Is there any truth to the rumor that Floridan residents go to college for free, if to a Florida state school?

No.

Post-Secondary tuition at Public Colleges and Universities in the State of Florida is only partially-subsidized by the State Government. Florida-Resident students pay a discounted rate compared to other domestic students, but they still pay.

Like many other states, the State of Florida does offer Financial Aid to it's students in the forms of grants, scholarships and loans. In addition, the State of Florida offers the Florida Prepaid College Plans, which allows Floridian Parents to prepay their child's tution at a Public College or University at a younger age, thus eliminating the need to pay at enrollment.

No...where did you hear that?

We have some of the lowest in-state tuition costs compared with other states. FSU is about $4500 (in state) a year for 30 credit hours.

I go the University of Florida for free using what's known as a Bright Futures scholarship in Florida. Most people at UF who are Florida residents have tuition paid this way since the requirements aren't very demanding (like a 1270 SAT, 100 service hours, and 3.5 weighted high school GPA I think).

Don't I wish.... (she says as she's trying to figure out where the money for summer classes is coming from)

Well I live in one of the most expensive states in the country...NJ. A coworker whos daughter is in the Disney college program told me that, but I didn't really believe it. I have a lot of family in Fl, and if it were true my daughter would be moving! She's in her second year now at our local community college, which is free for her because my husband works there.

My brother was a resident of CA back in the early nineties and went back to college, it was only $5 a credit for residents. I'm sure with this economy thats increased. Besides I don't have family there anymore.

Well thanks for the info, I knew that was too good to be true.

It's possible that your coworker's daughter has Bright Futures, the Florida scholarship that RockNRollerGator mentioned. With Bright Futures, if you qualify, you can get 100% of your tuition paid for.....as long as you go to Florida school...so maybe that's what they meant.
