I am hopefully leaving for Disney on Wed.
Can somebody please explain the rules that I need to know on how to use a FP and also what is a standby line?

Hi Cdmom. You're so lucky you'll be at WDW soon! (I just got back but I always want to go again!)

FP can be used by anyone with a ticket to get into the park. When you enter the park, grab a park map. It'll list all of the rides in that park eligible for Fast Pass. When you get to the queue area of the ride, you'll see an overhead sign that lists the return time for FP's currently being given out. For example, you may go over to Splash Mountain around 10:00 am and the Fast Pass return time will say "11:15-12:15." This means that if you get a fast pass for that attraction right now, you'll be able to return between 11:15 and 12:15 and go through the fast pass line. Depending on the ride, this will mean a 5-10 minute wait.

To get the FP, you enter your park ticket into the machine. Your ticket will pop back out as will your FP, which will have the return time on it, as well as the time that you can get another FP. This is probably the most confusing part. In general, once you get an FP, you cannot get another one until the time for the first one starts. Staying with my example from above, you would not be able to get another FP for any other FP ride until 11:20 (5 minutes after the start time). However, if that FP is more than 2 hours away, you will be able to get another FP in two hours. For example, it's 10:00 am. You get a FP for Test Track for 1:30-2:30. You will be able to get another FP at 12:00.

The standby line is the regular line. It's the same line that has always been there for years and years. They just call it the standby line to differentiate it from the Fast Pass line. You will see a posted wait time at all rides (FP or not) for the standby line.

One other thing to note, each person that wants to ride and be in the FP line will have to get a FP.

Hope that helped.

An exception to this rule is that children who are too young to need a park admission ticket also do not need a Fastpass in order to ride with the people in their group. (Makes sense, since you need an admission ticket to get the FP!)

make sure that after you get your fastpass, you check the time that you will be able to get another one... it can vary wildly... also, some popular rides (i.e. test track, splash mountain, big thunder) will run out of fastpasses well before the park closes... i saw two three rides that had no fastpasses left at 3 o'clock... again, that varies from day to day... i would also plan on people standing in a line for ride that you can't fastpass while you send a runner to get fastpasses... they then just catch-up to the group in line....

Hey guys,
Longtime lurker, first time posting. I'll begin by apologizing in advance for such a dumb question but here goes. On EE days, can you obtain a fasspass during that first hour or do they start when regular parks hours begin? No real biggy, just curious. This board is awesome and I send everyone here for the latest and greatest on Disney. I cannot thank you enough for a great forum. We'll be in the World in late April...with war, without. Thanks

the fastpass terminals for rides were open during EE... the trrick is to get the passes while in line for ride that has no fastpass (or qa fastpass ride that currently has a short wait)... this was a real coup (sp?), during EE it allowed us to hit fantasyland and ride snow white, pooh, peter pan, dumbo, haunted mansion, small world all in the first hour and a half that the park was open... the rest of the day we continued our trick... we then fastpassed splash mountain while in line for POC... repeated the process with BTMRR while in line for jungle cruise... and did the same for buzz light year while in line for speedway... and space mountain while in line for goofy 's barnstormer... it really worked well (i being the persom who got all of those fastpasses was quite worn out by the end of the day)

No FastPass thread is complete without a big Warning:

When utilizing FastPass always always ALWAYS remember to grab your park ticket back out of the machine as well as the fast pass ticket.

Thanks, you guys are the greatest!!!! Just curioous as how to plan our strategy during that first hour. Thanks also about the reminder to get your ticket after your fastpass prints. Keep up the good threads, always helpful!!!
