FOTL & tickets?

Please forgive a noobie question -
In order to get FOTL access, do you have to buy your tickets as part of a package with the hotel, or is it OK if you just book the hotel and buy the tickets elsewhere (say, Undercover Tourist)?

All you need is a room reservation to get the Unlimited Express Pass for onsite guest. It doesn't matter if you have an AP, tickets from Universal or another company, or get them through a package.
