I only buy cheese when it's on sale. I freeze it and then pull it out and thaw overnight before using. I wait until Kraft cheese is 1/2 off, then I buy a months worth. I refuse to pay full price for cheese! I buy cheese blocks, shredded, sticks, crumbles, etc. FYI i've never tried freezing american cheese slices, but those usually keep well so I buy 4 packs and just keep them in the fridge.

This is a great idea. I've never tried it, but I think I may have to. I've heard you can also freeze butter.

I recently found out you can freeze wine. I like to cook with it, but we don't drink it much. I froze it in 1/2 cup quantities in ziplock freezer bags. It works great. It doesn't really freeze all the way, more slushy. It thaws out on the counter while you get the other ingredients ready.

I always freeze mozzarella cheese, it is just too expensive to throw away. In the winter I make that weight watchers cabbage soup (it has like 5 veggies in it and i add a little more tomato paste then what it calls to make it red) and then I buy little disposable bowls with lids (that i wash and reuse anyways, at my dollar store they sell them 4 for $1) and I put the soup in those and freeze them. They come in handy when you aren't feeling all that well.

I have been doing this for years. I buy the huge 5 lb. bag of shredded jack/cheddar mix at Costco and individually portion it out into sandwich size ziplock bags and then freeze it. That way I can just have one bag out and thawed in the refrigerator at a time and I know that I can make a pizza or quesadillas with that and the rest won't spoil.

Hmm... glad I read this. Kroger has their cheese 3/$4... I may have to make another trip, I only got what I thought we'd use within the expiration period.

I always buy the HUGE bags of cheddar, mozarella and monteray Jack schredded cheeses in BJ's and freeze them. After they are frozen I bang them against the table to break up the chunks.
My boys can make up whatever they want to have then grab a handful of frozen cheese to sprinkle on top and pop it into the toaster oven or microwave and it cooks in seconds. Make sure it is a resealable bag or else break the large bag into smaller bags. I don't put them into smaller bags since this is a wasted step for me, my way works fine.

I buy the american cheese slices at Sam's Club and freeze those. As long as they are the individually wrapped kind, they freeze and thaw fine. The ones that are not individually wrapped work too but the cheese tends to stick together when you try to pull a piece off.

I've just recently started freezing shredded cheese, too. Our local grocery store (HEB) has the 2 cup bags on sale for 5 for $5 occasionally. Buying a chest freezer for our garage was one of the best investments we ever made-- I hardly ever buy meat or shredded cheese unless it's on sale! --Katie

I just bought 10 packages of shredded cheese because it was on sale, but it doesn't expire until October. I guess I don't see why you would need to freeze it, because I can certainly use all 10 packages in 4 months. :confused3

10 packages in your fridge over 4 months makes sense.

Our Jewel had a special that combined with Kraft back in April. Using both I was able to buy Kraft shredded cheese for 12 cents per package.

At 12 cents per bag, I bought 60 bags. (About what two bags would normally cost).

I don't have room for 60 bags of cheese in my fridge. So, knowing they could go in the laundry room freezer let me take advantage of this great sale.

Butter freezes really well. I usually get a deal on two or more packages at a time so I just put the extras in the freezer until I need them.

I will have to try the wine idea. I love to use red wine to cook with but I don't like to drink it, so it usually goes bad in my fridge before I can use it up.

I've done this for years! You can literally freeze EVERYTHING!!! You name it, I've froze it! I get marked down cheese all the time. Sometimes I shred it myself then freeze, or I freeze it in whole chunks. Like others said, even when you freeze a big bag of shredded cheese, it's easy to pull out a handful or 2 frozen to use as needed. No reason to keep it in the fridge.

I buy the 7lb packages of sliced cheese on sale. I then take "chunks" about half a pound or so and individually wrap it and freeze that way. So I can take a small pack of sliced cheese out at a time as needed.

I have been doing this for a while, and you don't have to thaw the shreds if they are going into something. I just use them as is as long as I can seperate them.

:worship::worship::worship: It's official, you are my HERO!! Talk about a great score!

Just curious, what if anything did the checker say??

I've been freezing cheese and butter for years...I don't freeze wine, I just drink what I don't cook with. LOL But yes, I knew you could do that, actually on some cooking show it suggested using ice cube trays to freeze your wine, then when you need it you just use a cube or two for cooking. :)

annsteere, I wish I could find a deal like that!! WTG!!

Good for you!

WOW! 12 cents I want that deal! :thumbsup2

I freeze everything - Lunch Meat, Cheese, Butter, Juice boxes, pepperoni, hot dogs, ect, ect... If it can be frozen it has been frozen at my house. I just HATE to buy things at full price! I also HATE to have to "run" to the store because I do not have what I need for dinner. popcorn::

Schools freeze their cheese as well. When we get shipments in from USDA we will get lota and lots of 30# boxes and we have to store it in the freezer just to have room!!

I freeze lots of stuff also...it just makes sense!!

wow, I have always freezed my cheese. I cook with it anyways, it melts just the same. Everyone always thought it was strange...I am so glad to hear I am not the only one!

I never pay full price for cheese either. The usual price I buy it is about $1 for an eight ounce bag. I just buy a few bags, and that'll usually last me until the next sale. It never quite tastes the same after being frozen to me.
