Well, after much nagging and ear-bending (happy now Tony ;) ), the time has come to post my trip reports. You may find these trippies slightly more cynical and *****y than previous reports. This is not at all due to us not having a good time but largely down to the fact that I am currently trying to quit the evil weed again and I am finding my frustrations are manifesting themselves in my writing style :rotfl:

I really struggled to come up with a suitable title for this trip report. All my previous efforts have featured the famous Fred and Wilma prefix, together with such catchy suffixes as 'Honeymoon' (our first trip), 'Second Time Around' (an intriguing inference to the fact that this was our second trip) and the third in the trilogy 'And the Girls came Too' (the most recent trip report, featuring my teenage daughters). So, when it came to naming this report, as I say it was a struggle. Obviously, Fred and Wilma had to feature. As we were being accompanied by another couple, I did think about christening them Barney and Betty to keep in sync with the whole 'Flinstones' thing. Nah, too much of a mouthful. It could have been called the 'Mind the Fluff Tour' (I don't want to give away the storyline though so more about this later). As it was Fred's 40th Birthday, I really wanted to get the Words 'Fred' and 'Fortieth' in there but it didn't seem fair to disregard the fact that another of our party was celebrating a birthday while we were away too. So, while laying awake at 3 o'clock this morning telling myself I really, really didn't want a cigarette, it came to me in a blinding flash of inspiration. It was February and we had Fun. Hey, and Frolics begins with 'F' too so why not chuck that in somewhere. And therein was born the title of this latest literary masterpiece:- Fred, Wilma and Friends February Fun & Frolics. Pure genius - if I could bottle it, I'd be a millionaire you know :rotfl:

Shortly after Gary’s 39th birthday last year, I realised I really ought to do something special for his fortieth. I asked him what he’d like to do and he said ‘Go skiing’. What was that you said love? A week in Orlando? No problem :rolleyes1 Seriously, I do feel a bit mean but, hey, apparently it’s OK because we’re going skiing for my fortieth instead ;)

So, I had decided where. The when was easy enough – it had to be around Gary’s Birthday so leaving any time between the 7th and 12th of February would be good. Wondering what would make this trip a bit more out of the ordinary compared to previous trips, I came up with the idea of making it a real adults only holiday and inviting some friends to come with us. Enter Christine and Mark.

I met Christine almost 13 years ago when I was pregnant with Rhiannon and Sian was just 4 months old. Christine had just found out she was pregnant with her first baby. Her first words to me were ‘Haven’t you two got a telly?’ Not quite sure why I became friends with her really :rotfl: She is a northerner and says exactly what she thinks, which is hilarious most of the time and downright awkward at others. When we’re together, we laugh a lot - in fact, all the time. She is a cackler and I’m a snorter so, needless to say, Mark and Gary are in for a hell of a week!

Speaking of Mark, he is Christine's husband. He is a lovely, lovely man and a vast improvement on her first husband. He is the complete opposite of Christine – need I say more – and, as I discovered on this holiday, game for a laugh!!!

I had also asked Gary’s best friend, Mal, and his girlfriend Julia to join us. Unfortunately, they weren’t able to – something to do with Julia’s head being stuck too far up her own backside to go to Disney :rolleyes1

So, just the four of us it is then. Flights were booked with Virgin Atlantic, using Miles plus Money, flying out on Sunday 11th Feb and back on the 18th. That just left accommodation and car hire to arrange. Although I didn’t plan for us to visit any of the Disney parks on this trip (never say never though), the idea was to see what Disney had to offer in the way of nightlife, so ideally I wanted us to stay on or very near to Disney property. DVC seemed the perfect answer. I posted on the DIS, requesting a reservation for Sunday to Thursday, planning to move off-site for our last 2 nights. No sooner had I posted than someone replied and said he would be able to help me out. So, we had a reservation for two studios at Boardwalk Villas for the first 5 nights, I managed to arrange car hire through Dollar and I just had to book accommodation for the last 2 nights.

At this point the trip was still a surprise. Gary knew we were going away and I think he had a sneaky feeling we’d be going to Orlando but he had no idea where and who with. This changed in October when we were floating past the Boardwalk Villas on our Illuminations Cruise – I couldn’t help myself and blurted out that we would be staying there in February. OK, so now he knew the where but he still didn’t know about Mark and Christine.

Meanwhile, I set about arranging a couple of little extra surprises for while we were away and also booked Homewood Suites on American Way for the Friday and Saturday nights. All set and with only two weeks to go, Gary starts making comments about how he’s glad we never went away with friends as it must be really hard to be tied to other people. I start to panic, then smell a rat. At last (after he’s made me suffer for a few days), he admits that he knows that Christine and Mark are coming. Oh well, at least I’ve still got a couple of surprises up my sleeve…

Coming up...in depth introductions to the cast and a warning for all travellers!

I have been so looking forward to this trip report. The start has been great and I can't wait for more.

Good start Joh, can only agree with Gary about holidaying with friends - always a mistake I think;)

Great start to the report Joh. Looking foward to reading the rest esp about staying at the Broadwalk.

How does it work if you stay at a DVC place when your not a member? Do you buy someone else's points? :confused3

Claire, the Boardwalk was fabulous. Although we've just bought into DVC at Saratoga Springs, I will most certainly be wanting to stay there again. Yes, at the time we visited, we weren't members and had therefore rented points from a member. It worked really well, although I will admit I was nervous about hwether we woud arrive and find there was no reservation, and it was relatively cheap seeing as we only stayed Sunday night to Thursday night. For 2 studios for 5 nights it cost us $1210 ($121 per studio per night).

Phew! There was a moment when I thought Gary had let the cat out of the bag and you'd clocked that we're your surprise companions at Saratoga Springs on your fortieth. :teeth: Us and Bobby, of course.
