There's an announcement out from Port Canaveral that they will be the host for three additional cruise ships to Port Canaveral within the next few months, and one replacement ship.

Holland America will have their Zaandam starting November of 2002.

Norwegian Cruise lines will have their brand new ship, Norwegian Dawn, starting May 18, 2003. Port Canaveral will be both a Port of Call and an Embarkation Point with itineraries linking with New York City.

Royal Olympic Cruises will have their Olympia Explorer starting November 2002.

Carnival will have it's brand new Carnival Glory ship based at Port Canaveral starting in July of 2003.

Here's a link to the Web page with more info:

Al, last time I was at the port, it looked like they were building a new slip between the Disney terminal and the Carnival terminal. It that true? How's it coming along? I can only imagine this is how they'd have enough room for all these new ships.

I looked and noticed that most of these new ships will be doing Saturday-Saturday which should make for a more crowded port. I'm thinking that planes coming and going to Orlando will be fuller and more expensive then now because of the old supply and demand theory. Also, the limo's will probably need to be making ressie's earlier for, again for the above reason. It is currently nice and easy to get to and from but I question the traffic to the port and I would also guess getting ressie's at the Radission will also become harder to get and more expensive.

I know I sound like gloom and doom but I have dealt with the Ft Lauderdale airport for plane ressie's and it can be hard to get good one's when alot of ship's are coming and going.

Hi dave,
the only thing I can say at this moment A BIG MESS, BUT when it is over, it is going to look awesome - The Glory is suppose to take the place of the Pride - from my understand she is being sent to Miami - the others will be there when the others aren't - they will not be any in disney's spot - I don't know just how for sure all 4 are, but I know 2 of them are.
Will keep you posted.
Always

Dave,

No one has taken over the Little Red Boat's spot,

If they expand that slip a ship can go in there.

DCL could rent out their terminal (just kidding)
they only use it on Sat, Sun and Thursday

Carnival is there Sat, Sun and Thursday

RCCL is only there on Sun and Thur

there are lots of options

Dave -

I regret that I haven't been able to get to the Port since my last cruise in January, but I know I'll be there in October for my bonus cruise, to redeem those $99 vouchers. :teeth: I'm sure I can turn it into a cruise that'll cost several multiples of the $99 start price. I'll be able to tell you more about the progress then.

I found a map on the Port Canaveral website that shows their 20 year plan for expansion and progress. It actually shows two new cruise terminals between the Disney and the Carnival existing terminals, although it appears to be the same size as the DCL. They're labeled as Cruise Terminal 6 and 7, but look the same size as all the other ones, whether they have two numbers or one.

There's an additional new terminal shown across from the one for Carnival, labeled Cruise Terminal 12, and it also shows that they intend to widen the turning basin there.

Here's a link to the graphic showing the plans:

And here's a link to a webpage that discusses the plans in general, including the strong possibility that Port Canaveral could be involved in actually building new Mega Cruise Ships, as part of the project for the World City Corportation, with the first ship for the Westin Corporation. These ships would actually sail under the U.S. Flag, very interesting.

Thanks for finding that map, DisneySlave. I know that as the port is currently configured, 3 major cruise ships can be in port at the same time (and are on Sundays and Thursdays). I see from the map and from Shirley's comments that they are indeed building a new terminal where it appeared they were. That would increase the capacity to 4. And there's another slip on the planning board for across from Carnival's slip. That would take it to 5.

Tony, where did the Little Red Boat dock?

I agree, susan514... this will definitely increase traffic in the area. When we sailed last year, the Pride hadn't launched Saturday-Saturday cruises yet... the Magic was the only major ship sailing that day.

Well... good for the Space Coast!

Thanks Al for that tidbit of information about the Dawn embarking in NY and Port Canaveral. Maybe we can have that family reunion after all with all our Orlando and New York family. BUT...When I just mentioned the ports to DH he wasn't too happy with the ports. Maybe the ship and entertainment on board will get him to change his mind. Will have to check these out.

I remember from our first cruise that the Little Red Boat(and boy was it small compared to the Magic) tied up someplace near Sterling, on the straight part of the channel.

Dave,

according to the map there is no pier there.

They must of sailed on Friday and Monday when the Magic did the 3/4 day and used the slip where Carnival is now.

I found an old article on the Big Red Boat and it mentioned that it used Cruise Terminal 4 at Port Canaveral. From the map for the 20 year plan, it shows Sterling Casino at Cruise Terminal 2, then terminal 3 and terminal 4 is the last one on the channel. It's actually shown even with Jetty Park.

I can still remember seeing the Big Red Boats tied up in the Port of Nassau right after Premiere Cruise Line was bankrupt and the ships were siezed by the creditors. The ships looked very small compared to the Disney Wonder and the paint was very faded.

In another article, it said that the Big Red Boat I (the SS Oceanic) had been christened by Minnie Mouse. I'm guessing that was done after it was refurbished. It was built in 1965 and refurbished in 1986 and 1993. It was 782 feet long and displaced less than 39,000 tons with 590 Staterooms, quite a bit smaller than the DCL ships.

And they did sail on Monday and Friday, which seems peculiar now, since we're used to the schedule for the Wonder.
