Forum Etiquette: Sad emoji response

I always understood the other emoji answers besides the „thumbs up“ to be about my reaction to the content of the post not a rating of the post.

So laughing: haha, that’s a funny story, you made me laugh. Not: Haha, you are so stupid that you post something so silly.

The whole spirit of the DISboards is that way. We aren’t mean to each other. So sad means: I am sorry, your story makes me sad. Not: this is a bad post that makes me sad that I spent time reading it.

As I said, the thumbs up (like) I think means both: thank you for posting this as it is helpful, informative, enjoyable etc. But it can also mean: this is a good post, I agree with this.

I think it's contextual. It can be either one depending on what the post is about
I agree here! Could mean either depending on what the original post was.

If some said “Elsa is my favorite princess!” And you sad emoji means you disagree

If someone says “I had to cancel my cruise!” And you sad face you’re being empathetic to their sad story

I read Cruise Critic if I need info about a cruise on a different cruise line. They ARE mean to each other - in actual words, not cute emojis. The snark level is often high there. (Not everyone, of course.).
I would have to agree about CC. Also, don't call it a "boat". I also got turned off of CC by their horrible forum software. To the point that I rarely visit, even when I am planning a cruise.

So true! I was just told I was being dramatic b/c I didn't understand why everyone wanted to carry a bunch of cash around. Apparently you don't get slips to add gratuity on NCL, but instead of just being nice and telling me that, I was told I was being dramatic. I don't carry cash in my daily life, and why would I carry cash on DCL when I can just add it to my room charge via the slip? oh well, that's CC for you!

I think most of us use emojis the same way you do. However, I do know that Gen Z's have much more regimented use of emojis and will interpret their use accordingly, so I don't think it's a weird question to ask at all. I don't think there are likely to be many Gen Z's on disboards though, and as a mom of teens, I will also add that they don't necessarily expect us older folks to follow their emoji etiquette.

If I click the sad emoji response, does that mean I don’t like the post (like a thumbs down to a bad post) - or that I agree with the writer in that the story is sad?

Thanks, everyone. All my sad emojis are for the latter.
