Freedom to Marry Day Protest Planned

You are intolerant to those who disagree with you and call them and/or imply that they are bigoted, haters, and homophobes (fake word alert).

:lmao:

So Rick's intolerant of those who are intolerant? :rotfl2:

Count me in! :thumbsup2

It isn't the city's policy to hand out a certificate that says "I issue this Certificate of Inequality to you because your choice of marriage partner displeases some people whose displeasure is, apparently, more important than principles of equality."

That is the personal policy of the clerk in question, not the city. But by handing it out as part of her official duties, i.e., denying the marriage application, I can see where people would view the certificate as being part of official city policy.

Easily solved. Put a disclaimer on the certificate.

But I don't see how a gay couple would assume it's the city's policy since they obviously haven't gotten a marriage certificate. They'd have to be a bit bonkers.

I don't know why I jump into these debates on the DIS. I guess I keep hoping someone who opposes gay marriage will give us a valid reason why it should not exist. I'm sorry, but because you think sex between two men or two women is icky, that still doesn't make it a valid reason. Then of course the other reason we see so frequently on this thread is "God said so" (which he didn't). The idea that rational thought should have any role in the debate seems alien to the anti-equality mob.....The simple fact of the matter is the idea that gays will "destroy marriage" is only the born from the irrational fears and prejudice of the anti gay marriage crowd. And until someone offers up some valid reason why two consenting adults should not get married, straight or gay, I think I'll bow out. Speaking of icky, I always end up feeling that way after reading one of these threads. :crazy2:

You know, I'd much rather have control of the time/space continuum. Or invisibility. Much cooler super hero powers.

Again, I'm not talking about the denial of the marriage license not being city policy - it obviously is. I'm talking about the certificate being handed out.

And if all it takes to make the certificate in question OK is a disclaimer, then I'm assuming that a similar disclaimer issued by a minister ("This is my own personal prayer, I paid my own expenses to be here and the school system has nothing to do with what I'm about to say") will make it possible for prayers to come back to graduations and football games?

As I said before, I don't have any problems with the sentiments being expressed in the certificate, nor do I see anything wrong with a volunteer handing these out to people as they leave the courthouse. However, for the clerk to be handing them out as part of her official duties lends it the air of city approval of the certificate itself.

If their faith and resistance are so weak that they have to have laws to prevent them from doing anything that their religion considers immoral, they should be working on their own issues first.

I understand what you're talking about; you misunderstood me. Obviously, as gay couples wouldn't get a marriage certificate, how would they believe a certificate of inequality was part of city policy? Don't you think if they assumed the city's policy was that preventing them from marrying is bad, that they should get a marriage certificate instead? What would be the point of them going to the clerk's office anyway except to protest? As I said before, the gay couples would have to be bonkers to believe the city government in general gave a rip about equality. And a disclaimer on the certificate would say that anyway.

If the city has an issue with the clerk's personal expression of opinion, they can prohibit the certificates' distribution. But that would be much ado about nothing.

I agree. Upset about same-sex marriage? Get all hot and bothered in the context of your religious community. Complain to your therapist. Raise your own kids differently. But leave my friends, my cousins, my co-workers, and Lord knows, maybe my own children and grandchildren someday, ALONE. Let them get married in peace.

And no, I'm not gay. But I'm not black or Jewish either, and I oppose slavery and the holocaust. It's about time we as a society end this inequality.

OK, I see what you're saying - thanks for the clarification.

However, I still think the city should put a stop to the clerk doing it as part of her duties. Plaster people with them on the outside of the building, as they walk down the steps, whatever. Post it on billboards. But if we're going to use the "if it's done in the context of a government setting or by a government employee, then the government endorses it" standard for things such as prayers, Nativity scenes, Menorahs (sp?), etc., then it should apply in this case as well.

Go Judi, you speak it sister:thumbsup2

You know, I think we are going about this all wrong (as a LGBT community). Instead of fighting for equality we should first start pushing the idea that marriage is forever and a sanctioned by god. Therefore we should really outlaw divorce. Make it punishable by prison time or such. I don’t see the problem because all of those opposed to gay marriage feel that god created the institution of marriage.

You see where I am going? I leave my hands off of your marriage so why is it that you feel the need to tell me how mine should be?

Ain't that the truth. You'd think some of these naysayers would get all hot and bothered over some of these celebrity marriages that last 2 days or 2 weeks. As long as they aren't gay, they get a pass, I guess. :confused3

My mother's cousin and her partner have been together 51 years. Longer than many of the people who hate them for trying to "destroy the sanctity of marriage" have been alive.

So they think it's yucky. That's ok, they don't have to get involved or watch.

here's a question: Do gay people find public displays of affection by heteros or the thought of heteros doing their thing "yucky" ? I'm really curious....

Personally I htink the focus on gay amrraige comes from the fact that since they likley feel it will never apply to them, or anybody they love, they are free to be bigoted and discrminate at will.

They will never go after divorce because quite the opposite is true. Even church leaders can't stay married and very few people don't know somebody who has needed a divorce.

It's always interesting when people pick one sin to focus on, but it's not hard to figure out why.

Here's a better idea. I think if we're going to ban things that are yucky, and use the bible as a means to do so, I say we make okra illegal. Now THAT stuff is just plain gross. And the Bible says so.

"Thou shalt not suffer an okra to live so thou musteth fling thy evil vegetable into the pits of Hell itself, next to the sinners of the flesheth and false prophets and stuff."
