Four Months of Disney Dining! Final Updates 5/18

Mom is here! We had plans to go to Epcot for lunch, since we have dinner ressies there, but of course the Epcot bus pulled up when we were still all the way across the parking lot, and there was no way we were running to catch it. So we thought we'd wait for the next Epcot bus, but the next one to come was for Animal Kingdom. Since I get 20% off counter service there, I suggested we hop on that bus and just eat there instead. So we did.

Our lunch choice was Flame Tree Barbecue. We decided to split the 1/2 Slab St. Louis Ribs with coleslaw and baked beans. Mom ordered a Coke, I chose a side of fries and a sweet tea. While it took a little while to order (the computers froze), it didn't take long for the food to show up. I lead Mom back to the same pavilion I ate in last time, with the view of Everest.

The whole thing was empty, except for two birds (I live here and still have no idea what they are-the white ones with the pink feet). We did not get any barbecue sauce and didn't really need it. The ribs were good, if a little messy. The coleslaw was fine, but I'm undecided on the beans. The fries were not quite crispy and a teeny bit salty, but they were warm and not altogether bad.

I think Mom liked it and would eat here again. I moved our Rose & Crown reservation back an hour so we could nap, so look for that review later tonight or tomorrow!

Our dinner ADR was originally for 4:45pm, but after a change in plans, I was able to cancel and re-book for 5:35pm just a few hours before the ADR. We arrived at the check in podium shortly before our time and waited briefly to check in and be given our pager. It went off a few minutes later and we were led inside to a table next to the fireplace.

Our server was Andrea from Ireland and she was awesome and helpful, even going to make sure that my cast member dining discount would be accepted. Four our drinks I chose a Sprite and Mom ordered water; we decided to share the Shepherd's Pie. After Andrea had taken our drink and entree orders, she brought out the drinks, and -SURPRISE- free bread!
DSCN1376.JPG

It was warm, crispy on the outside but soft inside, and just all around wonderful.

Not too long after, the Shepherd's Pie appeared. It didn't look like there was a lot when she first brought it:
DSCN1378.JPG

(Sorry about the glare, my camera doesn't particularly like white dishes). But as Mom scooped...and scooped...and scooped some onto my plate, we discovered that there was a heck of a lot more than originally thought.
DSCN1381.JPG

And it was really good and very filling! I'm definitely a meat and potatoes girl, so this made me quite happy. Only minor complaint is that while mushrooms are listed on the description, it doesn't say that they are whole baby mushrooms. I don't really like mushrooms anyway, and it seemed that nearly all of them were in the half that I ate.

For dessert, we had two options in mind, but didn't know what one of them was: The Bakewell Tart. Andrea explained that it's an almond/marzipan base with a layer of frosting on top and a layer of raspberry jam beneath, then covered with cherry currant-I think that was the gist, anyway. We asked her if she preferred that or the Sticky Toffee Pudding, and she said the pudding is her favorite and she'd eat it every day if she could, so that's what we went with.

It came out shortly after we ordered and it was a little bit on the small side, but very rich. The sauce was amazing, and the overall dish reminded us of the Maple Butter Blondie we get at Applebee's, one of our favorite desserts. It was so warm and good that we polished it off in no time!
DSCN1383.JPG

With my 20% discount and the automatic 18% gratuity because of the discount, the total was about $28. I feel it was money well spent. The service and atmosphere were friendly and the food was great-better than I was expecting, honestly, after seeing some average reviews. But I can definitely give this a 9/10 and recommend it to others!

Today I spent some time at Animal Kingdom and Hollywood Studios. I was at AK for lunch and was pondering eating locations, finally deciding on the Yak & Yeti CS location. This was around 12:30, and the lines were long-ish considering that 3 registers were open. Eventually I made it to the front, where I was immediately asked if I would be using the dining plan. No, but is there a CM discount? No, there isn't. Of course not, because every other CS location in the park has one. :confused3

Anyway, I ordered the Honey Chicken and a Banana Pudding. I recall mango pie being on the menu several years ago at both the CS and the TS locations, but the mango pie was gone. When my order was ready, I went around the back of the building and grabbed a table that two people were just vacating. It was directly in the sun, but next to this lovely fountain.
DSCN1323.JPG

The honey chicken was described as having broccoli, carrots, honey sauce, and rice, but I found no evidence of carrots.
DSCN1321.JPG

It was really a very good dish. I ate all the broccoli and all but one piece of chicken, however, there was way too much rice for me to even contemplating finishing it-it was a hot day and this was kind of a heavy dish.

So I moved on to the banana pudding. Oh my God it was amazing. :worship:It had a Vanilla Wafer on top, and a crumbled crust underneath. The pudding was delicious and there were two chunks of real banana in it as well. So good. I'd go back again just for that.
DSCN1322.JPG

Overall, I do recommend this place, and I'm excited to try the TS next week!

Glad to see a good review of this place ( havent seen too much about it lately and last year people seemed to really rave about it). We were planning to do lunch there in June (FT out of the question because we dont like ribs or do chicken on the bone).

Cafe Rix Breakfast 2/10
Thursday night upon our return from Epcot, we stopped at Cafe Rix to pick up breakfast for the next morning. Mom got a sticky bun with nuts and I chose a cheese danish and apple juice.
DSCN1391.JPG

It was a Disney cheese danish, and you just can't go wrong with those, so no complaints. Mom liked her sticky bun and she actually ordered another one for breakfast the next day.

Starring Rolls Snack 2/10
After an hour at DHS on Thursday, I was ready for a snack, so I went to Starring Rolls. I took pictures of all the baked goods on display.

I wasn't terribly hungry, so I chose the Strawberry Parfait.
DSCN1418.JPG

It was a bit disappointing. The custard part was good, but the strawberries were of the frozen variety and they were not thawed very much. I might go back for something else sometime, but I don't know if I'd get that again.

Sci-Fi Dine In Theater Lunch 2/10
Our lunch ADR was for 11:20am and we checked in right on time. We only waited a few minutes in the lobby before we were taken to our car. It was a car with three rows, so we were the hitch hikers to a party of six. The other party was friendly and had the most adorable 15 month old, so we chatted with them throughout the meal.

To start off, I ordered the Oreo Milkshake and Mom chose the Coke blended with Cherry flavor.
DSCN1419.JPG

DSCN1420.JPG

The milkshake was good, but I had to let it melt a bit because at the beginning it was basically just a hunk of chocolate ice cream. Mom said her Cherry Coke wasn't very good and she thinks it may actually have been a Vanilla Coke.

We had decided on the entree ahead of time and went with The Reuben. It came with a side of fries. Our waitress brought us two baskets when the food came out.
DSCN1421.JPG

This was a very good reuben. I don't always like them, but this may have been one of the best I've ever had. And the fries were awesome as well. We enjoyed the atmosphere here; it really took Mom back to her childhood. However, our server was just okay, and I don't actually even remember her name. I would recommend Sci-Fi as long as you stick with simple food, but 50s Prime Time is still my go-to place at the Studios.

Pepper Market Dinner 2/10
Thursday evening we had dinner at the resort. The restaurant was pretty much empty and there was no wait to be seated. After our server explained how the market worked, we perused the menu before going up to order. Mom and I both ended up at the same station: Pizza and Pasta. Although I ordered several minutes before Mom, her food was ready first. I went with the Traditional Pepperoni Pizza and Mom chose the Pappardelle Pasta with Alfredo Sauce and Garlice Bread.
DSCN1426.JPG

DSCN1425.JPG

I had high hopes for my pizza, and while it wasn't bad by any means, it had also obviously come from the freezer. Mom's pasta wasn't anything special, but it was also good. She said her garlic bread hadn't been completely thawed as it was still cold in the middle. I took 1/4 of the pizza back to the room for lunch the next day, and we also took a bunch of Mom's pasta back which I ate for dinner last night.

After browsing the bakery, I decided I wanted the Cheesecake with Fruit and Chocolate Sauce and Mom chose a Fruit Tart.
DSCN1427.JPG

DSCN1430.JPG

Both of these were amazing but after trying some of each other's desserts, we each decided we liked our own better. Mom said the fruit tart was the best she's ever had on property.

Overall it was a decent meal and we would probably return.

Cafe Rix Breakfast 2/11
For breakfast this morning I chose a blueberry muffin.
DSCN1487.JPG

It was so delicious! Very moist and full of blueberries.

Yak & Yeti Dinner 2/11
Our ADR here was for 4:45, but we arrived around 4:15 and were seated within 5 minutes. Our server was Sherri, and while she was friendly enough, she didn't seem genuine. I can't exactly put my finger on it, and I don't know what she could have done differently, but I rated the service as "Very good" as opposed to "Outstanding" on the comment card.

To drink, I chose the Berry Cherry Limeade (Cherry and Lime Juice with Sprite) and Mom got the Glacier Water (Blue Curacao syrup with Sprite).
DSCN1565.JPG

This was one restaurant where we hadn't really decided ahead of time what we wanted because there were several things that sounded good! But we decided to go with the Tempura Shrimp. It came with a plum dipping sauce, rice, and stir-fried vegetables.
DSCN1566.JPG

There were 7 shrimp, and the dish was plenty for the both of us. Everything was delicious! I was hesitant about the veggies at first but they were awesome! :thumbsup2

For dessert, we were torn between the Mango Pie and the Fried Wontons...so we got both.
DSCN1567.JPG

DSCN1568.JPG

These were both...interesting. I like mango flavor, but the pie was too strong for me. For some reason, Mom thought it would be like a sorbet, so it wasn't what she was expecting either. The wontons were a little better. Although the cream cheese in them wasn't sweet, the strawberries, pineapple, sauce, and ice cream were, so it balanced out a little bit.

We really enjoyed Yak & Yeti, but it was definitely our most expensive meal at $48. I would definitely come back though, and I probably will because there are several other things I want to try!

Goofy's Candy Co. Snacks 2/11
Saturday night we headed to Downtown Disney for a few hours. We made our traditional stop at Goofy's, but instead of making our own things, we bought some items from the case. I chose a White Chocolate Raspberry Cookie and a Rice Crispy dipped in milk chocolate, covered in white and dark chocolate chips, and drizzled with milk chocolate. Mom chose a Triple Chocolate Brownie.
DSCN1583.JPG

DSCN1584.JPG

DSCN1581.JPG

I love those cookies so much, and the only place I can find them anymore is at Goofy's. They used to sell them pre-packaged as "Minnie's Bake Shop", but they don't anymore-lots of other flavors though. However, Mom told me that she found them at MCO airport, packaged under a different company. :confused3

The rice crispy was very good. Mom ate one of the ears and was disappointed only that it's hard to taste the rice crispy under all the toppings. I loved it though!

Mom said her brownie tasted a little peanut buttery, but she wasn't sure why.

Of course we'll definitely come back here. No trip to Downtown Disney is complete without a stop!

Yum! I love both the Pepper Market and Yak & Yeti! And, you had my favorite at Yak & Yeti- the tempura shrimp!

Pepper Market Breakfast 2/12
Sunday morning we decided to have breakfast at Pepper Market. Arriving around 10:30, the line was kind of long but it moved steadily and we were seated in about 15 minutes. The buffet had a variety of choices. Here is my first plate: Mickey waffle, bacon, blueberry muffin, croissant.
DSCN1585.JPG

The croissant was fluffy but a little cold, the muffin and waffle were delicious, and the bacon had good flavor but wasn't as crispy as I would have liked.

Mom's plate had eggs, waffles, fruit, some kind of pastry, breakfast potatoes, and bacon. She absolutely loved the eggs and pastry, but didn't care for the potatoes.
DSCN1586.JPG

And I went back for a second plate: Special K, Biscuit, Cinnamon Roll, and Fruit. Special K was good (obviously, it's cereal), the cinnamon roll was good, and the fruit was fine-I particularly liked the grapes, the honeydew was not very good. But I was extremely disappointed with the biscuit. It was very dense and just too much to chew, plus it was cold. I was very sad because I normally love biscuits.
DSCN1587.JPG

When we were brought the check and I gave my discount, I was a little upset to see that they had automatically added an 18% gratuity-that normally only happens at TS restaurants, and this is technically a CS. So that brought the total up a little bit. But breakfast was pretty good, especially considering that a)it's a CS credit on the dining plan and b)it's one of the cheapest breakfast buffets on property if you aren't on the dining plan.

Cafe Rix Lunch 2/12
Before Mom left we decided to grab some lunch from Cafe Rix. We weren't really hungry so decided to split a cheeseburger, which was fine because it was huge-this is half of it.
DSCN1588.JPG

It was excellent for a CS burger, and the accompanying chips were delicious as well. We took it into the adjoining Rix Lounge to eat it.

Overall, I found the food at Coronado to be pretty good, and the food on the trip as a whole was very good!

We are trying Yak & Yeti for the fist time in May and just like you, there are so many different things on the menu I want to try :goodvibes

The Pepper Market food looks really good; I've never been to this resort so it's great to hear all about it :thumbsup2

Thanks for posting the Pepper Market photos - we loved CSR and stayed there for years until Maya Grill discontinued the breakfast buffet - the way we like to start our day. The buffet at Pepper Market looks good for a counter service.

Great reviews! I am glad you enjoyed Yak & Yeti, that was a ton of shrimp and it looked delish!

I've been curious about Coronado Springs for a while now. The pictures you took of the resort look awesome & if I ever were to stay at a mod that would probably be the one I'd pick. I like that there's a breakfast buffet, and it seemed like it has most of the same choices as the other buffets with characters. Could you share what the full price would have been without your discount?

Since I'm not sure if you want the price of the buffet or the price of the room without the discount, I'll give you both. :thumbsup2

For the hotel (a preferred room during value season) the total without any sort of discount, including tax, would be $671.63.

The breakfast buffet is $14.99/person plus tax and tip.

Your reviews are still going great!

A little off-topic, but I just wanted to follow up about the selective enforcement of FP return times! About a week ago, Disney (quietly) announced that FP return times will be enforced starting March 7. Some have inferred this is due to NextGen's impending XPASS system, which will make use an online reservation system and possible be limited to Disney Resort or give certain benefits only to Disney resort guests. I've listed a couple sources below--a quick google search will turn up many more.

It's a bummer for those of us who like to get FPs in the morning and use them in the evening (and don't even get me started on XPASS :headache:) but I guess we'll just have to adjust our touring strategies.

I totally agree with your Mom about the cherry coke at Sci-Fi. I frequently order cherry cokes, but found the one at Sci-Fi to have a vanilla medicinal taste. My son actually ordered the vanilla coke and I got to taste the difference. We didn't like it either.

I'm sticking with the cherry cokes at 50's.:thumbsup2

Have been enjoying your reviews and blog. Hope your knee feels up to that long shift on Monday. We will be at Epcot for EMH on Friday. Hope to try Coral Reef for the first time.

We actually discussed this at our morning meeting on Sunday, and they basically said this will allow more FPs to be distributed throughout the day, which does make sense. Since they know people return after the window right now, they don't distribute as many as they could so the line remains short. It's acceptable for now, and I understand it-now that I have all the time in the world I don't really need a touring plan so won't really have anywhere else to be when my window is open. But I'm not excited for XPASS either and I hope they don't use it in the future.

Haven't had it at 50s-will mention that to mom for future visits!

My knee was a little sore after standing for so long, but it's fine today. Perhaps I'll see you on Friday!

Today I made a spur of the moment trip to Downtown Disney and decided on lunch at Wolfgang Puck Express. After perusing the menu I chose the Crispy Chicken Fingers with Fries and a Frozen Yogurt. The total with my discount was about $16.

To drink I filled my cup with the "Tropical Tea" and grabbed a table. I took a sip of tea and it was gross. It was not cold at all and had absolutely no flavor, let alone anything tropical. So I dumped it out and got rootbeer instead. I had one server bring me silverware and another deliver my entree.
DSCN1594.JPG

Neither of these servers ever came back to check on me or offer a refill. The fries were outstanding but the chicken was just okay. It was extremely hot and was kind of boring tasting-dipping it in ketchup helped a lot.

I sat there with an empty plate in front of me for quite some time before a bus boy finally came to take my dish. Then it took some more time for me to catch a server's attention to get my frozen yogurt and a rootbeer refill. I was offered a choice of vanilla, chocolate, or swirl and I went with swirl.
DSCN1595.JPG

This was very good and I would get it again. I kind of wanted a topping but didn't know what was available and it was already in the register as "no topping" and my total given before I could ask.

While the food was decent, the poor service detracted from the visit quite a lot.

As a side note, the screen on my camera is broken so I had to send it out for repair today. It's still under warranty but has to go up to New York, and I don't know when I'll get it back. I'll try not to eat anything Disney until then, but if I do, there will be reviews with no pictures.

Subscribing! I'll be in WDW at the end of March and I am loving all the snack and quick service reviews! I hope your camera gets fixed soon, but in the mean time I will wait patiently... :goodvibes

ETA: We, too, are staying at Coronado Springs. Thanks for all of the great pics on your blog!
