Has anyone ever participated in a deal where it says you will get a Free Companion Airfare ticket? I got an e-mail from American Express saying if I sign up for some program ($2.99 for six months) I would get a certificate for this free ticket thing.

Just wondering if anyone has ever done something like this and can you really get one ticket for free (except it says you have to pay the taxes)?

I know things that sound too good to be true usually are.

Thanks!

I called American Express about the free companion ticket and was told that I had to pay full price for my ticket. There was no savings. It actually would have been about $400.00 more to get the free companion ticket.

I have 20 or 30 unused ones, and am also part of Ameniti with United (which is going to shut down soon - Ameniti)

Since one needs to buy a FULL FARE ticket, the 'free' ticket is worthless. Normally one full fare ticket is more than two discounted tickets.

I used the companion fare under my American Express program. Actually, I got the fare that was advertised online, but was limited in some of the times to depart. I ended up returning on an earlier flight (noon) because the free fare was not available for the later flight

I did have to pay about $45-50 in fees for the second ticket. I also used my SkyMiles for another flight on this trip, but had to use double miles since the SkyMiles Saver had so many blackout dates. But I wanted to use them up before I end up losing them, so it really didn't matter.

Perhaps if you have several choices and book early, you might end up getting an okay deal.
