Instead of doing (and paying for) port excursions, at every port. Are there free things to do?

Some ports are better than others in regards to what might be close to the port and cost nothing. There are definitely things to do that will cost less than a planned excursion. Many Caribbean ports you can get a low cost taxi at the port and go to a beach that is free or has an admission fee of a few dollars. I use tripadvisor.com for researching things available to do in port.

There will be activities on the very quiet ship.
The pools will be empty, no line for the Aquaduck.
One of the sit down restaurants will be open for lunch.
If you have kids the clubs will be open and less crowded.
They will be showing movies.
You paid big bucks to be on the ship enjoy it.

That's what we did two out of four ports. It was great.

Grand Cayman, Cozumel, St Maarten, and St Thomas are great for just getting off the ship and shopping/eating. There is a lot near the port. Jamaica not so much, but there is a little bit near the port. What ports will you be doing? That would help a lot, since there are tons of ports, ie Europe, Alaska, Caribbean.

We will be going to Cozumel, Grand Cayman, Jamaica and Castaway Cay.

Well in every port there are free things to do... window shopping or just walking around the port seeing the sights. However some ports are less friendly than others so always be careful when adventuring by yourself. I've been to Cozumel and right outside the dock there is a huge shopping complex that you can walk around in that is pretty safe, Grand Caymen has less but it's safer to walk around the streets and Castaway Cay is the best because you can literally swim at the beach for nothing! Happy Sailing! :sail:
