Free Internet Access????

I don't mind paying for Internet Access but $9.95 a day is a total rip off IMHO. ....

Dialup is still only $0.35 per call for members, and there is a data port on every phone at all DVC resorts. Unless I have a lot of photos to upload dialup works just fine for checking email and browsing the DIS while at WDW.

I didn't know this. How did I miss that? :confused3 No time limit on the call?

How much slower is it? Way back when we still had dialup in our home it was so slow I only lurked. Maybe I should go back to dialup so I get more done around here. ;)

No, there is no limit on the length of the call. Just make sure it is a local call- as long distance surcharges will add $$$ to the charge. There is a list of local prefixes in the front of the room phone book. Basically, the Orlando numbers are all local (same for Reedy Creek and Lake Buena Vista), but Kissimmee numbers are long distance.

Yes, dialup will be slower than the broadband in the room, so if the connection speed is critical to your needs, better ante up the $9.95 per day. Dialup has always been fine for most of my needs at WDW though.

Enjoy!

Thanks, Doc. Actually that does sound familiar. We just never bothered taking a laptop before there was high speed at BCV.

But I have another question that will astonish most of you. :rotfl2: What local number do you call? When we had dialup at home there were numbers that were automatically called by the desktop computer. I am clueless what number to call in FL.

Thanks.

BTW, the front page of today's Chciago Tribune has a headline that reads "Plumbing. Telephone. Television. Wireless."

Does anyone know if Disney resorts plan to have wireless acccess in the rooms anytime soon?

The local number for dialup will be assigned by your internet service provider (ISP). I use netzero which has a number of good access numbers in the WDW area, but each ISP will have it's own number. You can usually look that up online by zip code or area and have it already set up on your laptop before you go.

I really wish they would offer it free for the owners, at least.

I also own at an Orlando Marriott, where high speed internet access is totally free. I really do appreciate that.

Yes but like our MVCI properties it is included in the annual fees you pay. It is never free, just spread across all contracts.

On a slight side note, I remember seeing someone on WDW's site that the WiFi was 9.95 for 24 hours.

Question, is that 9.95 for 24 hours starting at XYZ time, or is that 24 hours of connected time. IE, can I login for an hour after we get back from the park on day 1 and then login for another hour on day 3, thus using 2 hours..

I have a feeling that it's probably 24 consecutive hours, but I wouldn't mind throwing down $10 if I can use it throughout my visit.

It's $9.95 for each 24 hour period. If you first logged on today at 5:33pm- your $9.95 will get you thru until 5:33pm tomorrow. At that time, you'd need to login again - for another $9.95.

Really apples to oranges...those ashtrays serve not only as a convenience to smokers, but also to protect our investment. Burn marks, holes in the carpet, cleaning the butts from the shrubbery and walkways all costs $$$.

Providing internet service does nothing to "protect" the resort from damage.

Well, depends how you look at it. Smoking is a luxury much like Internet service (BTW, before someone starts crying that I am picking on smokers, I am not. I am a skoal man which is a worse habit). Tell the smokers that they must pay a smoking fee each day they want to smoke to cover for the ashtrays, etc.

Ban smoking and we won't need to worry about burn holes, butts in the shrubbery, etc and our investment will be that much more preserved. So should they (smokers) have to pay more when it comes to our annual fees?

Like I said earlier, I don't mind paying a little more for Internet access, but 10 bucks a day is overkill.

P.S. Glad to see we have a fellow Texan as a moderator !!!!!

Yep, I do the same or I tether to my cell phone.

I tend to download a great deal of pdf files from work when I am on vacation.

Dial-up juts drags on and on and on and on and on......

Even $4 or $5 a day wouldn't be too bad. We paid $9.95 at the Hilton in Madison, and I really felt like it was a rip-off. But I guess it depends how bad you want to get online...

It is not WiFi in the rooms. ;)

We used the high speed internet last week at BWV for my son's class projects. He's a college senior, and the only way he could join us on vacation was to send his work in via the internet, which required broadband because of size. (Yeah, I know...I wish WE could have done classes this way!)

This worked extremely well, but in normal circumstances I would have felt the $9.95 a day was pretty steep. I don't think it should be totally free, but I think a better cost scale is possible. Maybe something like the previously mentioned lower flat fee per week. $70 for a week of broadband is way high, IMO.

DisFlan

Please don't make it free!

Than you will either have DVC members paying (needlessly) for everyone WiFi or raise admin costs by trying to hash out who should and who should not get WiFi free. I can see it now all the non members that rented from members arguing they should get it free cause it's a members time they are using.

Keep it simple, pay per use.

It seems like $9.95/day is on the low side to wi-fi access.

Also the ideas I really liked where:
1. Use dial up. I know SBC offers free dial up nationwide with each DSL account.
2. Have an on resort PC in one of the common areas where that are connected to free highspeed inet.

I develop insurance applications for a living so vacation is all :badpc: for me.

There are a ton of things that all members must pay for, that not all members use. I say the most fair way to do it is put it to a member vote !!! Then if passed you must enter DVC menebrship number to gain access to internet. Not hard to do at all.

The low side if you are Forbes, Gates, or trump. ;)

I have to agree.
I haven't used the DVD player once since we've owned DVC and as somebody's mentioned I know I paid for that one way or another.
I would prefer they took the DVD player and 1 tv away and give me the internet connection rather than having 2 TVs and a dvd player... hehe...
I know I know... this is just my personal preference... please no flaming... :rotfl2:

I'd even settle for up to $5/24hr... $10 is waaay too much...

The voting idea is great! If only we can suggest that... :cloud9:
