Hello fellow DIS'ers, sadly, we are home from our FABULOUS 10 day WDW trip. We stayed at POP from 10/7-10/13 in the 50's building. (split stay @ OKW 10/3-10/7)

Here's is the preface....get comfortable, I type over 100 WPM and can't wait to share

We have only ever stayed at Deluxe resorts when visiting WDW. Contemporary (loved it) and the Polynesian...also loved it! We decided on staying value to get the most for our $$ during the MYW+ free dining package, so we decided on POP.

First thing I can say is....now this is important coming from me....
I WILL NEVER (probably never) STAY AT A DELUXE OR MODERATE AGAIN!!!

We had an AMAZING time at POP and cannot speak highly enough about it!!! There were some minor differences, which I'll go into further down, but all in all what a HUGE value for the money!!

1. We stayed in the 50's building facing the tip of the bowling pin pool...room 2409. I NEVER heard any voices of my neighbors and no doors slamming! NEVER!! I did hear the occasional toilet flush, but it was not very loud at all as I've read from other posters. It actually sounded like it came from the far back side of the building.

2. I LOVED the theming of the resort, it was Disney in it's truest fashion. I really loved the color of our building, it was purple and made me smile each time I walked to our room

3. The staff was amazing!! My cousin who went with us lost her car key (to rental car) and was already 10 mins. late to her CRT lunch. She asked a CM to hail a cab, but instead they took their PERSONAL POP van and rushed her to the front gate of MK!! Now that's service!

4. The food court was not busy whenever we went to it...remind you we never went early morning or late evening. Always seemed to be around 11:00am or 5:00pm. Not planned, but that is when we mostly went. My husband did go for a coffee refill around 7:00am and he said it was really busy.

5. The food was EXCELLENT!!! Much better than the Food & Fun center @ Contemporary. We ate at all stations, eventually, and had better-than-average meals every time! When we asked for extras, they obliged without hesitation and were never charged for anything extra we got..was all included in dining plan.

6. Again, I LOVED the theming @ POP. After staying deluxe, granted the rooms are bigger, but they didn't feel "Disneyfied" POP was cheery "Groovy" and a fun place to stay. Honestly, if the price @ the deluxes were even only like $20 more per night, I would choose POP.

7. Laundry facilities were AWESOME!! Clean, plentiful, COOL and well kept. Mind you, I pack like a million outfits for everyone and don't ever plan on doing laundry. But due to my husband putting wet swimming trunks in a suitcase leaving the clothes smelling terrible, I was forced to do laundry. The BEST part, is that the laundry facility is right next to the bowling pin pool. So we swam and did laundry at the same time..was GREAT!!

8. LOVED the decorations in the room! Picture was awesome and I loved looking at it before I went to sleep! The bedspreads were so cute..I wanted to take them home, and the setup was very nicely laid out for the most part. Beds were comfortable (kinda firm, but I prefer more firm to more soft) and pillows wonderful.

9. Everything POP gift shop was PERFECT!!! I found things there that I couldn't find anywhere else! It was laid out nicely and was well staffed and clean. LOVED IT

NOW for the draw backs. Remind you, I have only stayed @ Deluxe's prior to this trip, so the negatives are in comparison the CR and POLY.

1) Rooms were a little smaller that I would prefer...but not so small that I would not stay there again. I would prefer a little more room but not a really huge drawback. Other posters made it seem like it was a cracker box, but it is not. We are a family of 4 2 adults and 2 son's 8 & 4 and we were comfortable.

2) Mousekeeping was not nearly as good as I am used to. We got towel animals every day before staying here, and got not a single one the entire trip. But towel animals are not supremely important to me. Nice, but not necessary. They would put all the trash in a large bag and leave it in the room. This bothered me and I called the front desk. They said that this is normal, but said it was no problem and told MK to take all trash, which they did. So..good. In general, room was clean, just not the extra attention to detail I am used to. Again, good enough just not superb.

3) Water pressure is very low. I like strong pressured showers and they just weren't there. Again, OK just not superb. My showers were longer and nicer because of no pressure, but this is something I consider a negative.

4) No elevators on ends of buildings. This has to be my biggest drawback about the entire resort. We stay near the very end of the bldg. and had to climb 4 flights of stairs daily. The elevators were in center of the 3 buildings so you either had to climb the stairs which were closest to parking and your room. OR walk the entire distance of the room wing, catch the elevator and walk all the way back to your room.

***************NOTE TO FUTURE VISITORS AND SELF*************
Request room close to elevator
Unknown drawbacks by requesting room close to elevator....
More foot traffic obviously...therefore more noise??
Closer to room but further from parking....better or worse??

OK ya'll, my fingers are tired and I still have to start my dining and park review... Check my other reviews if you have the time..

I hope this helps those who's questions I may have answered. If you have any specific questions..feel free to ask!

Thanks for the detailed review! I agree with your assessment of Pop, but I thought it was interesting reading your comparisons to that of a deluxe resort. Now I'm off to find your dining reviews!

Wow! Thanks for taking the time to type all that out - even if you DO type 100 wpm, it's still a lot of typing, LOL.

Fun to read your impressions - glad you enjoyed your trip.

What did you think of the bus service? Or did you drive everywhere?

Best wishes-

:cool1: Great report. We LOVE  POP. Can't wait to return in December. Thanks for such a detailed report!

Welcome home.

Thanks for the post. We are not staying at POP but it is so nice to have someone who has stayed at the deluxes to compare and give an honest opinion.

Do us a favor and stay at a moderate next time, then we'll have a comparison on all types. Just kidding! :rotfl:

This was our 17th trip and for the price you can't beat POP! The free dining plan with it made it one of our most favorite times there.

We tip Mousekeeping and we did receive towel animals. Now, we were on the first floor; so, maybe, that makes a difference. Our whole section seemed to have towel animals. We were in room 1119 in the 50s section/Lady.

I feel like I can take two trips instead of one by staying at a value resort in value season.

WOW! What a great review. We plan on staying in a value next trip...glad to hear you had such a great experiance!

What a great review! I've chosen CSR over Pop for our next trip, but know I will be returning to the value resorts again. Have stayed at all of the AS resorts and couldn't imagine shelling out the money for a deluxe again, but got a great rate for CSR so we're going to try a new resort. I'll be staying @Pop in the future. Thanks for the great info.

I agree with you 100%. We only stayed deluxe until we tried Pop right after they opened. Well we only stay at PC now, it's hard to justify spending an extra $150 - $200 a night when we're only there a few hours to sleep. There are a few things I don't like about PC but it's a small price to pay to save so much money. Can you tell I'm a frugel yankee? We love PC and will be back again in January. Maine :firefight

We made almost the same type of decision a few years ago...

Our first 2 trips were to CBR, the first in Trinidad North before it was preferred, the second in Trinidad South which was a little too remote for us.

We did a budget trip, in fact, kids fly free, play free, in Sept 2001, 11 days after 9/11, and we went to ASMu and loved it! We vowed no more moderates, we loved the values!

next trip, June 2002, ASMo, lots of fun - again - great stay at a value resort!

then 7 for 4 (or 5?), November 2003, I surprised the family with an upgrade to WL - WOW - loved it, going back early Dec 2005....

Also did a trip in October 2004 to AKL - liked that a little better than WL...

Did a father/son (14yo) trip in June 2005 to Pop Century - again - wow - loved those value resorts - had a great time - wish we were there longer.

We all constantly discuss our Disney experiences and have come to this decision: When we can afford a deluxe, we will stay at a deluxe, but most likely WL or AKL since they are lower cost; otherwise, it is a Value resort for us!

Of the Values, I would say that Pop and ASMu are our favorites.

Thanks for the great review.

We rented a car but also used bus service 4 times. Never did have more than a 10 minute wait for a bus. The longest wait time was from MGM to POP and that was because we missed the previous bus by just a few minutes.

I did see people hanging their towel ghosts in the windows and they were ALL on the 1st floor..hmm..anyway just a thought. Off to start our 10 day dining review..should be done in an hour or so :rotfl2:
thanks for reading

I am relieved to hear this about Pop from a "Deluxe" person! We will be staying one night at Pop after my convention at the Swan ends. I realize there is no comparison but we wanted to try out Pop for a future trip.

Lately I had been reading negative reports about Pop and was starting to worry.

I was in room 2465 and agree the experience on the whole was ideal. I own at DVC and had never done a value resort before. My only issue was transportation. If you are relying on their buses be aware they drop you off in the parks and pick you up at some of the furthest stops from the gate! A lot of walking from building 2 to the bus also. This was the main area I found of "getting what you pay for". As I have said on here the room was spotless and I heard no noise, the pool was empty, theming great. My DD and myself loved this resort. I would suggest a rental car however. :earsgirl:

Glad you enjoyed your stay and have found your new preferred accomodations for future trips. The Value resorts do give you a great way to stay on site at a very reasonable cost.

That being said, you and I sure do have a vastly different opinion as to what makes for true Disney theming in a resort. "Disneyfied" may indeed be bold colored buildings, cheerily decorated in iconic fashion. Of course my idea of Disney theming in it's truest sense is the likes of a stay at the Polynesian where I am immersed in the lush tropical islands of Polynesia and my hotel is an extension of Adventureland in the MK, or a stay at Port Orleans Riverside (Dixie Landings as I still like to call it) where I am swept away to the Old South as I stroll by the elegant mansions or wander around the residences on the bayou.

Not trying to get down on you for your opinion of what truely makes for a "Disney" hotel, just relaying my concept of what that means for comaprison purposes ;). Disney does have something for everyone.........

WOW!! You can type fast!! And no mistakes! What a great typer you are!

Thanks for that wonderful review! I enjoyed it! I'm glad you enjoyed your stay at POP! Now you'll be saving tons of money staying there and go to Disney more often! How cool is that?! :)

Thelionqueen: You must have been right above us. We were in the last room on the 3rd floor @ the tip of the bowling pin pool. I have to agree w/ you on th walk to the elevator. It rather a long hall after a full day in the parks and your tired. It was nice being on the end though as I think we saw maybe 4 people walk by our room the whole time we were there. We also loved the themeing of the resort and we did met some of the nicest CM's ever there. On the down side we did met some of the rudest and stupidest CM's ever. We actually switched resorts mid way due to all the problems we had. But I do chalk it up to the problems of one stupid CM. Over all though the resort was wonderful.

Thanks for your opinions as well, makes sense. I just wanted to clarify that I am not trying to push my opinions off on anyone else, these are just my own personal observations.

That said, now that I have stayed @ POP, the Polynesian looks like it needs a serious refurbishing. I LOVED staying @ Poly and would have stayed there again this trip had it not been for the package deal.

It's funny how individual tastes differ and how quickly personal ones can too isn't it? POP looked so fresh, colorful, new and inviting that it made Poly seem old and dated (to me of course, I know others will disagree, just MHO).

I still loved going to the Contemporary and will likely stay there again one day. Strictly from a money stand point, by staying value we had lots more $$ to spend on other things which made the trip even more enjoyable.

Just for example, the 10 day package we bought @ POP (including free dining, tickets and room) was $1380. Had we booked @ Poly (was booked BTW when we reserved POP) would have been $3785 for the EXACT same package, exact same perks and tickets. The only difference was the accomodations. For an extra $2400, the money we saved was well worth the minor inconveniences.

Just my opinion again, but I thank the PP for her comments and opinions. There truly is something for everyone!!

Have to say that we loved our 'purple' bldg also!!!! In fact, it was the exact shade of purple that my dd wants to paint her bedroom. I love how the colors change/deepen as you go between the levels. We stayed in the same bldg in August. But we were in the last room as you got to the back of the bldg..right around the corner from the bowling pin stairway to the parking area. If I could have cut down all the trees, I could have stood at my door and been exactly even with the Pop 'guard' shack!!! We were on the third level and loved it. Yes, it was kind of a hike at the end of the day, but I'll take that hike and have some quiet!!! Loved the theming also. It's funny...my dd likes Pop better than the Polynesian. We own at BWV, so obviously love the deluxes. But I love being able to catch a few extra days at the values/moderates at the front end of my stay. I get to experience the other resorts and then head 'home' to BWV. It's so nice to see another deluxe person that actually enjoys the values. Too many times those that choose the value resorts are treated as if they are lesser Disney fans. Nope....so not the case. people talk about the long walk from the bus stops for the value resorts or the long walk to your room at a value. They should stop and compare the walk to some of those rooms at the deluxe resorts. They can be pretty hefty!!! I think that sometimes they actually average out!!!

Holy Moly, you certainly can't argue with those savings.

We're making our first value stay in February (albeit a brief one), would love to have a similar conversion!
