I was diagnosed with walking pneumonia about a week ago and while I have started feeling a little better I have continued to have a terrible cough. This afternoon I had a particularly bad coughing fit and I started to feel a lot of pain on my left side near my ribs. The area has continued to hurt all evening and the pain is really bad when I cough or move certain ways. I am afraid that I fractured my rib. Has anyone else had this happen?

I haven't had it happen to me but I do know it's possible. I'd call your dr about it. Hope you feel better soon.

It's more likely that you pulled a muscle but check with your doctor. Good luck!!:flower3:

I will call my doctor tomorrow morning. I already thought I had pulled every muscle in my torso area earlier this week. This pain is definitely worse than the pain I had been feeling. :sad2:

Not to scare you, but this happened to my mom so I took her to the ER and she was diagnosed as having a blockage between her rib and lung. The sinus/mucus dripped down there and hardened to form an abcess and she had to have thoracic surgery to clear it out and ended up being in the hospital for 10 days!

The only good thing that came of that is that, since she was only expecting to be in the hospital overnight for a bruised rib, she decline the nicotine patch and came out of the hospital and never smoked again.

I highly recommend going to get checked immediately just to rule out any possibilities of anything like that!

Happened to me in early November. It hurt until a couple of weeks ago. I should have had it checked out, but I didn't have health insurance. :(

That same thing happened to me. I had walking pneumonia and a really bad cough a few years ago. At one point I started coughing and I felt almost a snap in my rib cage (kind like a rubber band snapping sound) It hurt and I felt it more as I moved certain ways and breathed but if I stayed still it was ok. I went to the Doctor about a week later of it still hurting and my Dr. was like " you probably just pulled a muscle" I told him that it was a diff. pain that I have ever felt and just had a hunch something was wrong. He was skeptical of giving me an x-ray and took him mabout 20 minutes to decide to give me one. Well once he did he walks out and says " I guess you were right!" You fractured your rib!!! He told me there was nothing that I could really take but some pain pills and told me not to lift anything for a few weeks. I hope you feel better

I had a coughing related injury when I had double lung pneumonia some years back. Basically, I coughed for so many weeks and so frequently that the cartilage seperated from my rib cage on the right side. I did have it checked out by my doc. and after that, treated it by wrapping up with ace bandages, which made coughing less painful. It took about three-four weeks to heal.

You can crack a rib coughing with pneumonia though, so be sure to go in and have it checked. Worst case, you could have broken a rib and end up puncturing your lung. So, go to the doctor! :)

I never knew you could crack a rib from coughing! I have had pneumonia several times. Twice, I had symptoms similar to what you described, and ended up back at the Dr. Turned out the antibiotics hadn't kicked it, and I needed something stronger both times.

Whatever it is, it's worth checking out. Pneumonia is a very serious illness.

Hope you feel better!

Most likely that is what it is. DH had bronchitis back in December and didn't know it. He also had coughing fits that you had described. It got so bad that he decided to go upstairs to the E.R. to get checked out. He also thought that he fractured a rib. The results came back and it was found that he had bronchitis back in December and that it was gone. However, they did find that he had pulled his chest muscle.

Thankfully the coughs aren't as bad as they were, but it will take awhile before his chest muscle fully heals.
