Framing and matting question?

Hi there!

I just purchased a print that is 20X30 in size and I want to frame and matte it.

What size frame would I get for a print that is 20X30 & are there different matting sizes?

Is it just a 20X30 frame? I'm thinking since I want to matte it, maybe the frame should be bigger?

Since you want to matte it, you will need a bigger frame size. I've never had anything professionally framed and matted but when I matte my own pieces, I generally do a 2inch matte. So it would be a 24x34 frame in that case. If you take it to a framer they can help you more with the matte sizes.

Thank you! I will try those sizes. I really don't want to take it to a framer because I've heard professional framing is quite expensive, especially for a print this size. So, I'm trying to do it myself

I'm sorry, I really do not know frame sizes, but what I would do is find a frame that I like, about 2" bigger all around the poster, or as close as you can get to your ideal finished size. Then I would go to a faming shop (or even michaels -they do framing) and have them just cut the mat for you.

It is really difficult to cut mats without the proper tools.

Yes professional framing can be quite expensive, but it is worth it if the print is valuable. If you have a Michaels near you, wait until a 50% or 60% off all custom framing comes out in the Sunday paper.

If its just a poster quality-Michael's or Hobby Lobby have inexpensive black poster frame set up-but I thinks it has plexiglass instead of real glass.

It is sort of valuable-it's a 1987 limited edition Charles Boyer print that was issued to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Snow White I got an amazing deal on it on Ebay!!

I looked into custom framing but yikes it would be over $300! I cannot fathom spending that much money!! I did find a frame at Michaels today that was decently priced and they said it would be $40 to cut the matting for me. Do you think that would be enough to keep the print safe? I am willing to spend up to $100 on the framing and that's about what it would come to if they custom cut the matte and I bought the frame.

Anything of value needs to be museum mounted using all acid free products. What kind of glass did the frame have? Where are you going to hang it?

Sorry to ask so many questions but there is so much to framing in order to keep your print safe.

Would the $300 be without a Michael's coupon?

My DS11 did a wonderful piece of artwork this past year in fifth grade. We had it professional matted and framed because it was an odd size. It cost quite a bit ($100) but it was worth every penny, as I consider it to be an heirloom!

Anyway, they did a 2" mat on it...it looks great!
