FP+ late day strategy wasn't the best for us

Just some observations from our recent trip (1/1 to 1/7) on the FP+ bookings later in the evening.

I'd read it was the best strategy to do rope drop in the mornings and schedule the 3 FP+ for the evenings when the parks were likely fuller and standbys much longer than first thing in the morning.

We actually did a mix and moved some other things around on the fly while we were there, but it did seem like every FP+ line we encountered -- waiting just to scan in -- all happened at night, as though everyone else is trying the same strategy causing a good bit of lag to get through. None of the waits were comparable to the long standby times, though, and the longest we waited was Sunday night 1/5 for Toy Story. That FP line was out the building, down the block, and around the corner near the bathrooms and the area where you can currently take in the Jack Sparrow movie stuff. (And this was when it was in the 40s and there was next to no one at the 10:00 Fantasmic show and hour later.) It took us half an hour to get on the ride, twenty of those getting to the door to scan. Glad we didn't wait until the last few minutes of our window to try and hop in!

Most of the evening lines were more on par with what you see here, as we waited to scan through to Everest.

It seems that some CMs are watching for anyone with Magic Bands to approach legacy FP machines. DH got scolded by a CM at Tower of Terror and was told he could not pull old FP with our room keys because it wasn't fair to all the other guests. My daughter, who hadn't been there at the reprimand, snapped her band off, grabbed the room keys, walked around to the machines and got them anyway. Sorry, the window is closing, she hates elevators, and she wanted to boys to go ride so we could do Animation Academy without any complaints.

The only other time we utilized the old FP was on our first morning at Studios. We got there around 9:30 and pulled the nighttime FPs then. I liked that the CM made sure to point out this was going to be for 9:30 PM -- not right now! And seemed relieved when I didn't look surprised or act outraged.

Any time we used our FP+ for mornings, there was never any line at all to scan in that we encountered. Every evening FP+ typically did have a short wait and seemingly a lot more people trying to utilize their bands and slowing up the movement. Not sure how we kept running into that, since I would think you'd have a general number allotted for each hour of the day?

Just curious. YMMV

That point is becoming moot, anyway.

Exactly -- seemed like a CM was just looking for an argument. I watched many folks wearing bands come up and pull FP-s without any issue.

It was, we knew, our last time to ever use the machines. Bittersweet. We started going in 2000 when only a few rides had the machines installed. Even in 2002 we found ourselves explaining to a lot of people that, no, it didn't cost anything to use them.

I agree about the possibility of CM's pushing their personal agenda.

By "moot," I mean that there are now only two of the parks that even offer FP-, and those, also, may dry up within the next couple of weeks.

Thanks for the picture of the CM holding up the "FASTPASS RETURN" sign as proof that Bigfoot really does exist :)

It looks like Standby for EE had a posted wait time of 30 minutes - do you know how long the FP line took at that time?

Maybe five minutes, max, to get up to the scanners. After that, total walk-on through the FP short queue.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm starting to re-think our strategy based on what I've been following on the threads. I think we will try to stick with rope drop but schedule our FP+ for early afternoon instead of hopping to a a different park and using them later afternoon/evening. So we'd do early counter service lunch, use FP+, short break at resort maybe and try for early dinner ADR and then hopefully get back out to a park for the evening entertainment.

Somehow I don't think it's working quite how they envisioned if a CM has to stand at the end of the line holding a "FP Return" sign.

We have never really done attractions in the evening, we mostly have TS dinner and enjoy evening entertainment with a ride or 2 maybe. So, I scheduled our FP+ for late mornining/early afternoon before our breaks in keeping with our traditional touring strategies. Looks like that was a good plan.

What this tells me more than anything is not to plan on doing any evening standby rides. With FP getting priority, the SB lines probably aren't moving much. The best plan would be to head back to the resort and rest up for the next morning's rope drop.

Which reminds me..... I still need to email Disney about rescheduling the evening entertainment since I can't be there for it. It's only fair.

That wouldnt be hyperbole now, would it?

Yes. That was hyperbole (sort of). And you will notice it didn't involve a single fact or figure. In fact, I could have gone so far as to add one of these ;)

Interestingly enough is that when you first said you use hyperbole a lot and it was an effective tool, you never qualified that hyperbole is not to be used when talking about facts & figures.

I don't really think a half hour SB time for EE is that bad. Plus the marathon/half marathon was this weekend so likely a lot of ppl reserved late FP+ times. :)

Oh I'm sorry I see you trip was 1/1 through 1/7. I retract my marathon statement.

That's exactly what we do. Looking at our schedule for May, I can't even find one evening to plan for FPs. :)

I found that scheduling FP+ slots between 11 and 1 worked best for us. We would then head back to the resort for a break and come back to the parks for dinner and evening stuff. We didn't really have time to fit in rides, let alone 3 of them spread out over a couple hours, at night. We did dinner, a ride or two, then fireworks. Even with SB lines, we found we could do things like Muppets, the Gran Fiesta Tour, or Philharmagic without a wait in the evenings.

As someone who has always gone to WDW in the summer, I found it mildly amusing to see people wearing coats in line for TSM and EE.

Nice pics.
