Sorry, This is a morbid subject, however many (70%) folks do not have one. Famous attorney Robert Shapiro just recently lost his son Brent, and is bringing this necessary document to light (saw him on Larry King tonight). If you go to www.legalzoom.com (Robert is one of the founders of this company) and click on living will, you can get this taken care of for free. There is a space when you get thru the questionaire, like a promotional code. Just type "brent" and the total for this service will be $0.00. This is good thru Sunday 10/23 to my knowledge......I am sure you can find forms for your state and do this yourself, but this looks like a good service.....postage free as well.......

Regards.....

Thank you for this link. I filled one out for myself and it was very quick and easy.

Thanks for posting! I completed one for myself and DH. I book marked the web sight. For $30 we might complete our Durable Power of Attorney's through them as well. We have procrastinated enough and the sight makes it very easy to do. I want to see the documents we just completed before I purchase any.

Get your Durable Medical Power of attorney done now! Two words for you: Terri Shiavo

Thanks for posting this. I just got one done for every member of my family!

Make sure you know the laws of your State some will not accept a living will and prefer a Health Care Proxy.

Did you know that almost all states will accept a handwritten (last) will. No lawyer needed. A handwritten will is better than a typed one in many cases. It follows a very old tradition, becuse people have to be allowed to write one on their deathbed.

Call your local hospice and see if they have a living will/healthcare power of attorney workshop coming up. The workshops and the documents are free, plus you get to ask all the questions you want. I've been a volunteer notary a couple times at our local hospice's workshop.

This may very well be true, but i wouldn't advise it. My dad made a homemade will he found on the internet. It didn't have the "proper" legal language, nor was it notorized. Our attorney laughed when he saw it. We were able to get the will qualified(after jumping through some extra hoops) but due to the lack of proper language, there have been a number of snafus regarding the dispersal of assets and property. I wish he had made the investment in a REAL will and saved us a lot of headaches.

Be aware that there is a difference between a living will which states basically I don't want to be on life support, or whatever, etc. and an actual legal document that states THE NAME OF THE PERSON WHO CAN MAKE THAT DECISION ON YOUR BEHALF. We had the legal document drawn up when we had our druable powers of attorneys done. I had no idea that just making my wishes known by writing them down was not the same thing as having someone legally designated to make the decision and carry it out for me. Without that part, there is a good chance that your wishes will not be honored. We have used the durable power of attorneys several times when we moved and we were at closings on the same day in different states. Came in very handy.

For those of you who did do this, I actually recieved my documents today. I did one for my wife later than I originally did mine, which due to the demand, is to be delivered in 6 to 8 weeks. Not to belabor the point, but the docs looks to be done by the state you are from. You will still have to take this to a notary, but the document looks pretty well done. Mine is titled "Living Will/ Health Care Power of Attorney". Hope this works out for you.......

Regards
