and pour a little bit from each gallon into that. You have to do this because milk expands when frozen and will cause the container to burst.

ONLY THAW IN THE REFRIGERATOR. It will take 24-48 hours to completely thaw. Do not try to let it thaw in room temperature or the milk will sour.

Hope that helps.

Yep! I freeze milk all the time. I do open it up and pour a little out first. I do just let it thaw on the counter for several hours before putting it in the fridge. It seems to take forever to thaw if I don't and I don't have any trouble. Just shake it up and its fine!!

FYI- There is no milk produced in Alaska and so milk is routinely sold frozen in the stores. My mom always froze it.

Thanks y'all! Because were apparently the only ones in Mississippi who drink 1%, we can frequently get gallons for less than $2. I've always wondered if stocking up was the way to go!
