FP+ Question - missed window

I've read the FAQ and watched the little video about FP+ and they talk about how you most likely won't get in to an attraction if you missed your window unless it happens to still be available (unlikely).

My question is, since you're limited to only 3 FP+ per day, if you miss one, does the system know that you missed it and let you do something else or are you just out of luck?

I understand that missing your slot means no one else got to use it either, kind of like the dining reservations, I just want to know if anyone has experienced this yet.

If you are running late or know that you will miss your time, you can change your time or select a new ride on your smart phone or at guest services but I doubt it will award you another free choice.

And of course we all know the one tiny little detail there is that it is all "subject to availability". That is the one piece that will make or break this.

FWIW........ I generally don't feel bad for people who miss a FP slot. We all know the rules, and that's just the deal. But if the limit stays at 3, and there are no replacement headliner spots, then the stakes do get a lot higher. If I'm seated late for an ADR and it runs unreasonably late, you can bet I'm going to be having a discussion with whoever can fix my FP.

I had made one last week and then the stand by line was so short I didn't use it. later I was able to use the kiosk to change it to another FP+.

Ok, great! I plan on canceling them if I know I am not going to use them so that someone else can use the slot (if it works that way), but it's still good to know how it works in the event that I cannot do that.

I asked a CM if it would work and she suggested trying to switch it for another FP+ before the "window" closed for the one I was not using. She agreed it would be silly to use FP+ when the Stand by line was so short. even easier with a smartphone which I don't have; had to find a kiosk.

FYI- You can't just cancel one. You have to cancel all 3 for the day or none. We discovered that when we tried to cancel ones were weren't going to make so someone else could use the slot during our trip-- and also pre-trip when we only wanted 2 at AK, and the system made us have 3. All you can do is change the one you aren't going to make or don't want for a different time or attraction- assuming MDE is working in the parks which is rarely was when we were there- and that other times are available which even if MDE worked they rarely were for any of the major attractions when we were there. For example- it told me there were no other available times for the entire day for Star Tours when we weren't going to make our time- I was able to walk to the ride and pull a FP for 45 minutes later. If you aren't going to use one at all, if MDE is working, you might be able to change it out for a ride that doesn't usually need a FP so that maybe the other slot will open up for someone.

From another thread about trying to schedule a FP+ for MSEP:

One other thing is that when they do get offered (which I think was just a couple of weeks before our October trip), they will not show up on your list as available unless one of your 3 FP+ is in that same time slot. So, to get it to show up, I had to move one of our FP+ times to right around parade time, and then it would show up and I could change the attraction to the parades.

This FP+ reservation system is a very, very bad design.
Not intuitive or user friendly.
