Found Money

Found $60 at EPCOT in 2012. Picked it up & then we stood around looking to see if anyone was searching around or checking their wallet. After a couple minutes, we decided it was "ours" :)

About 5 years ago, my Mom left $14 cash in a plastic bag in one of the changing rooms at Typhoon Lagoon. She almost immediately realized it and turned around and went back for it but it was already gone. Later that same week we were in EPCOT and she found $$ just laying on the path in front of the Mexico pavilion. She picked it up and stood off to the side for a few minutes watching the crowd. She was looking for someone who acted as if they had lost something. After a while she counted the money and there was exactly $14. Karma.

Last year she picked up a gift card in the parking lot at Target. It was from a clothing store in the mall, not Target. She assumed it was used, but called the number on the back of it and checked after she got home. It was loaded with $50. She called Target, explained what had happened, but did not tell them the name of the store the card was for. She figured if someone asked at Target and could name the store, she would bring it in. After 30 days she checked back and there was no record at Target of any inquires about a lost gift card. So she gave the card to my niece at college. She was thrilled!

Not the same as finding cash but this story is in this morning's paper. If you find misplaced bank money in your account they consider it stealing and will come after you. Doesn't quite seem right.

Oh, no. That is a total felony. If someone comes to my house and accidentally drops a bank bag with $5,000 in it on my doorstep, it is not my money. I have to turn it in. The same with your bank. If you are paying bills and realize the bank has made an error and increased your balance by a few thousand bucks, that is real money. It belongs to someone. The idea that it is somehow yours to keep is crazy. Just because the bank made an error doesn't mean you get to keep money that isn't yours. This dude is a crook.

Agreed. Back when I was in college, somehow I ended up having the money for my student loan deposited into my bank account twice. I had a boyfriend at the time who was trying to convince me to go draw them money out. I thought he must be crazy. Of course they're going to figure it out eventually. I called them right away and they took the duplicate deposit back. I felt scared just knowing it was sitting there in my account.
