My DH, DD and myself are planning our July vacation...DH can't do SM and the like and won't do another attraction w/o us...I can't quite figure out what to do about his FP+ for that time frame....if I schedule him for a FP on SM will they scan it at the entrance to the ride (as if he was going on) thus freeing us up to get a 4th FP? Or do I need to try and have him do one attraction that he can do w/o DD and myself to keep us all on track with our FP...

Thanks!!!

He doesn't actually need to ride/enter the attractions FP+ return queue, that FP+ selection can be allowed to expire and still be able to get additional FP+ selections (subject to availability).

After you use all of the initial FastPass+ experiences on the day of your visit (or your arrival windows have passed), you can select one additional FastPass+ experience to use that same day (based on availability). The additional FastPass+ experience is a rolling FastPass+ experience—each time you use an additional FastPass+ experience, you can select a new one.

Additional FastPass+ selections must be made at a FastPass+ kiosk within the same park as the FastPass+ experience that you wish to select, and they can be made at a different park from your previous selections.

True.

But, isn't it true that your 4th FP+ won't open up until either you've ridden your third or the window for your third expires? In that case, if you use the 3rd FP you will be able to book the 4th FP slightly earlier than if you leave the 3rd FP unused.

Example: your third FP is booked with a window 2pm-3pm. If you use it to ride right at 2pm and are done with the ride at 2:10, then you can book your fourth FP at 2:10. But, if you choose not to use the 3rd FP, then you won't be able to book your 4th until 3pm.

Is that correct?

That's my understanding. The OP could make Space Mountain their first or second FP+ selection and then it wouldn't matter.
