Freaking Out! DD sick, leaving Sat am

Hi all,

Thanks for all of the advice. I am trying not to be "selfish" as some suggest, that's why I'm asking for help. :confused3

I have considered rescheduling my trip, but don't even know how to go about this. I booked directly through Disney, we are staying at the poly with free dining. How would I even go about rescheduling? Will it even be possible. Thank you for all your good input and pixie dust.

I wish I didn't have experience with this subject but I do ... call Guest Services directly. I would just tell the WTC CM that answers that you have a last minute family emergency and need to speak to someone in Guest Services. I had to cancel literally the morning we were supposed to leave once because of a medical emergency and they were wonderful about it. They moved the package for me to another date and waived the change fee (it's $50-60).

I hope it doesn't come to that for you. Did you try your childrens' doctor yet?

I would seriously consider rescheduling your trip. My ds had this a few months ago and his twin sister got it approx. 5 days after he had it. I just don't think it would be fair to your children to put them in car seats and drive for such a long trip when they are not feeling well and if one of your other two get it when you are going down to Disney or are there they will be miserable as well. The virus made my kids very lethargic and they just wanted to lay around and they were very uncomfortable (and mine didn't even get the sores). I just don't think it's fair to push kids when they are ill or not feeling well. Hopefully, you can reschedule. Linda

Definately call and see if you can reschedule. I can't imagine trying to do Disney with one sick child, and worrying about 2 others.

If you do go, the ill child(ren) should be strolled everywhere, don't expect them to walk from one place to another, using energy that is difficult to replenish because it is difficult for them to eat.

Avoid soda pop and real cold stuff like ice cream.

When my DD had HF&m disease they had me alternate Tylenol and Motrin. One to reduce fever/pain and the other to reduce swelling/pain.

And they had a us mix a solution of 50% liquid Benadryl & 50% Mylanta. We then took cotton swabs and dipped it in the solution. Once the swab was wet we gently bathed our DD mouth/lips/gums with the solutions. It really did help!

Good Luck! I know it's hard to deal with a sick child....and to be traveling. Our DD is asthmatic and she is flared up right now...and we leave Thursday!

Thanks, Disers! I have decided to talk to the doctor tomorrow. My kids pediatrician is a big Disney freak like me and I'm going to ask her point blank what she would do. I'll keep you guys posted.

I've really appreciated reading your posts. Keep them coming. They're really offering me great advice and perspective. I just checked our calendar and there is really no reason that we couldn't go in the next month. I'm just wondering about the likelihood of rescheduling. Do you think we'd still get free dining? That's why we booked in Sept in the first place. We normally go in early Dec.

Another question, we have tix for MNSSHP on Sept. 22. Will they allow us to use them for another date? I know they're non-refundable. Any thoughts?

Thanks again!

My 10 year old came down with this in late June. The biggest part is that it is very painful. Call your pediatrician and ask for the formula for "Magic Mouthwash". It is equal parts Milk of Magnesia and Benedryl. Since your daughter is so young the amount I gave would be different. No one else came down with this (and she was in a children's production of Music Man Jr with 70 other kids) to our knowledge. Hope this helps. Just read the post above and it was Mylanta not MOM.

Oh yes, you can get this more than once, my three girls had it twice with in a span of about 2 months, it is easier the second time around.
Go directly to walmart, or some pharmacy, buy
genetian violet,
it is a liquid, and will turn your daughter mouth purple, but it works like a charm to help her feel better. We got qtips, and used them new everytime we put it in a new daughters mouth that way it would not spread that way.
It does not help the sores go away, but will help with the comfort level.
Be careful when you put it in her mouth, as it stains, and she will have a very purple mouth, but really it was the one thing that made my girls feel better!

My two daughters had this several weeks ago. They were really miserable for about 3 days. My kids are older 12 and 13 so they recovered fairly quickly but for a few days they just laid around and didn't want to eat. Neither one of them had very many mouth sores. I know even if we had been in Disney they would have just laid in bed. My 13 year old is hardly ever sick and she was the most miserable I've seen her in along time with the really high fever. Hope everything goes works out. We are leaving tomorrow night. We are coming from Alaska and have about 11 hrs of travel time. We will also be at the Polynesian and going to MNSSHP on the 22nd.

Joni317... I am so sorry about your misfortune. Having a sick child is never easy, add to that the Disney trip... I would feel stressed too.

I do suggest, as others have, to reschedule your trip. Even if your little one is past the contagious part, you don't know and won't know for a few more days if any one else in the family has gotten it. Traveling will ill children is not fun, nor is it good for the kids. Plus, it really isn't fair to expose everyone else you are in contact with. I know you wouldn't intentially infect someone else, but it is easy to do. If the baby is in a stroller and drops a toy, a person walking by picks it up and gives it back to you... you see where I'm going.

Years ago I had planned a vacation for my DD's. I was a single Mom at the time, money was tight, but had planned and saved for this trip. My youngest DD was in a day care that allowed you to take your child out for 1 week a year without paying for that week. (The rest of the year you paid if your child was there or not.) The day before we were supposed to go, when I went to pick up DD, I was told she had been exposed to measles. The little boy she had been playing with most of the day had started breaking out and was running a high fever. It appears as though this boys parents ignored the rule of "Don't send your child to school unless he is fever free for 24 hours." Needless to say, I had to cancel our trip. Couldn't take the chance.

I hope things work out for you! If you can postpone your trip, you will all enjoy it more if everyone is well! Wishing you lots of pixie dust!

My DD4 just got over coxsackie last week. All she would eat was Yogurt for a few days. Than I caught it and had a better understanding of her suffering. This was the first time I caught something from one of the kids and I can definately say that it hits adults harder. Five days later and I still can only drink Milk/Water.

Good Luck with whatever you decide. :sunny:

your best advice would come from the doctor. they would know best about what to do while you're on vacation and your little one is sick!

i hope she starts feeling better soon!

I don't think you would have any problems rescheduling, except you'll most likely miss out on free dining since you're at the tail-end of it now. I believe I had to reschedule once during the 5 day cancellation period but I wasn't assessed any penalty because I rescheduled at the same time and my deposit was simply transferred to the new booking. I think if you completely cancel, without rescheduling, you would lose your deposit. As for the tickets, we had tickets last year for MVMCP. On the way down, my son choked, he ended up in the hospital and was then transferred to another hospital in Orlando. By the time we were released, the party had already started and we were too exhausted to go. Disney refunded our tickets and we ended up just going in MK the next day instead of doing MVMCP.

We're leaving on the 23rd and are taking my dd5, ds2 and nephew4. My dd came down with rotavirus about a week and a half ago, then my ds got it last week, and it has now hit my nephew. It's not extremely contagious but obviously they're getting it from each other so we are trying to limit their interaction. We're all hoping it will be cleared up before the trip because, like you, we would hate to cancel but we don't want to take sick kids on the trip either.

Good luck, and I hope she's feeling better soon.

Ot: Rotavirus is pretty contagious! The virus can live on hard surfaces for a really long time and the only way to get rid of it is to use a disinfectant like bleach or something. I would make extra sure that your kiddos are good and over this before taking them in the FL sun. My dd and one of her friends had it when they were about 2/3. Every time we would think that they were over it, back it came. I can't tell you how frustrating it was. We both ended up out in public several times with a kid covered in diarhea! I am talking about 3 weeks after the first signs. It is really nasty stuff!

I agree don't take kids sick kids with rotavirus to Disney until they are completely recovered and then some. It is very contagious and a complete vacation ruiner for you and possibly alot of others at Disney. That said alot of people bring sick kids to Disney and it's wrong IMO. I had a bad stomach a week before I left but it turned out to be planning stress and having to pack 4 people for Disney and bring Dogs to kennel and all the stress. Never got sick just pain in stomach luckily. If you think your kids are going to have a miserable time then reschedule. It would be a hard trip with sick kids especially driving 15 hours. :goodvibes

We had Rotavirus in the house for a month once. We just couldn't stop it. I hate it when people don't take reasonable care not to share illnesses. I know that mistakes happen, and some are contagious with no other symptoms, but sometimes it is just plain selfishness.

Help! My dd19 months was just diagnosed this morning with hand, foot and mouth disease in her throat. Her throat is covered with blisters and she will barely eat anything. Because it's a virus, there's not treatment except for Motrin to bring fever down and reduce pain. The thing supposedly lasts 7 to 10 days. We leave Sat. morning at 4 am. We're driving 15 hours from Indiana. I also have a 5 year old and a 3 1/2 year old, who apparently are very succeptible, since the virus is so contagious. I am freaking out! Any advice? Any suggestions? :sad2:

I would call the Dr. and ask what they think. My sister's dd6 just came down with this. Both of our families are going to DW Tuesday and she was freaking out about her 10yo getting it. She is keeping them apart as best as she can. I just called her and she has a sore throat today. I will be avoiding her family at DW if I think that there is even a chance that they are carrying it. She got a note home from school about it yesterday and it said that it could be contagous for 2 weeks, so I am not even sure if you should go Saturday or not. It would really stink to be in DW and have your other 2 come down with it.

FLAME THREAD READ WITH CARE. NOT TRYING TO BE MEAN, BUT I AM BEING TRUTHFUL! NOT EVERYONE IS GOING TO LIKE MY DRY AND CUT WAY OF LOOKING AT THIS. I DONT SUGAR COAT ANYTHING.

I know everyone works hard for their vacations. But IMHO I think that if your children are still contagious you should not go to Disney. This is why we get trip insurance.

I speak from exp. When we went to Disney in Dec 2004, our daughter got very ill 5 days after our trip. She was exposed to someone else's sick child. Her Pedi told me that she had been exposed at Disney. I can not believe that other Responsible parents let their sick children go on a trip. 1st of all a sick child is not in a good mood, and all they want is their bed. 2nd a sick child does not need to be spreading their germs to other healthy kids. A common cold, that is one thing, but HFMD come on. My daughter had to be hospitalized for 5 days with Rota, and RSV.

We always use hand sanitizer and clorox wipes, but a parent can not control ever thing a child comes in contact with.

It just burns me up :furious: to know that their are parents out their taking really sick kids places to spread it to healthy children.

I have a right to vent! :furious: Once you spend 5 days in the hospital with your precious baby, watching them poke her with needles, and wake her up evertime she falls asleep, you too will take a stand on this. She had tubes sticking out of her in all places, and had to be in a O2 tent. Not to mention in a sterile room with a sign on the door saying she was highly contagious :furious: My child could not drink or eat.... She also had it coming out both ends........ Do you think I was happy? Now here is the thing I want to know---- What poor child's parent had their kid at Disney on DEATH's door? Cause my child was close.

So, if you must go please do the responsible thing and put a sign on that lets people know.

I am sorry that you are going through this but I think I would stay home, If you can reschedule with out too much trouble. I have been on vacation before when I was sick (strep throat) and with others who had the flu, let me tell you it is not pleasant. Not only is the ill person down and out, but everyone else suffers as well and nobody really enjoys the vacation. So call Disney, they are VERY helpful explain what is going on, and reschedule for when your whole family can enjoy the trip.

If it were me i'd call disney explain what has happened see if you could reschedule the trip as you wouldn't want the baby to be miserable on the trip and plus to know its contagious then let the baby and your children who may have it but aren't showing symptoms yet go and be close to others and risk spreading it to others isn't responsible.

If your children had this and the choice was to go to school or stay home i'm sure the school and yourself would see that keeping the child home was the smart thing to do for everyone involved. Same thing applies here.

Don't forget about new toothbrushes for everybody in the house just in case anything is incubating.

Lots of OJ & vitamins for anyone not infected to boost immunities.

Lots of handwashing & Purell.

Don't forget to launder the baby's things seperately from the rest of the family. Clothes, sheets, washcloths & bath towels.

Lysol everything.

Good luck ! :grouphug:
