Get a load of how thick and heavy that door is from the eBay description of that other safe!!! I was right about the possibility of it dropping - er, no CRASHING on a foot. :scared1: :headache:

OP & BIL, please be careful! :hyper:

This is so cool!

I can't believe you lived there for 4 years and never noticed it before (and your husband forgot)! I thought it was bad when I found a "secret" drawer I never knew about in my kitchen after living there for 2 years. Unfortunately, my secret drawer was empty, but I do keep my wax paper, saran wrap, and aluminum foil in there now.

I can't wait for the update.

back in 2000 we rented an old country store (that had been shut down for years) and restored it then opened it back up. Inside the original Post Office (which we used as an office) was a similar to the OP safe. We asked the owner of the building (his grandparents had built the building) and he said no one new the combo but he was pretty sure there wasn't anything important in it. It was huge and heavy so we just left it there.
Fast fwd a few months and we were robbed. The gunman took our 2 partners into the office and demanded the safe be opened. They were hysterical and kept insisting that we didn't know the code and there was nothing in it. It got pretty ugly, but thankfully he gave up on the safe. It was big news story in this small town. 2 days later (the partners left the business that night so we were stuck with it) a local locksmith stopped by and started chatting about the safe and the problems it caused during the robbery. He explained to dh how to get it open (he could use is regular drill but needed a special bit) then said well if you get permission from the owners of the building, I will do it for you. Of course the owners were happy to allow it, since the stupid safe almost cost 2 people their lives. The locksmith was able to drill a hole (similar to the one op described) and get it opened after about 30 mins. I think he broke 2 drill bits.
The owner stopped by later (he didn't mind us opening it without him there) and was happy to have the old papers in there. nothing valuable - just paperwork from when his grandparents owned the store etc. OHHH the funniest part? there was a piece of paper with the safe combo IN THE SAFE! very practical!

Good luck to the OP I can't wait to hear whats in there! :surfweb:

I could tell by the number of posts since you signed on. You are obviously saving your milky rollover posts...

:thumbsup2

Yup, I'm very stingy with my posts... (And here my DH is saying I'm a DIS chatterbox... I'll have to show him that it's all relative.)

Hmmm, :scratchin

If you look at the inside of the door jamb from the OTHER safe posted in an ebay auction, there are THREE holes for the lock bolts to slide into. Also, the rim of the door is a good 2-3" wider, with receding ridges to catch any type of slim jim from being able to be slid in to depress the bolts. :magnify

I don't think this is going to be opened today without a professional safe cracker who can fiddle with the combination and/or drill to get that knob to turn to slide the door bolts. :(

LOL......

I sub'ed to this the other day and my internet has been out ever since. I wa hoping to come here and find out what is in the safe

I had to take my son to a b-day party today and figured we would know by now what was in the safe, but nope, almost 2:30 and still nothing.

OP - please don't leave us hangin'. At least give us an update, even if it's only to say that you've had no luck opening the safe yet.

I hate cliff hangers.

I agree. The last time I participated in a "cliff hanger" thread I never did find out what was in the spoon (and the tag fairy has never let me forget it.)
