FREAKING OUT - adult tooth coming in at the wrong place!! UPDATE

My DD5 lost her tooth NEXT to her top middle tooth over the summer. They said it would be awhile before it came in, probably a couple of years. Anyway, she's lost a total of 4 teeth, the one on top and 3 on the bottom. Her top middle teeth are a little loose.

The one next to the empty spot is the most loose (not loose enough to pull out) and instead of getting super loose it's slowly starting to stick out further and further. It's being pushed forward.

She had a tooth start to come in, in the empty space next to it. We assumed it was that tooth. It's not, it's her middle tooth!!! Now it's coming in off to the side and I am absolutely freaking out!!! I'm going to call the dentist on Monday but obviously, no matter what, the tooth is coming in wrong.

I'm so upset. Anyone else ever have this happen?

I had a tooth removed as a kid and my adult tooth would have done the same thing. Long story short they attached a chain to my tooth and pulled it over into the proper spot. This may or may not be possible for your DD. If not she can always have the adult tooth removed and have an implant done as she ages. HTH

This child is just ALWAYS going to have tooth issues. When she was 2 she fell and broke the top middle ones. All this time, I've worried that the adult tooth would be discolored or something. Well, here it is a beautiful shiny new tooth coming in at the wrong location!!! I feel like we just can't get a break!

And her tooth that's broken and jagged is just getting pushed further out towards the front instead of falling out! GRRRRRRRR!!!!!

Probably looking at year and years of orthodontics, but every kid gets all that anyways, it seems!

I had my adult canine tooth come in over the tooth next to it (the tooth in between the front ones and the canine/fang tooth - sorry forget what's it called!). My canine protruded at a 45 degree angle and looked hideous - I had trouble closing my mouth over it! But my parents were "social darwinist" as I call them - it was my problem, if I wanted it fixed I needed to find a way, etc. Not their problem or responsibility. I neeed to learn to live with it, they said. Finally only had it fixed in my 30's with surgery and years of braces and tons of appliances. Wish I had it done WAY sooner - many lost years in there where I could have dated more or advanced up the career ladder if I had a better appearance.

Hopefully the problem won't be as bad as it looks now!

I agree that you and your DD should see a dentist (and then likely a specialist, orthodontist, whatever is necessary). However, seek out dental schools in your area. My mom doesn't have any canine teeth and for some reason, two of my sister's kids inherited this trait. And while my mom didn't need braces or anything, my sister's kids' teeth were definitely needing something. Since dental care can be pricey and her dental plan didn't cover a lot, she took them to a dental college. The problem was unique enough that most of the students haven't ever seen it, so they are treating the kids there and it's not costing my sister an arm and a leg. It sounds like your DD's problem might be something just as unique. Can't hurt to check into it!

First, calm down, this is VERY common and can be fixed. I had a friend that never lost a single babytooth and ALL of her adult teeth grew in behind her babyteeth. She eventually had to have surgery but she is over 40 now and has a lovely set of teeth.

Happened to my son too. The dentist tugged on the baby tooth that was being pushed forward (it didn't feel loose to me) and it popped right out. Then the adult tooth kept growing where it was intended to once it had the space. End result: nice even straight teeth, never any braces necessary. His teeth may not have been on the same schedule as most people in the order they were lost, but it never mattered.

Don't be too upset until you see what the dentist says. I know, easier said than done.

Thanks everyone. I feel a lot better now. I'm just taking a deep breath and focusing on the fact that the new tooth wasn't damaged by the fall way back when she was two. We're going to call the dentist on Monday and I'm going to ask them to pull it out. I may even have them pull the one next to it, that's loose too!

I'm headed to the dentist with her this morning in about 15 min. She's a nervous wreck! But yesterday, she actually fell and hit that tooth and it was bleeding and all. I wish it had just knocked it out! Poor thing!

Anyway, we're off to the dentist!!! I'll update you. I'm PRAYING they pull her tooth!!!

Good luck. my 9 1/2yo still hasnt lost her 2 top front teeth. They are like little nubs now compared toll of her adult teeth round it. She goes to the ortho in February. Thankfully I only have 1 payment left on my 16yos braces.

Take comfort in the fact she has all her teeth.

My kids are missing teeth, like they do not exist thanks to DH's genetics.

My oldest was able to get them repaired via orthodontics, they pulled them forward.

My 12yodd is not going to be so lucky.
She is going to need major work which includes tooth implants and a frenectomy.

I've learned not to worry too much about teeth. My DD has wonky teeth. As a matter of fact, I believe she has 1 more baby tooth left and she's 14! I was the same way though but I kept getting cavities in the baby teeth in Junior High so the dentist would yank them out. Who knows how old I would have been.

In my DD's case she had one tooth come in completely sideways! It's something I didn't even think was physically possible to happen. When asked the dentist, he said it might turn on it's own once the other teeth came out. It never did, it stayed like that for a year, so we had to do the Phase I orthodontist stuff. On her top teeth only.

She is now ready for phase 2. They were waiting for her molars to come in and her last check-up they were *finally* there or at least broke through the gums.

She also had the adult teeth come in behind the baby teeth, etc...

Then there is her brother with rather straight teeth naturally! I'm amazed as I didn't think people had teeth that straight naturally. His only problem is he has a slight gap between his 2 top teeth. In his case, I want to wait until he has all his adult teeth in because according to the dentist that might just close the gap naturally, once they all push their way in. It's not a HUGE gap but enough.

We were in and out of the dentist in about 15 minutes. She did GREAT!! The tooth is HISTORY!!!! Thank God! Since she fell just before turning 2 we have been counting down until that tooth came out.

She can actually close her mouth all the way without that broken too protruding through her lips!! The Dr didn't seem too concerned about where the new tooth is so I guess we'll just keep an eye on it and see what happens. There's not a lot we can do about it at this point anyway.

I'm just so thrilled that it's finally GONE!!!!

Other than you now, I had never ever heard of a tooth coming in like that. I have not heard of anyone else either. When I tell people they thought I meant it came in a bit crooked & I would say NO...it came in totally sideways!! The dentist was eh, it happens and didn't seem to think it too odd though.

How in the world it broke through the gums like that I have no idea but she had the phase I done and they got it turned correctly, along with adding some space for her adult teeth as she has small mouth. They had estimated 18 months for it to be complete but it was closer to 24 months due to her small teeth size/small mouth they had to do the adjustments in smaller increments. Luckily, there is no extra charge! They gave you the full cost up front and no matter how long it took, that was the cost.

BOth my DDs have teeth issues.

Older one had several teeth come in sideways. She just got out of braces this month and she looks FANTASTIC!! She was in for 24 months, and it wasn't bad, really.

(by which I mean, that braces today are better than the ones I wore as a kid 30 years ago, and she was never really in pain and thought having them was "cool." I can think of more fun ways to spend $4k, though

Younger DD has enamel issues. Several of her baby teeth came in with NO enamel and we had to brush her teeth every time she nursed, until we could get them capped. Her adult teeth have come in with normal enamel, thank goodness. She she went into braces the same day her sister got hers off. She doesn't have sideways teeth, though, so hers are only $3k, and will take only 18 months. yay.

DOn't worry, OP, I'm sure your DD will end up with a beautiful smile!

Ooh, I almost forgot- my brother had to have ALL his baby teeth pulled at the dentist. None of them ever came out on their own. The new tooth would come in behind it. It would come forward after the baby tooth was pulled. Also, he had a tooth come in right in the middle of the roof of his mouth. I remember mom being REALLY freaked about that, because he had to have oral surgery to have it removed. But he's fine now, too
