Freeze Cheese, save $$$$

Wow. I never knew this! Thaks for posting this thread!! m a freeze-a-holic but never thought about freezing cheese.

I got the tip about the 12 cents/bag cheese from a friend.

I PMd a few budget board folks that I saw lived in Cicagoland so they could get in on it. All of them went and took advantage of the deal.

Checker was bored by it all.

Most surprising reaction to me was the friend I saw at the store when I was shopping. I told her about the bargain she could get and she said "Oh, I really don't need cheese right now."

To the uber-frugal that answer is beyond understanding.

Maybe she didn't know you can freeze cheese???

I really don't have a reason to freeze shredded cheese. It lasts for months in the fridge, but what about deli cheese?

I buy deli cheese a lot and have to pay full price. Would love to buy several pounds of it when on sale and freeze the extra. Would this work?

Be careful with the blocks of cheese. I find that they are crumble very easy after freezing when you go to slice them. We do freeze shredded, crumbled, or cubed cheese (or those small singles) but we don't freeze the big blocks anymore because we usually use them for slicing (as opposed to shredding).

Thanks OP for starting this thread and for sharing your info! I LOOOOOVE cheese and I had some coupons for free cheese. I ended up sharing the coupons with family because I did not know that I could have frozen all that free cheese.:headache:

annsteere, add me to your Chicago land PM list! I would love to hear of awsome deals like this.:goodvibes

annsteere-
please add me to your Chicagoland PM list! I love saving $$$.;)

I'm really surprised that people DON'T already freeze cheese (and butter). Thought everyone did, LOL!

I do not freeze good cheese - just the cheap stuff like American cheese slices, cheddar, shredded, etc. We've always bought the huge bag of shredded Mild Cheddar at Costco and freeze it in gallon freezer bags. We use a lot of cheese but with only 2 of us, we can't eat that much before it goes bad.

can you freeze cream cheese? I always wonder this every year when it's on sale around the holidays...

I have frozen cream cheese. But the texture changes.

I wouldn't put it out for something like the appetizer where you cover a block of cream cheese with jelly and crab meat. But I DO freeze it for cheesecakes, or recipes where you cook the product and cream cheese is just one ingredient.

I just bought 10 packages of shredded cheese because it was on sale, but it doesn't expire until October. I guess I don't see why you would need to freeze it, because I can certainly use all 10 packages in 4 months. :confused3

Yes but after you open it and use it and have some left you only have less than a week to use it before it goes bad. So say I need 1/2 a cup of cheese for a recipe, i use it, put the rest in the freezer. :)

Hey, cheese is on sale at Krogers this week for $1.24/bag.

Buy 5, get 1 free (so .99c a bag) and when I checked out I got a $4 off my next purchase coupon. Woohoo, I was excited... basically .20c/bag at that point!! :)

We do this too, but I freeze it laid out on cookie sheets so I can just grab a handful from the freezer to sprinkle on whatever we're cooking. Works great!

I don't freeze good stuff, like brie, goat cheese, bleu cheese, stuff with texture. The shredded basic stuff works like a charm, though.

That has been our experience with blocks of cheddar also.

I do freeze single American slices that are not individually wrapped with no problem.

I also freeze sliced american cheese (the kind from the deli) without any problem or change in texture or flavor.

Not necessarily. The bags of preshredded stuff for me last anywhere from 2 weeks to a month (sometimes even longer!) before they start to go bad.
