Free Dining and a toddler

My fiance and I are going to be in WDW for the free dining. I am toying with the idea of taking my nephew with me for a few days at the begining of the trip, my ds and dbil would be arriving a few days after we do. He will be turning three the week after we return. I would love to take him to a couple of character meals because I know he would love it. Can I buy the meal plan for him even though he is still technically under three? I don't mind paying for it, it is just that the kid can eat! I will definetely bring proof that he is under three to get him in the parks because he looks way older. Is this possible? TIA

Kids under 3 are free at the buffets (character meals included)! So, no I wouldn't put him on the meal plan.

Also, we took my 2 year old son last year on the dining plan, and some people gave him a meal, even without a voucher (it depends on the server/cashier). Other times he would just eat some of our meals, because you get SO much food with the dining plan anyway.

Yes, but we found that for under 3 the kid does best eating off our plates (or at the buffet off their own plates). I think that buffets will work well for you if he's a big eater, and they're free.

Our grand daughter is a big eater and she is only 13 months old. We leave this weekend and will be followed by my daughter and family next weekend. We already decided that we may have to buy her meals from the menu. She can already eat an entire grill cheese sandwich, a bowl of soup and desert for lunch. She's just a little thing, but can pack it away. Thank goodness we're at a DVC resort, so we can buy food. (BTW: She's a veteran, as this is her 3 trip to WDW.) We do not have any buffets reserved and we are on the dining plan, but daughter and family are not.

If you order food for an "under 3 yr old" guest, you will pay for that food. These guests can eat for free when you dine at a buffet. Or they can share the food from your plate.
