I am trying to make a presentation but I don't have powerpoint. I know that powerpoint costs money which I don't have. Does anyone know of another program that is similar to this that I can download for free? Please let me know either here or through a pm. Thanks.

Try www.openoffice.org

It is a free, fully compatible version of Windows Office; made by Sun. It has a version of powerpoint called "Impress" that allows you to de everything powerpoint does.

I first used it with a version of Linux, but they have a version that works with any Windows or MAC OS, or Linux.

I have used open office before as a word processor. I have begun to download the e-press one mentioned. I'll give that a try and if I find too much disabled, I will certainly try open office.

Please post your experiences with the software. I am not familiar with Powerpoint but I have looked at getting it for the kids, who have learned about it in school. I also would like to have something they could use like Powerpoint. Thanks, great thread!

Well, I just started to use it and so far I am not impressed with the freeware version. If you buy the program you can either make a presentation using a program just like power point but with the freeware you have to use this super easy, oversimplified version. I'll get back to you after I use it a little more.

Edited to add: I have uninstalled the program and would not recommend it to others. I'm going to give Open Office a try.

Use OpenOffice. It's a great open source office suite and has all the capabilities of MSOffice.

I have Open Office and MS Office on one of my PCs at home and honestly I love OpenOffice.

I used OpenOffice much more than Powerpoint, so my comparision is a little weak. But there was nothing I couldn't do in OpenOffice. It is fully operational, and it is a full substitute for Powerpoint; it's not some freebie version of something they want you to buy.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I am using Open Office now and it great. That other download was truly ridiculous. No offense to the person who recommended it but it was a just an advertisement and a bad one at that.

FYI, there's plenty of free software out there that does a great job replacing the very expensive versions. Chek out www.linux.org for a list of open source and free software available for anyone, most of which has versions for windows as well as linux.

Thanks gala for the link. I'll have to keep it in mind for the next time I'm looking for something.

click on applications from the left frame. this will open up the page with tons of programs that work on linux. Some of these open source programs also work in Windows.

Another open source depository that I like to go to is http://sourceforge.net/ Click on Projects, then Software Map and you'll find plenty of open source programs.

For the openoffice download, it asks you to "select your download site." What does that mean?

there are a lot of mirror sites that offer the openoffice download. It means there are plenty of places to download, so one site doesn't get bogged down by downloaders.

Just pick a site near you and go for it.
